The Pet Shop Turns 2 + a Giveaway!

This giveaway is no longer accepting entries. Thanks to all who participated!

TWO years ago, we opened The Pet Shop, a tiny slice of this Yellow Brick Home, and since day one, you’ve supported us. You’ve been with us as we’ve grown, improved and found our footing, so to speak. Since the debut of our Shop v. 2, we’ve been honored to work alongside nonprofit and no kill animal rescues. With your constant encouragement, we’ve been able to contribute 10% of every sale towards their mission – giving back to the community that brought us our three four-legged kiddos.

With well over 400 portraits painted, we feel beyond humbled to know that our work sits on your shelves, hangs on your walls and keeps you company at the office.

Your cheers and open arms have been nothing short of amazing, and for that, we thank you so much.

With that said, we’re often asked to provide a peek into a portrait’s process, and in honor of our birthday, we want to share that with you. If you follow us on Instagram (@yellowbrickhome), you may have seen Winston, a sweet lab from Brooklyn, from start to finish. Every painting begins with the solid background, followed by a detailed drawing for my brush to follow. From there, I’ll fill in the darkest areas first, working my way from the shadows to the highlights.

Depending on the style of portrait (Winston was a close-up, lending a more intimate feel), I may focus on the more detailed parts first (in this case, his face) before finishing the chest (again, in this case) and eyes. Scott will often come home to find my (er, your) pets sans eyes, but I often fill them in last, as they’re crucial to giving your pet that finishing sparkle. Winston was painted on a 6×6 canvas.

And just for comparison’s sake (and because it’s more fun this way), here’s the original photo of Winston. His mom, Emily, wanted to capture his big, goofy grin, and I was thrilled to do so!

But it wouldn’t be a birthday without a little celebration, right? In honor of our two years, we want to thank you with – get this – two things. (And don’t worry, we’ll eat some party cupcakes, too!)

ONE. Today only, enter code BIRTHDAY at checkout for $10 off any order over $30. Everything in The Pet Shop is eligible for this discount, including prints, gift certificates and custom portraits! There are a few things to mention, such as these:

  • Promo runs through midnight CST, Friday, September 14th.
  • Promo cannot be applied towards past or existing orders.
  • Please keep in mind that our current turnaround time for a custom portrait is 8 weeks, so this is a great time to get a head start on holiday shopping. Sunday, October 21st will be the last day to place custom orders for a timely Christmakuh delivery.

TWO. See that word giveaway up there? We’re going back to our roots to give one lucky reader the original pint-sized 4×4 custom portrait of their pet! And yes, this includes pups, cats, horses, fish and lizards – hamsters, gerbils and snakes, too!

  • Up for grabs: a 4″x4″ custom portrait of one pet from The Pet Shop or an $85 credit towards the size of winner’s choice
  • To enter: Simply comment on this post with your pet’s name and let us know: what makes Rover so awesome? Is it his cuddle abilities? His eye patch or his tiny toes? Or maybe he’s got some sweet dance moves?
  • For additional entries: Share this giveaway on Facebook or Twitter, then come back and leave a comment letting us know. (One additional comment for each method – up to 2 extra entries!)
  • Giveaway ends: Tuesday, September 18th, 5pm CST
  • Shipping restrictions: Anywhere in the world

The lucky dog winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Wednesday, September 19th. Good luck, happy entering and eat cake!

PS: Thank you to Winston’s mom, Emily, for allowing us to share him with all of you!

