This is a good and simple list! My main issue with gift lists is stopping myself from adding them to my own cart…
I have the same problem, haha.
Soapbox: Can I make a plea for everyone to reconsider Palo Santo sticks? The trees are facing extinction in their native forests in countries that don’t have the means to enforce sustainable harvesting practice.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment! You’ve given us something to read up on for sure.
Although there is a species of Palo Santo tree that is endangered, Bulnesia Sarmientoi, the species used for the vast majority of Palo Santo sticks (including the one pictured here), Bursera Graveolens, is not. In fact, the harvest of Palo Santo for retailing purposes, especially since most good Palo Santo comes from wood that has fallen from an adult (4+ year old) tree naturally (I.e. the trees are not cut down for this purpose), has encouraged the protection of these trees as well as given jobs to those who desperately need them. These projects have been recognized by the U.N. and are serving to protect the forests where Bursera Graveolens grow. The easiest way to tell what type of Pale Santo tree your purchase comes from is just to look at it. The endangered tree’s wood is a dark, mahogany-like wood, while the other is a yellowish wood resembling pine. There’s so much misinformation out there on this subject, and the renewed interest in Palo Santo has actually done great things for the people and trees of Ecuador. Here’s a really good breakdown of the pertinent info: https://sacredwoodessence.com/is-palo-santo-endangered/
No worries Kim & Scott! And great gift guide, I love that Carhartt bag and Yeti mug combo!
This is incredible. Thank you so much for this information! Love you guys for being so thoughtful with your feedback.
To add I have seen requests from Native people asking for others not to use their sacred practices as their own, as well as taking their resources for this. Just adding more perspectives to the discussion.
