The Question Is…

What do you do when you come home and find your pup looking like this? (Guilty. And totally busted.)

Who knows if we shut the door too hard on our way out – causing our small art to fall, or maybe Jack got wise and pawed his way up the wall? Regardless, we found a splintered mess of our letter press question mark. After a stern scold and snapping a photo (of course), we hung it back on the wall.

Jackie’s Nylabone was inches from the crime scene, and our sweet man knew he was bad. While he loves his regular chew toy, it’s hard to resist such yummy, uh, wood. (Oh, hey now!) But gah! those puppy eyes. It makes it hard to stay upset for longer than all of two seconds.

It’s totally ridiculous, right? Up there on the wall gnawed to bits? Or maybe, ah, what the hell, it adds a bit of character? Let’s go with that one. And hey, what has your pup tackled lately?

Forunately our dogs have not chewed anything recently (they’re crate trained), but every once and a while Robert feels guilty and leaves them out. Then they (ok, mostly “his dog”, Freckles) destroy things (usually my shoes).ReplyCancel

Actually, I kind of love it. Chick used to get into the cabinet with our baking supplies when we were away — decorate the whole house with flour. THAT was charming. I would challenge you on the concept of him knowing he was bad though — he doesn’t know he was bad, he just knows that your furrowed brow when you come home goes away if he makes that face. He doesn’t know the cause of the furrowed brow, unfortunately. Darn dogs. So sweet and so crazy.ReplyCancel

  • Kim10.14.11 - 9:08 AM

That is awesome. Sweet and crazy is right! Thank goodness we keep our flour so high that even I can’t reach it!ReplyCancel

  • Aww, poor question mark. And Jack is too cute to stay mad at. I think it adds character. Several years ago, our Jack did something very naughty. Ben had a huge hunk of meat thawing out on the counter. Jack didn’t even bother to sniff it when we were home. We returned home to find half of the meat gone, on our couch. Oh yeah, and a broken plate.ReplyCancel

Our sweet dog, Lucy has eaten a cell phone, wallet with credit cards, knitting needles, and anything in the bathroom garbage. Our other sweet dog, Zoe has eaten raw chicken breasts, the grease catcher from the grill, animal stuffing and some chocolate chip cookies. I still love them both very much even after all the vet bills.ReplyCancel

Our dog, Olive, ate our fireplace… among many other things (she especially loved to eat my husband’s baseball hat collection). One second she was chewing on her bone, the next she was eating the wooden surround. She just turned two though and that all seemed to stop. I say keep the question mark up, it adds character and is a cute story… we, on the other hand, will be repairing the fireplace.ReplyCancel

It’s pretty silly to scold a dog for anything that happened more than 3 seconds ago. I highly recommend you read “The Culture Clash” by Jean Donaldson. It will change your life.ReplyCancel

  • Danielle10.14.11 - 10:48 AM

OOO boy, do I not know this look! Our smaller dog is always guilty and goes in spurts. The latest was a piece of fake spider web was hanging out of his mouth while the bag was shreded next to him. lol. Gotta love our furry babies.ReplyCancel

Our Chihuahua “Little Pickle” just chewed up a pink highlighter last night. Now I have pink spots all over our natural colored ottoman. Good times!!! I couldn’t even get mad at her when she looked up at me and had florescent pink all over her paws.ReplyCancel

  • Jaimie10.14.11 - 11:13 AM

You know, they did a study and found that if you scold them they will make the guilty face even if they’ve done nothing. I hear people say they can tell the dog has done something when they come home and he/she is making that face, but you have to wonder if they really know they did something bad, or if they are just responding to your cues.ReplyCancel

  • Kim10.14.11 - 11:21 AM

SO many good, funny stories! Highlighters? Fireplaces? Knitting needles and credit cards?! Ugh, they’re still cute.

Jaimie, every time we come home, Jack sits on his doggie pillow and won’t move until we give him the okay. We have to say, “hey, buddy, how was your day?” before he gets up and wags his tail high and proud. We don’t know if it’s because he’s waiting for our approval… or what? But until we greet HIM, he looks at us with full on guilt. Yeeesh.ReplyCancel

I found Rider on the counter the other day. All I had to do was look at her and she got down. Now that she’s almost 11, I can’t even get mad at her anymore. I’m pretty sure she knows when she’s up to no good. There are times when I come home and she has the guilty face but I look around and don’t see anything wrong in the house. Then, 2 hours later I’ll find a chewed up pair of underwear in the corner, or something that I don’t really care about.
PS, I like the chewed up question mark.ReplyCancel

He is gorgeous! My dogs no longer chew on stuff but once, Argus destroyed my favorite pair of boots and a bunch of (cheapo) jewelry = ) I have not found a pair of boots I love since! He also ate some DVDs I had just gotten for my husband. Uh oh, I still need to replace those, lol!