I want to get one of my family dog Star. He was our first dog and passed away from cancer. He had house trained himself when he was 8 weeks old. I also credit Star for me finding out I was pregnantReplyCancel

  • Kate Blanchard9.14.12 - 6:39 AM

My pup’s name is Wilson and he’s a rescue schnoodle. While he does have some pretty sweet dance moves (a low and a high spin), he has just this nub of tail. When he gets really excited, he can’t wag it fast enough so the whole lower half of his body starts shaking. It’s pretty adorable.ReplyCancel

  • Amanda9.14.12 - 6:40 AM

i dont personally have any pets, but my sister’s dog Pepsi is a big ole loveable puppy who came into their lives when grandma called them and said “i bought you a dog come pick it up” :)ReplyCancel

  • Lanie9.14.12 - 6:55 AM

My mom’s dog Shayna passed away earlier this year at 16, and I’d really love to get a portrait painted of her, with my mom’s late cat Oreo. That would mean so much to her!ReplyCancel

  • Amanda9.14.12 - 7:04 AM

My dog’s name is Molly and what I like best about her is her resemblance to a muppet. She had long legs and a fuzzy curly body and she loves to act like a clown with a big grin on her face. I also love how much joy she brings into my home by just being there.ReplyCancel

  • Rebecca9.14.12 - 7:13 AM

I have two pups: Oscar & Gracie. Gracie has an awesome amount of loyalty. She is only 7lbs, but is always the vigilant guardian of our family. Oscar is awesome because every now and again he gets these bursts of energy, runs in laps around the first floor, and will take a flying leap from the carpet to the nearby entry mat on every round. When he’s not running laps, he just wants to be held. Oh, and they are both really cute!ReplyCancel

  • Allison9.14.12 - 7:16 AM

Oscar, my cat, my love. Every time I sit down on the couch he walks up to me, meows one sweet meow and then cuddles up in my lap. It’s the best. I love that cat.ReplyCancel

  • Sarah9.14.12 - 7:20 AM

My wheaten, Fergus, is such a character who makes me laugh every day. He’s the best. :)ReplyCancel

  • Shauna9.14.12 - 7:25 AM

I have two pups – they’re both rescues also! Leo, a boxer/lab/pit mix, is a sweetheart & so loyal. Jaida, a shepherd/lab mix, is a major cuddler & goofball. They wrestle together all day long & are always cracking me up. I just love them! Thanks for the sweet giveaway, I love your pet portraits! By the way, it’s very cool that you donate a portion of your proceeds back to animal rescues.ReplyCancel

daisy was our beagle who loved to play hide and seek, but most off all loved to cuddle.ReplyCancel

  • Rachel9.14.12 - 7:33 AM

Good Morning and happy birthday :)))
We have two pups, Luke and Amy and they have such different (but cool) personalities. Luke is the sweetest gentlest guy and he is an excellent big brother to our other pup Amy who is our foster failure and our tough pittie mix. She is such a wiggle worm and they have a blast together. Our pups just make life better; the days are brighter and happier with them by our side.ReplyCancel

  • Lexi M9.14.12 - 7:53 AM

My cats name is Oreo and she is awesome because she licks plastic bags haha!ReplyCancel

  • Jess S9.14.12 - 8:09 AM

  • Emily9.14.12 - 8:25 AM

I was just saying this is what I want for Christmas – so it would be even better to win it! My cat’s name is Opie – he’s such a lover and a great ham! We take him on walks through our neighborhood. He’s very popular for his mustache – you’d love painting him ;)
    Congrats on the anniversary!ReplyCancel

    I facebooked this! Yay!ReplyCancel

  • liz9.14.12 - 8:32 AM

Our Jack Russell Terrier, Emma, is awesome. She’s 9 years old, but thinks she’s still a puppy, and has a personality way bigger than her stature! We love her to pieces!!ReplyCancel

  • Brenna9.14.12 - 8:35 AM

My sister has two dogs, Beamer and Gizmo. They were very hesitant about each other at the beginning, but now they are best friends and partners in crime (read: getting into the trash)! Gizmo is an avid snuggler and will burrow into anything he can find. Beamer loves to hoard all of the stuffed chew toys on his bed and nap on them. We love them!ReplyCancel

