Today Is Yours (and 3 Things)

today-is-yours

ONE. The above print is a reproduction of one of my all-time favorite works of art in the city; I’ve snapped countless photos of it on my phone, and you might remember it from this post, too. You can see it as an enormous installation at the train station (the California blue line stop in Logan Square), hand painted by local artist Ryan Duggan. When I saw that Ryan was selling them as stunning limited edition prints at a craft fair, I couldn’t give him my money fast enough (while profusely thanking him for bringing a smile to my face with every trip on the train!). I had every intention of hanging it in the studio, but after framing it this past weekend, Scott suggested the perfect spot for it – right there, by the front door. He was absolutely right (just don’t tell him I said so!).

TWO. I’m totally on board the podcast train (admittedly late to the game), and this week, I was asked to be a guest on The Lively Show, to which I said, yes! (Followed with a please forgive me for being nervous!) The host, Jess Lively, is a very good friend of mine, and we had so much fun talking about painting, photography, hoarding rescue pets and how it all began. She is an excellent interviewer, and since we are, actually, friends in real life, it felt comfortable and natural – just as if we were chatting over a weekend dinner date. Tune in right here!

THREE. Recently, I’ve been working behind the scenes with Pinhole Press as an all-things-home contributor for their freshly revamped blog! It’s been so much fun collaborating with the team behind the high quality line of photo prints, gifts and books (there are so many DIY possibilities with them!), and with their blog’s new look, they’ve been rolling out posts from an amazing crew of fellow bloggers (pinch me; I’m in great company!). My first post hit today, and you can catch up with all the guest members on their blog.

As if three completely random thoughts weren’t enough (hey, that’s life!), here’s a few more:

  • After seeing this post from Thrift Decor Chick, Scott and I are rethinking our door trim, but we cannot wait to get going on the entryway – next, we think.
  • Choco Chunk gives Jack a tongue bath.
  • We’re thisclose to finishing the workroom, and we’d love to add a tall, hearty plant to the room (not a fiddle leaf, as I know I’d kill it!). This house is begging for some greenery with all the natural daylight, but you know we don’t have the greenest thumbs. Does anyone have any pet friendly, easy-to-maintain suggestions?

Also, have a happy weekend! Has spring weather reached you yet?

that sign is such a great reminder and i agree the perfect spot is right at the front door…

you might want to consider an ivy. they’re non-toxic and not too much maintenance. there are some non-toxic ferns you can also consider, but tend they to prefer a humid environment. i’ve always been hit or miss with them. another plant is the spider plant. hope this helps! :)ReplyCancel

Love the sign – so true, what a great reminder :-)

I love Jade plants. They are practically one of the only things that I cannot kill that just grows and grows!!

    Happy, happy Friday :-)ReplyCancel

Try a spider plant! They are really hardy (my mom has had the same one for 20+ years) and she gave me a baby off of it and its doing great!ReplyCancel

Vet student here… just a little PSA to double-check the toxicity of any plant you bring into your pet-friendly home! The ASPCA is probably the best resource for this:

    http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

Of course not all cats and dogs enjoy nibbling on plants (mine certainly do) but it’s always better to be safe than sorry (and having to pay a couple thousand dollar bill for an extended ICU stay…) :)ReplyCancel

Shoot, I was hoping the mother in law tongue didn’t fall under the danger zone, and it’s listed. Thank you for this link! We’ll be taking a peek at it while plant shopping (for any plants within Maddie’s reach).ReplyCancel

Your new art print reminds me of the poster in my entryway, “Work hard and be nice to people”, by Anthony Burrill – which I bought thanks to you and didn’t tell you yet.
Congrats for your first post on Pinhole Press, you’re a pro now. And thank you for making me smile thanks to Jack and CC’s video. Have a nice week-end.ReplyCancel

I love that you love it! It’s definitely one of my favorite prints in the home, now followed closely with this. They are such great reminders every single day.ReplyCancel

Jenny over at LGN just did some killer chunky trim, too – you should check it out if you haven’t seen it yet: http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2014/03/diy-extra-tall-baseboards.html

Can’t wait to see what you guys do! That entryway makes me so jealous ;)ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.28.14 - 9:01 AM

Oh I LOVE that! Thank you! I noticed that her door casing is the same that we’ll be using. Such a great idea for a chunkier base.ReplyCancel

ahhhh as a fellow california stop-er, i LOVE that you got that print!!!ReplyCancel

I saw this diy plant stand a while ago which might be perfect for your space. And I’ve had great luck with not killing snake plants (aka mother-in-law tongues). I’m not sure if they are toxic to pets, but my dirt loving dog doesn’t bother mine as long as it’s on the plant stand. I got my 3 foot tall snake plant at home depot and I love it. Can’t wait to see what you pick.

