Vlog: Yard Sale Day (7 Years Strong!)

Ah, summer. The freshly cut grass, the warm air, the every other day street festival… the yard sales!

Scott spearheaded our first building-wide, multi family yard sale (yup, back in our original yellow brick home!) in 2009, and we’ve carried the tradition over to our new – and by new, you know we’ve been here for 3 years this summer! – block. Only once was it skipped completely, and that was in 2013 when we were tearing down drywall and hoisting ceilings. This year, we had a ten-family-affair, and that same night, we took a portion of our prize money and purchased an almost new grill off of Craigslist. Yeah, summer!

Today, we’re taking you along on our 7th annual yard sale, and we’ll share what we do to prepare and how we hang during the morning rush. Plus, of course, we hang with dogs. (Lots and lots of dogs.) Cheers to the holiday weekend, and here’s hoping you’ll catch a few sales while you’re out and about!

VIDEO NOTES

An in-depth look at 3 months(!) of planning a yard sale.
• The ‘Puppies Make Me Happy’ tank was a gift from our neighbor, Liz! (Am I that obvious? Ha!)
Nelson needs a home! See adoptable Nelson and friends through Chicago Canine Rescue.
• Our dining table and kitchen items can all be found right here, and for those interested, the countertops are white macauba quartzite, a suggestion by several of you. We love them.

At 6′ wide(!), it was just too large for our living room! That was a tough one to let go though.ReplyCancel

Will you be having a 2017 yard sale? Did I miss it already :( ?ReplyCancel

Sadly, the garden unit sucked up ALL of our energy for the summer. We were hoping someone else might have been able to take the reigns, but you know how summers go… I’m sort of still hoping for one in the fall though!ReplyCancel

It is possible that I screamed when I saw the coffee table you were selling. “AAAIGH, WHYYYYYY DO YOU LIVE IN CHICAGO!?” My family gave me odd looks.ReplyCancel

I was there for the acquisition of that ottoman and now see it cast aside. Not sure if I should read into that or not.ReplyCancel

It didn’t sell! Let’s talk, Uncle Brain. It would look perfect in your home. I think Chuckleberry Hound might even like it.ReplyCancel

Great vlog! Makes me wish I could get my act together to organize a neighborhood yard sale! Too bad it was so hot instead of the insanely nice/cool weather Chicago had this past weekend ;) but it didn’t look like it slowed down your sales any! Congrats on another successful yard sale!ReplyCancel

SO hot that weekend! We almost hit 100!ReplyCancel

So great! I am always stuck on how to price things at a yard sale. I’m curious how you guys decide on pricing? How much did the coffee table or awesome chairs (the ones you’re sitting on during the intro) sell for?ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.8.16 - 4:03 PM

Pricing can definitely be tricky! You saw in the video that we have a box full of “FREE” items, but the coffee table sold for $80 and those gold chairs sold as a pair for $25 – both items were a profit from when we first got them second hand though! The majority of our items are under $10, but some things we do a little research on and come up with something fair based on what we might find on eBay or Craigslist. We want things to GO, so in the second half of the day, we’ll definitely make crazy deals for people who might be on the fence!ReplyCancel
