The Weekender: Exciting Two Flat News, A CC Update, Baby’s Breath, and What I Didn’t Know I Needed to Know

Saving the Floors

The Two Flat is officially on the upswing! We found happy homes for the vintage pieces we could no longer fit into the new design (but you bet we saved the pink sink and tub for us), most of the contractors are finished with their work, and now? Now, this is where things get Really Real. This is where Scott and I take over, where we hire a flooring team and concrete refinishers. This is when we need to decide to take on a job ourselves or allow someone else to do the heavy lifting – a decision that will be based on funds and our own sanity.

Most recently, we met with flooring contractors and have since hired someone! But wait, that’s not even the exciting news; we all think – we all hope! – that most (if not all) the hardwood flooring throughout the Two Flat can be saved! We have a combination of pine and maple, and there’s not a lot of rhyme or reason on which is where, but, it’s there. The next steps are for our flooring team to pull old nails and give things an initial clean, at which point we’ll make final decisions on stain (if at all), patching and room transitions. This is a going to be a huge turning point for our Two Flat!

How Is CC Doing?

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Two Flat, the last two weeks have been heavy on our hearts. Heavy on the day-to-day. We haven’t felt ready to do dive back into daily rituals; even sitting at our desk has felt, well, heavy, because Jack wasn’t there to act as a foot rest. (And so we’ve been sitting at the dining table to recoup, write and heal.) We’ve felt every bit of the love and kindness you’ve sent our way. Thank you, friends, so much.

Many of you have asked us how CC has handled the loss of her best friend, which means the world to us! CC has never met a human she didn’t love, but when it comes to other dogs, she couldn’t care less. There was only one dog for her, and that was Jack. If given the choice between a back rub on the sofa or a cuddle session with Jack, she will ALWAYS choose latter. So, yeah, she’s been sad. She sleeps where he slept. She nuzzles the toys that he played with. We let her do whatever she damn well pleases, because she’s healing, too. We wrap her in blankets and give her spoonfuls of pumpkin puree, and we tell her that Jack would want her to have a happy heart for our family. Every day, we’re getting closer to a more peaceful Chunk, but we know that like us, she needs time.

Other Things This Week

Have you seen Shrill on Hulu? During the winter television lull and in search of something to binge, Shrill popped up. We’re hooked! Aidy Bryant is everything.

Like me, Scott has slowly been converting his closet to staples from Everlane. It’s like every item was made for him. Their pocket tees are perfection, and he hasn’t stopped wearing this French terry hoodie. They make classics look really, really good. (Just check out the reviews!)

This rad Chicago sweatshirt was one of Lucy’s birthday gifts, and now I’m not-so-patiently waiting for them to restock the adult sizes of the same design!

Also counting down the days to warmer weather so Lucy can run around in the world’s most adorable jumpsuit!

It’s like, I didn’t know I needed to know this. I feel so liberated!

Blurry is beautiful. Agreed! (See Exhibit A: Chicago, and Exhibit B: Santa Monica.)

Oh, my gosh, do I like baby’s breath now?!

A DIY mistake that we’ve made, and hope to help others avoid, is making decisions too early. We encourage people to live in their space and establish the way it needs to function for them before making major changes. Giving time to determine needs in a space almost always results in a finished product that you’ll be happier with in the long run!

– Hey, you live and learn.

And now we’re all planning our own Nordic Winter Parties.

I just purchased another bottle of this for, oh, the 10th time in a row. My ride or die cleanser. Psst: Here’s my current skincare routine, if you’d like to see!

It’s always shocking to me when you pick up on the faint background music in my Stories, and you want to know: What is that beautiful song? My secret is listening to all of Ashley’s playlists on repeat. They’ll never steer you wrong!

WEEKEND SALES

What are you up to this weekend? We have plans to hang out with old friends in Grand Rapids that we haven’t seen in almost a year – entirely too long. They recently welcomed their first baby, and we can. not. wait. to meet him!

I bought a big bundle of baby’s breath on Jan 1st for $5 and stuck it in a vintage pottery vase and enjoyed it for an entire month! So simple and refreshing after all the holiday “stuff”. TEAM BABY’S BREATH!
So sorry about the loss of your sweet pup – losing a pet is a whole different kind of heartache… sending heart healing vibes your way!ReplyCancel

I have lots of comments for this post!
    1. Thanks for including my playlists :)
    2. Those photos of you and Lucy are so beautiful and precious and simple and wonderful – I just sent them to Ross as inspo photos to take of me/us
    3. I want that Chicago sweatshirt but would I just be a wannabee? Should I get the West Coast one instead?
    4. I listened to that cover of God Only Knows at the end of Shrill at least 10 times. It’s basically my favorite song and that cover has me constantly googling it to see if it’s a studio recording I can add to my playlists.
    5. Give CC a rub under her hippo chin for me <3
    The end xoReplyCancel

I was at that Nordic party and thanks for sharing the link as now I know there is a picture of me on the interweb with the worst pursed mouth, but enjoying myself so immensely.  It was the most lovely event on a cold day and inspired me to host my own small version of one with friends soon.  We Midwesterners need to do whatever we can to get through winter and embracing it with friends and candles and food and craft is just the ticket.ReplyCancel
