The Weekender: Setting Boundaries + a Bright Summer Cocktail

stools | brass light | pendant light (similar)

It’s Been… a Month.

Um, where did June go? We’ve been light on the blog, but behind the scenes, we’ve been pushing ourselves too hard, and that stops… now. Lucy has spent the last few weeks with her grandparents while we worked on getting the condo prepped for sale (among many other things), a rare treat for them (and us), but good gravy WE HAVE MISSED HER. Funny how such a tiny human can bring so much balance to our lives, but we’re counting down the minutes until we can squeeze her – tomorrow!

With Lucy being away, it’s also (not so) funny how easily we fell back into ‘old Kim + Scott’ – the Kim + Scott that worked 12+ hour work days, 7 days a week. That old routine has weighed heavy on my heart and mental health, to the point where any and every obstacle has felt like another hill to climb. And so, we’ve promised each other that moving forward, the ‘new Kim + Scott’ are setting better boundaries. Life is too short, stop and smell the roses, all those good things. I’m not a person who is afraid to say no, I’m not a people-pleaser, exactly. But I am a person who wants everyone around me to feel loved and cared for. My biggest struggle right now is taking care of myself.

To those of you that know the secret to setting boundaries, how do you do it?! Really, I’m listening.

I’m looking towards July with more optimism, more rose-smelling, more long walks with Kitty and more Lucy(!).

What Else?

I watched this (at least) 5 times, and my heart was soaring.

Justina Blakeney’s line with Opalhouse launched at Target, and no surprise, it’s rich with color + quirk. I’ll always gravitate towards golds, blush and cream, but if you’re a more adventurous person than I, she has you covered! These are my picks from the collection:

If a unicorn was a bathroom!

Lazy Haven

Did you follow along with the One Room Challenge? I especially love going through the guest participants, and I noticed a lot of tone-on-tone (I’m drooling), vintage charm (this music room!) and panel molding (that fuschia tho!). The campground (above) made my jaw drop, and this short term rental (below) blew me away!

Benson Dwelling

These jeans, all summer long! I purchased them in two washes, and they haven’t left my body since. Tip: Size down.

Bright Summer Cocktail

Sip (kiddie) poolside + enjoy!

I’ve been influenced! I first saw Elise @thefoxfamilyden share these molds in her Stories, and I knew Lucy would LOVE them. The shapes, the tails, the hidden fossils(!) – I cannot recommend these enough.

Something else I want to shout from the rooftops? THIS CLEANSER. I’ve been using it for a month and have noticed a world of difference! My skin feels the same as it does after a detoxifying mask. Smooth, clean, never tight or dry. All the gold stars.

I couldn’t resist one of these for me, one for little Goose. We are so ready for the weekend!

Big Weekend Sales

Have a Happy Weekend

Do you have fun plans for your 4th of July weekend? We’ll be decompressing at our Tree House in Michigan – our first time there for the 4th! We plan to make s’mores, hit the beach, and allow Lucy to stay up way too late. Time stops in Michigan (in the best way), and I’ll be doing everything in my power to soak in every moment, savor every second.

Does the glossier cleanser remove makeup, too? Or do you use something different for that and then cleanse? My holy grail makeup remover/cleanser was discontinued recently ???? and I feel like I’ve tried EVERYTHING since then, but I just can’t find anything that even comes close to how much I loved that product!
That scalloped quilt is GORGEOUS, and I’ve been wanting something gold to add to my bedding layers! Such a good price!
I’m going to a BBQ tomorrow that I’m making strawberry shortcakes for, then I’m just spending the weekend lounging and playing with the pup. I hope you have a gorgeous weekend in Michigan!ReplyCancel

I usually remove my eye makeup first, but out of sheer laziness I washed my face with the cleanser without removing anything AND IT ALL CAME OFF. All of it. Every last trace. It’s so so so so good.ReplyCancel

For self care, Glennon Doyle and her sister Amanda share so much real life wisdom on hard things on their podcast: we can do hard things. The latest episode was on self care. I hope you enjoy it! So worth a listen.ReplyCancel

