The Weekender: Lucy is 3, Reducing Stress, Studio Ghibli + My Secret Stock Sale Picks

Lucy is 3!

Did you know? Lucy turned 3 this week! (Just kidding, it’s all I’ve talked about.) Her one request was a unicorn cake – although when she says it, it sounds like unicoin cake, my heart! – and I used this kit atop a pink + purple cake to make her wildest dreams come true. She loved it.

Of course, this year was different than years past. We celebrated over pizza and unicorn cake with our nanny’s family, so that Lucy could be with her best friend (our nanny’s 3-year-old son, whom she’s known since she was 6 months old). We Marco Polo-ed with family. We received the sweetest texts and video messages from friends, sharing each one aloud with Lucy. Although it was different than we imagined, it was a day filled with love and celebration. I still got misty thinking about the day she was born (does that feeling ever fade? I hope not!), and I squeezed her tight at the time of her birth.

Happy birthday to you, Goose! We love you to the moon and back.

Here’s her birth story, how we document her weekly/monthly photos, and how this is how I edit and create our digital memories, if you’d like to see!

What Else?

I can’t stop, won’t stop watching roller skating videos on Instagram. They’re calming, remind me to pause, and they’re so, so beautiful. @neonkeon and @frankvinyl_skates are my current favorites. They’re like potato chips – you can’t watch just one.

This year has already proved to be the emotional equivalent of an ultramarathon. To help you hit the reset button, it’s key to know some quick, efficient stress-reducing strategies. Here are a few ideas[…]

How to Reset (or at Least Lower) Your Stress in 5 Minutes

Already wishing for the transition from winter to spring so that I can throw on my new cropped coat! (I got oatmeal to help conceal the Catfish fur I also wear every day.)

Currently watching anything by Studio Ghibli in our home. Ponyo is oddly wonderful, and Lucy can’t get enough. Have you seen any of them?

Last week, I shared in Stories that I needed to take a mental health break. When I thought I couldn’t possible have one more feel, Lucy reminded me that being creative is fuel for the soul. (Turned out, she was right.) And when I asked you to tell me something good, you showed up in droves! Out of the hundreds and hundreds of replies, these perked me right up, and I’m hoping they’ll bring a smile to your face, too.

I ordered these Madewell jeans during a holiday sale, and holy cats. I love them! I ordered a size up (whether that’s due to sizing or quarantine, I can’t say), and the petite hits me right above the ankle – no small feat in petite sizes! It’s my favorite wash, loose but not frumpy, like a perfect pair of boyfriend jeans. 10/10, would recommend! Speaking of which, Madewell is hosting another secret stock sale, and it’s good. Here’s what caught my eye:

Have a Relaxing Weekend

It’s been an eventful year, friends. Take care of yourself, breathe deeply, and seek out the time you need to recharge – however that looks for you! We’re hoping to make some progress in the snug and play room, with a lot of downtime mixed in. What are you up to?

This is quite possibly the cutest photo you’ve taken of Lucy so far ❤️ Happy birthday sweet girl! And can I say, I love that you note the TIME she was born, as well as the date. Based on my very unofficial polling over the years, this is something that a lot of people don’t know about themselves, but my parents have always made a point to wish me a happy birthday at exactly 9:34am on my birthday. Even if they’ve already said it. Even if we’ve already celebrated. I’m 35 and to this day I still get a call or text each year at 9:34am. It’s my favorite birthday tradition.
My plan for today is to make a cake and take it to my parent’s house to have a little celebration with them and the dog. They’re officially part of my quarantine circle but they’re both high risk, so I tend to stay away unless they really need something. But my dad was able to get the vaccine this week, yay! And my mom’s birthday was also this week, so we will have a little cake to celebrate birthdays and small victories.ReplyCancel

Stacy, I couldn’t love this more! Sounds like an awesome day ahead.

I tend to take the time thing a little overboard… throughout the day, I say to Scott, this is when X happened… ha! I’m an extremely nostalgic person, to a fault at times.❤️ReplyCancel

My daughter is three and calls them Runicorns (sounds like Rune-a-corns). It confused someone in the church nursery when they thought she was telling a story about an “ear of corn” instead of her unicorn stuffy. ReplyCancel

I think I’ve shared previously that Lucy shares a birthdate with my daughter and I can tell you the misty feeling never fades.  I spent the day reliving each moment of her birth….30 years ago.ReplyCancel

Stacy, I am crying right now. My grandmother always woke me up at 7:04 am (when I was born) to wish me happy birthday. I miss her so much. Thank you for reminding me that.ReplyCancel
