The Weekender

Three Oaks, MI // you are beautiful // photo via Yellow Brick Home

A very strange, very rare thing happened last weekend: We had time to kill. Us! Killing time! We had spent the handful of days prior at Tree House, wrapping up a project that – for once! – went as scheduled and turned out better than we had expected. (A unicorn project, essentially.) To celebrate, we decided to treat ourselves to window shopping and dinner in Three Oaks, MI, a neighboring town to Tree House. We picked through vintage treasures, paused for lattes and a muffin and took photos of our family (like the one above). When we were feeling good and tired, we decided to have an early dinner, but when we checked our watch, it was only 4 o’clock.

We wondered, that’s too early, isn’t it?

And so, we spent the next hour killing time. We literally laughed out loud as we loaded ourselves into the car, asking each other, what now? First, we filled the car up with gas. (Boring.) Next, we ran into a local coffee shop and picked up fresh grounds for the next morning. (Getting better.) Then we drove to the snowy sand dunes, watched the lake and pointed towards the already setting sun, a show and tell for Lucy. (There we go!) We moved without rush. I took a few deep breaths and focused on my shoulders, willing them to relax and lower. Then we turned around, sat down for dinner and ordered ourselves a big, fat pretzel to start.

Do you slow down enough? The balance, I think, is being okay with the nothingness. We’re not that good at it (some might say we’re very, very bad at it), but it’s a goal we strive towards.

What Else?

After sharing our day in the life vlog, so many of you messaged me about my skin and makeup. First of all, yeeshthank you! Second, I’ve been using this makeup stick to even out my skin tone (mostly along my T-zone and an age spot here and there). A little goes a long way! And after my favorite drug store brand kept switching their formula on me, I finally made the swap to this mascara years ago, and I’ve never looked back! I have non-existent eyelashes, and this stuff is buildable and flake-free all day long.

We watched Eighth Grade a handful of weeks ago, and I can’t stop thinking about it. Scott is always telling me that I’m the most nostalgic person he’s ever met; I still remember being that age as if it were yesterday. (As a teenager, I always told myself, never, ever forget this feeling, in case you have a daughter one day!) Have you seen it?

We’ve always enjoyed the holiday season, but it’s been made a thousand times more magical with Lucy in our lives. Introducing her into our traditions and creating new ones has felt so special. We’re sharing our most recent yearly ritual on the Crate blog!

Years ago, we DIYed a tree collar because we could not find them anywhere in person. It was a quick and easy project, but this year, we’ve seen them everywhere! We’ve since switched back to a faux fur skirt (like this), but I’m tempted to pick up a nice big collar, too. Here are some favorites:

I watched that movie a few weeks ago… and as a mama of a little girl too(Our Charlie June is 18 months already!) it made me think back to being in 8th grade (I’m 33 and that seems like ages ago) and reflect on how different Kayla’s experience was from my own and wonder what Charlie’s experience will be (worry even… sooo much pressure… and social media! Sheesh!)ReplyCancel

Same! There are so many things that I think will be exactly the same, but the pressures will just happen in a different way (like social media, to your example). Ugh, it was such a great movie and it really brought me straight back!ReplyCancel

Three Oaks is where the movie Prancer was filmed. When I was a kid, we passed it on our way to Pentwater every summer for vacation. :)ReplyCancel
