The Weekender: A Setback, the Most Colorful Home, a TV House We Love + All the Sales!

outdoor rug | vintage chairs | DIY porch swing

This past week has been a roller coaster of emotions, starting with the flooding we saw at the Two Flat. Chicago has been seeing a massive amount of rain, and despite every effort and expert we brought into our Two Flat during the demolition phase, no one could see this coming. Leaks from hairline foundation cracks (among other things) caused water damage to the drywall and newly installed millwork in the den, and now we have to rip out an entire wall down the length of the basement and address the issue from square one. Ouch.

It took us days to track someone down to help us solve the problem – the whole city cried out at once! – and I was mad for longer than I’d like to admit. The low-hum of consistent renovation stress caught up to me, and I carried my poor attitude through most of the week. But! We all know that nothing good comes from a sour outlook, so as the reality of the situation settled in and slowly subsided, Scott reminded me to focus on the small victories. We booked an interior painter! Tile install and exterior painting starts next week! And once that’s complete, we get to clean. I. Can’t. Wait.

The sun has started to shine again, and it’s looking like we might-maybe-fingers-crossed get some warm weather this weekend! We plan on drinking our weight in margaritas, riding our bicycles and watching Lucy run around the front lawn of Tree House. What are your plans for the holiday weekend?

Other Things This Week

After scouring the web for the perfect (hard wired) picture light for under $100 (some may call this the impossible task), I stumbled across this. It’s not a picture light, per se, but it is horizontally oriented, which fit the bill. Done! I can’t wait to share with you where we’ll be using it.

We’re diving into a summer campaign with Troy-Bilt – who remembers this 3-day backyard makeover we did with them? – and in an effort to provide you with the best content, we’d love if you could take 5 minutes to fill out this survey. By filling out the survey, you’ll be entered to win a $500 Visa gift card. Thank you for your feedback!

World’s cutest rashguard! (It’s tucked into Lucy’s dresser, waiting for a warm day at the lake.)

Who else is following along with Anna’s kitchen makeover? I can’t wait for the reveal!

We binge-watched Servant over the week, and while I wouldn’t recommend the show itself (the ending, are you kidding me, M. Night Shyamalan?), Scott and I couldn’t stop commenting on the house. The house! The floral wallpaper about did me in, and now I’m the hunt for something similar for the Two Flat’s dining room.

Kate’s new home had me saying, Wait, do I like yellow now?! This is going to be so fun to watch unfold.

In search of more comfortable clothing (hello, quarantine), I scooped up these utility joggers, and they’ve yet to leave my body. So comfortable! I have the mineral brown, but may go back for more colors!

Mood Board Week: Coming June 1!

Scott and I have been hunkering over the computer for days and days, all in an effort to finalize Two Flat design decisions. So many wet rooms! So many choices! And then we had an idea: As our own kick in the pants, we decided to have an entire mood board week! Starting June 1st, we’ll be rolling out our inspiration, current state and mood boards for all the bathrooms and kitchens in the Two Flat! Stay tuned.

IG I Love

@Ourhideawayhome first caught my eye when I noticed her plant wall, and it encouraged me to get a little more ‘wild’ with ours. And her house – the black house! Nahyun styles with restraint and grace and a whole lot of greenery. What’s not to love?

Memorial Day Sales!

Wishing you all a happy weekend, friends!

I’m so sorry about your flooding. Fellow Chicagoan here–we had a full flood last Memorial Day (and got hit by a microburst) so we upped our sump pump game and made it through this time without impact. There is nothing worse than the foundational water since a sump won’t help that. Wishing you speedy a speedy fix (and the patience to deal with it since it suuuuuuucks.) Oh and lots of good margs this weekend.ReplyCancel

Thank you, Karen. We found someone who is coming out on Tuesday to repair the issues he can see… and then they’ll be investigating to make sure there’s nothing else. Fingers crossed it’s not TOO bad, but we want to nip it so it never happens again.ReplyCancel

We are planning to build your porch swing for our patio this weekend and I plan to live on it all summer. So excited! Bummer about the flooding. We live in Michigan and this spring has just been a cold and gloomy rough one.!ReplyCancel

Ugh the flooding was the worst! We have contractors working on an addition to our house right now and seeing all of their framing materials floating in 8 inches of water in the backyard was so sad last weekend. That said – I am pumped for mood board week and to see what direction Kate goes with the yellow room! All the amazing bloggers I follow are just upping the game right now!ReplyCancel

Oh no, sorry to hear that! Seemed as if Chicago as a whole was dealing with it. But in better news, Kate’s yellow room is ????????!ReplyCancel

So sorry to hear about your basement flooding! My father in law lives in Chicago and had the same thing happen. He had to cut his out of town trip short. Is there room for a rain garden near the problem area? That might help in the future.ReplyCancel