  • I don’t have a super green thumb either. I’m interested what suggestions come your way for a larger plant.

I’ve had luck enlisting the help of a local florist/plant lover/friend who potted a bunch of drought resistant plants for me. Nearly 2 years later, most of them are alive… but I have not idea what kind they are except I definitely requested a jade plant.

Anyways, if you end up with multiple plants instead of a big one, you should check out Ikea’s plant stand in their new 2014 collection to give them some height. http://design-milk.com/ikea-ps-2014-move-collection/ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.28.14 - 10:34 AM

I’m loving that new collection! I think the hardest part of the perfect plant is something cat friendly. Miss Maddie loves her some greenery… (Or I’ll just have to put it out of reach…)ReplyCancel

Rubber trees are pretty hard to kill, from what I hear.ReplyCancel

  • Marie3.28.14 - 10:56 AM

My toxic plants lists are unfortunately in french, but that was something important when I decided to have plants because my cat loved them. Do you use catmint ? It really helps keep your plants and yours pets healthy. You can use it indoor, with a nice flower-pot holder. I would recommend to buy some seeds, it’s cheaper. And you have to plant some regularly because it does not last long but it’s easy and quick to do.ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.28.14 - 10:57 AM

Oh, I haven’t heard of catmint. I’ll have to look into it – thank you, Marie!ReplyCancel

  • Crystal3.28.14 - 11:18 AM

My suggestion would be a spider plant. Rather than growing up, they grow down, so you would start with a high location or a hanging planter. Plus, non toxic to dogs and cats, and unique and fun looking.ReplyCancel

I just bought a great houseplant called a Money tree (Pachira aquatica) at Ikea (as i tend to kill things also, so didn’t want to spend too much moula). It’s a tree (so similar shape to the fiddle leaf fig), but loves water- so you can’t really kill it! You’ll have to check about if it’s ok with pets, my dog could care less about plants.ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.28.14 - 12:41 PM

Scott pointed those out last time we were there! I did like the shape a lot. Thank you!ReplyCancel

      • Lyndsey3.28.14 - 5:58 PM

oh, and it’s growing like crazy and i read online that you can’t overwater it. I was SOLD!ReplyCancel

  • Jodi3.28.14 - 12:27 PM

    i love this SO MUCH.ReplyCancel

  • Jill3.28.14 - 12:52 PM

OH MY GOODNESS I just watched that video! hahahaha, Jack is like “Um, this is kinda weird. Do I like it?! Ummm, okaaaaaay.” So funny!ReplyCancel

  • Marie3.28.14 - 1:12 PM

I’m not sure about catmint translation, I also saw “catnip” written. Anyway, it looks like grass when it grows and helps your cats with fur balls. In France, you can find it in local stores, pet shops or garden centers.ReplyCancel

    Hi Kim,
I just ordered “Today is Yours” what size frame is it in. I want to order a frame from Framebridge.com but have not received the print yet but would like to order the frame so I am ready to frame the print when it arrives. Also did you add a mat? LOVE YOUR Style and your pups I have 5 standard poodles.ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.24.17 - 11:16 AM

We just used an IKEA frame – maybe it was 12″x18″ish? But if you’re going with framebridge (which I would definitely recommend, because they do amazing work!), you’ll order the frame type online, put in the art dimensions, and then you’ll mail the print to them. They’ll handle the exact frame size and mat! Super easy!! Ours isn’t matted, but if we were to go through framebridge, I’d add a mat since it’s such a colorful print.

And thank you for the kind words! 5 poodles – wowza!ReplyCancel
