The Weekender: Photo Outtakes, A Pile of Denim, Taking Control (Or Not) and a New Way to Shop Our Favorites!

A .gif of holiday photo outtakes taken from the 606 Trail in Chicago, Illinois | via Yellow Brick Home

Were We Doomed from the Beginning?

I clipped an extra bobby pin in my hair, wrapped a scarf around Jack’s neck, slipped on Lucy’s cutest shoes. We dressed comfortably, but I dabbed on extra blush. We threw my camera, a tripod and multiple snack options in the stroller, leashed up the dogs, and began walking along The 606 Trail, stopping near the bridge overlooking Milwaukee Avenue. We were the family with the best intentions, setting up a tripod with a self-timer in a public space, with two dogs and a toddler… to take our holiday family photo.

Have you done this, too? I assured Scott it would be a breeze – 15 minutes, tops!, I promised – which, looking back, is laughable! Lucy was insatiable (despite having two snacks before we left the house), the dogs were on alert for any fallen crumb, and despite the cool temperatures, I started getting overheated. Ha! HAHAHA.

I reminded Scott (and myself, tbh) that all we needed was one shot. One! As luck would have it, just as we were about to nix the whole thing, the sun began to dip below the bridge, a train rolled past and the sky turned a soft pink – and we got it. Well, like, if needing to merge a couple photos together means we got it, then we totally got it. (And no, it’s not any of the ones you see above!) The next day, I placed an order for a big batch of holiday cards – the first time in a decade, maybe? – and I can’t wait to share it with you!

Other Things This Week

I purchased this kids’ book for obvious reasons (hello, CC!), and Lucy is obsessed. It couldn’t be cuter.

For the first time in a long time, my jean drawer is stuffed full of denim that I love. There’s no picking and choosing one pair over another – I love them all! I’m a wide-leg convert, boyfriend loving, high waisted addict. And while I don’t purchase new or very adventurous clothes often, denim is my biggest weakness. Below, I’ve rounded up the ones I’m loving this season:

My Denim Picks for the Season

1. slim boy jean | 2. the wide leg | 3. the mom jean | 4. high-rise skinny button fly | 5. the 90s cheeky straight | 6. high-rise cordova

My perfect parka is back in stock! (I’m obsessed with the Adobe color.)

Also: I could live in this (affordable!) teddy coat.

Made me smile so hard.

I somehow ended up on the list of this inspirational weekly mailing. I can’t bring myself to unsubscribe (I’m a sucker for happiness life hacks), and last week, the line below caught my eye. I’m working on this every day!

If you don’t control it, why worry about it? Because you don’t control it. If you do control it, why worry about it? Because you control it.

This wool rug is gorgeous, and only $300 for an 8×10. (For wool!)

In an effort to provide you with direct recommendations of items we use and love, we created a Yellow Brick Home Amazon store front! We’ll be updating it frequently, but we’re going to be pretty picky about what gets added, just as we are with the items we bring into our own home. It currently has 10 categories covering a wide range of item picks – from Lucy’s safety gate to her potty training lid (check out Lucy Loves), to our favorite lockset, speakers and monitors (check out Smart Home), to The Best of Stone & Beam (I can’t get enough). You can bookmark our store front, or you can find it anytime under ‘Shop Our House’ on the menu bar or in the blog footer!

WEEKEND SALES!

Wishing you all the very best weekend! We’ll be photographing a few projects at Tree House, taking a hike through Grand Mere State Park and catching up on sleep. Do you have anything fun planned?

“And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?” That old Jesus wisdom, although it presupposes trust in GodReplyCancel

I’m volunteering for Austin’s Open Days Garden Conservancy Tour in the morning and then checking out the rest of the gardens in the afternoon! It’s gonna be an interesting tour day, considering the freak freeze we had last night– a month early!ReplyCancel

Denim is my weakness, too!  I haven’t tried Everlane yet but want to.  I’ve been eyeing the 90’s cheeky straight pair – how do you think they compare size-wise to Madewell (my typical go-to)?  ReplyCancel

    • Kim11.4.19 - 6:31 AM

I find that I have to size down with Everlane. I’m a 26 at Madewell, but always get 25 at Everlane!ReplyCancel
