What Makes Your Home Feel Like Fall?

What makes your home feel like fall?

Is it something you do? Is it something that’s said? Is it that first bite of apple crumble or your first sip of cider? Is it the pumpkin on your front porch?

Today’s question is brought to you by my own curiosity and excitement for the very best time of year! For me, it’s pulling out our heaviest blankets and draping them over the arm of a chair. It’s purchasing a spiced candle from the summer craft fair, and knowing that I can finally light it without guilt. It’s a thick cable knit sweater. It’s a sprinkle of cinnamon in my coffee cup, it’s warming my hands around the mug.

Over the weekend, I heated coconut oil in a skillet and tossed in handfuls of chopped apple chunks. As they simmered, I added a dash of cinnamon, a touch of nutmeg. Lucy watched as I dictated my every move – I’m slicing the apples, I’m using my spatula to coat them in yummies – and she excitedly rubbed her chest and yelled, please! please! please!, as I moved the softened apples off the burner to cool.

This. This is fall!

And as our days get shorter and the evenings come earlier, we’re switching on the lamps sooner, too. The warm light, the washed-velvet pillows and earmarked pages of a well-loved, hand-me-down book – this is fall.

I made a few tweaks to our living room, small things – a layered pillow here, a mini pumpkin there. Upstairs, I’m debating swapping our white linen bedding to a heavier quilt. Lucy snuggles into the crib with her stuffed lamb and a blanket. We’re keeping our windows open to let the cool air in as long as the weather will allow us. This is some good sleeping weather, Scott always says, as we’re closing our eyes for the night.

Great post!! Here’s a (first world problem) dilemma- our home decor scheme leans cooler… lots of blues, indigo dyes, greys, and some pinks- especially our giant living room rug. I’m kinda at a loss as to how to bring fall tones into our “beach shack” styled home without it looking silly ReplyCancel

Try using faux fur throws in cream or gray, and think more about textures, as opposed to colors!ReplyCancel

Could you switch out the pinks for orange/rust tones? I think those would work beautifully with the rest of your palette!ReplyCancel

Changing out the lightweight chenille bed cover for the heavier quilt (why do I sleep so much better under its weight), watching the beautiful mums bloom in my flower bed, and updating the front porch decor with the little scarecrow and pumpkin. Ahhh I love fall! ReplyCancel

It’s the best!! Have you tried a weighted blanket? I’ve been so curious…ReplyCancel

I haven’t made that plunge yet, but I keep looking.ReplyCancel

I just (finally) purchased a weighted blanket and I do like it but not sure yet if I love it.  Also, my favorite fall candle is from the “Our Own Candle Company” and it called Smell My Nuts, because not only does it smell amazing…it makes me giggle.ReplyCancel