Dogs, I could not live without them = )

He looks so guilty! I think it does give it character. Mr. B ate a piece of junk mail once and he looked so sad and guilty.ReplyCancel

  • Adriana10.14.11 - 1:18 PM

Yep, those are the eyes of a totally busted pooch. I’d leave the Q-mark up though! I think it adds character! Plus, isn’t there something ironic about a chewed up question mark?ReplyCancel

  • Miranda Bouck (@boucksy)10.14.11 - 1:51 PM

Lovable, adorable, couldn’t-do-a-thing-wrong, Miss. Ally, (who you’re painting!) has decided to run amuck when it comes to chewing things right now. Her permanent teeth are growing in and she thinks it’s a free for all to chew anything in site! Including:
    – my puma tennis shoes
    – my hairband
    – my husband’s work boots
    – my coffee table legs
    – one of my college textbooks

But as YOU know, she’s the cutest thing in the world. So she gets a scolding…and then we’re right back to loving her regardless. Can’t resist her FACE!ReplyCancel

We (meaning, us and all of you) should make a book full of guilty pups and the mess they made. Just a big ol’ picture book. Does this exist? If not, we should totally do it.ReplyCancel

  • Kate10.14.11 - 2:36 PM

Haha, poor Jack. He probably thought it was a glorified stick! We’ve definitely had our fair share of chewed up stuff too!ReplyCancel

  • Sarai McDowell10.14.11 - 3:34 PM

    AAAH!
    he is TOO CUTE!
Let’s see, the last thing Kami and Kali chewed up were a pair of shorts (random right?) from my college days that needed to be thrown away anyway…They are doing a little fall cleaning for me..Hey, whatever works!ReplyCancel

Jack just wanted to get in on decorating the room. He’s sooo adorable and I like the “new” art. It’s certainly a conversation piece and it would make me giggle every time I looked at it. Thanks for beginning my morning with a huge smile!ReplyCancel

  • Meghan10.15.11 - 10:35 AM

I know all about those eyes! I’d totally put it back on the wall . . . adds character! Oh and I’m in the process of putting together a wall of art like your wall. You guys have inspired me! Cody’s “frantic” sniffing picture will be proudly displayed soon!ReplyCancel

Our 5 month old labrador has chewed my cellphone (still operational but ugly), and has ravaged the garden I am attempting to make in our new home. He will also chew anything he comes across outside, i.e. my gardening trowel and a couple of plastic pots. Thankfully not a chewer inside – the cellphone, a shoe, and a handbag strap were from when we first got him a couple of months old, and since then inside he’s been good.ReplyCancel

  • Felicity10.16.11 - 7:24 PM

Anouk has chewed numerous pairs of undies, books, dvds, cds, mobile phones, cordless phones, my steiff bear, remote controls, 3D glasses, normal glasses, sunglasses, my miniature bears, and probably my favourite thing – a packet of red jelly crystals she found in the pantry. Her red beard was a sight to behold.
    Yes, I have a bad dog…ReplyCancel

Scruffy just yesterday chewed through The Partner’s Nook charging cord in approximately 4 seconds — no joke.ReplyCancel

My first dog was terrible for chewing things as a pup. When we first got him we decided that he was safe with a bed in the mudroom. We were wrong. He made a mess of the room, ripped the hot air vent pipe off the dryer, gnawed a hole through the door and turned the ottoman into a nest – all within about an hour of us going shopping.ReplyCancel

This Today slideshow just reminded me of your chewed up letter press… chewed up dog toys that became art. You just happen to have art that became a chewed up dog toy and then art again. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/44892800/displaymode/1247?beginSlide=1#.TqBlTpxZiDMReplyCancel

He totally looks guilty! Luckily Banner hasn’t done too much damage recently.. but our favorite was when he totally destroyed our blinds in our apartment and we taped them back together and no one was the wiser..ReplyCancel