Setting boundaries for quality of life: I’m a small business owner, my family owns two print shops.  We are open M-F during regular business hours.  Very rarely does my work extend beyond that, maybe with some phone calls/texts after hours, and meetings every few weeks – but nothing crazy (I don’t even see work emails outside of my shop).  Thus the “work” part of my life has very defined / contained hours, and no weekends (my dad picked the jackpot of industries to get into back in the early 1980s).
Could you set “regular working hours”?  However, if you reduce your 12-hour work days to 8-hour work days, your projects will run longer.  But this is where the give-and-take of maintaining a balanced life comes into play.  And maybe it’s worth it?ReplyCancel

I think it’s worth it to scale back, and things just take longer. That’s the conversation Scott and I are having right now as we learn to scale, say ‘no’ more often, and be okay with not being connected at all times. It’s like we need to re-train our brains, but we’re working on it. Thank you, Karen!ReplyCancel

  • Michelle7.2.21 - 9:00 AM

Kim and Scott, I’m pretty sure you push yourselves to the 12+ hour work days 7 days a week because you enjoy it so much! And also with the greatest kindness I may add this – maybe you set expectations to finish a project sooner than what can be done in an 8 hour day so it forces the extra time. I’m a traditional salaried job, but I know when I’m committing to a project deadline that will take 12 hour days (usually someone else has set this deadline) and when I get to set a deadline around 8 hour/day expectations. After those 12 hour/day projects are done, burnout is real and it’s when I take those extra hours I put in and translate them back into time for myself, aka DAYS OFF and I don’t mean the weekend. I earned them, you’ve earned them, so take some time off and relax, bike ride, go out to eat, go to the park… Happy 4th! (and then some!!)ReplyCancel

Hi Michelle! You’re right – we enjoy the work, so we keep going, going, going, and then… BURN OUT. I used to be much better about knowing when to stop, but sometimes I get carried away, and then it feels like a pile of bricks. Learning to feel okay taking time off has ALWAYS been a struggle for me, but I know that squeezing my Lucy girl tomorrow will be a big step in the right direction. :) Happy 4th!ReplyCancel

I think the child factor plays heavily into this, at least for me. When your kid is being watched (at school, with friends, with grandparents), you know you have finite time to get work done before they return. It’s not like the pre-kid days where you can rest when you need to and then pick right back up again when you’re ready. This leads me, too, to cram ASMUCHASPOSSIBLE into those quiet kid-free times…. but it also leads to pushing beyond what I realistically should be doing. I do not have a good solution, just that I get it, and be kind to yourselves, you’re doing great. <3ReplyCancel

Glad to see a Weekender again, I’m a fan of reading your blog posts. Please squeeze that Lucy girl and let the time slow down. I know you guys have been busy making magic happen at the condo and I know you’ll have great success with that sale. Have a great long weekend and thanks for all the ORC references, there are so many good ones!ReplyCancel

The book Set Boundaries, Find Peace by Nedra Glover Tawweb was a life changer for me. I cannot recommend it enough for someone who struggles with wanting to make sure everyone around them is happy at the expense of their own mental health.ReplyCancel

It helps me to make rules for myself when  I’m able to sit down and think them out logically, and then not allow myself to think about it or change them when I’m making decisions emotionally, in the moment :) Sometimes, too much thinking can be my downfall!ReplyCancel

  • Susan7.2.21 - 6:14 PM

When my 3 were Lucy’s age, I raced around doing all things for all people and never felt it was enough. Then, I had a breakdown at age 36. Not saying we have to push ourselves to a breakdown to learn to set boundaries but sometimes our bodies will force our hand. I now own a business and I’m strict about it only being M-F, and not taking work calls on the weekends. I will text, but I decide when and if I respond. That was a hard won lesson but it works. Recently I took a day off in the middle of the week and gave myself permission to do nothing but sit by my fountain. It was so worth it. It’s a decision you need to make. You will find your wayReplyCancel

Thank you, Susan. Scott and I daydream about doing nothing for a whole day with no guilt. We’re working on it.????ReplyCancel

  • Kristin7.2.21 - 6:34 PM

Will you be doing a post with all of the updates you made in the condo? (Sorry if I missed it!) trying to get a house ready to sell and whew – don’t know where to start! Hope you have the BEST weekend!!ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.3.21 - 8:32 AM

We will! We have a few posts lined up for the kitchen, and a big Q+A with our realtor.ReplyCancel

I can relate so much to needing to set better boundaries. I recently had a conversation with my therapist about it and she made me feel more empowered to focus on self-care more. It can be easier said than done thou and I totally get it! ReplyCancel