  • Hayley Cook9.14.12 - 8:36 AM

My rescue dog, Roo, was kind of a mess when I first got her. She’s a timid, tiny, gray Chihuahua who initially didn’t want to be touched, but she’s warmed up now! She loves to give just one nose kiss to you when she’s happy you’re petting her, which is what I love about her :)ReplyCancel

  • Sarah9.14.12 - 8:44 AM

We have two cats and a dog (all rescues! Sound familiar?) There names are Zephyr, Lace, and Porter. I love my cats because they are always wrestling with each other, providing hours of entertainment. And our dog, Porter? He’s a wicked smart German Shepherd who would do anything for his family. And is best friends with our two year old daughter. It melts my heart to see them together!ReplyCancel

  • Sarah9.14.12 - 8:45 AM

I have two sweet girls, Bijou and Summer, who are cuddle monsters! One is a lbd (little brown dog) and the other is a gorgeous pittie! We love our girls!ReplyCancel

  • Hannah9.14.12 - 8:48 AM

Kiko is special because he loves head pets so much that he sticks just the tip of his tongue out in bliss and closes his little eyes. Possibly the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!ReplyCancel

  • Leslie9.14.12 - 8:57 AM

We have two cats – my husband belongs to our oldest, Naarah; our daughter and I belong to Noonien. They chose their people.

I fell in love with Noonien online – petfinder.com – because of the foot shaped (or lopsided upside down heart, as I call it) spot on his face. His profile hinted that he was vocal, but I had no idea until after I got to know him. He is very loud when he speaks, and his meow sounds like he’s yelling “MyOM!!!!” (mom. me!) He is very clumsy for a cat (which is a good fit because I’m very clumsy too), can’t quite understand that he has to draw his claws in to let go of something, and we run into each other on a regular basis since we’re both running most of the time. He’s my boy, named after the Star Trek character who created Data the Android. <3ReplyCancel

  • allison9.14.12 - 9:00 AM

Maple… she’s a six year old “puppy” who thinks she’s a human :)ReplyCancel

  • jessie9.14.12 - 9:02 AM

Carra is worthy of a portrait for the simple reason that she is the best dog ever. she’s super photogenic (when not trying to eat the camera) and she’s got some of the cutest ears that are screaming to be immortalized in acryllics. Plus, my mom painted a portrat of her, so I’m scheming to now have a seies of Carra pictures. Her new favorite lounging pose is on her back, which I think that would make a pretty awesome shot for you.ReplyCancel

  • Monika9.14.12 - 9:07 AM

Wow, Kim! The likeness is uncanny and you definitely captured the soul of that adorbs pooch. Well done! Congrats on birthday #2 and best wishes for continued success and happiness. My days are set right by reading your blog. Thank you!ReplyCancel

  • Lindsey Singletary9.14.12 - 9:07 AM

Monroe is my standard poodle pup and Wednesday is my beautiful baby boy kitten. They are both so amazing in their own ways.

Monroe is a silly girl who loves everyone and everything. Wednesday is the coolest cat in town, mostly because he is a grumpy old man, except to his mama. =)ReplyCancel

My dog’s name is Fruli and she is a papillon. While they are a bunch of qualities that make her awesome, I would say that her ninja skills are at the top of the list. She always finds a way to sneak up on you when you are looking for her and sneaks out a pair of underwear or socks to snack on the rug by the front door. Besides that, she gives the best cuddles and always knows when you need them the most.ReplyCancel

  • Kathryn W.9.14.12 - 9:23 AM

My awesome dog is named Athena (you painted her a few months ago!) and she loves to snuggle!ReplyCancel

  • Sara9.14.12 - 9:29 AM

  • Jorden9.14.12 - 9:35 AM

My dog Fry is a beautiful dog! He is a rescue from New Leash on Life and he is perfect! He is brown with a nice white shield on his chest.ReplyCancel

  • Ammo is special because he always knows how to make me laugh!ReplyCancel

  • Kellynne9.14.12 - 9:37 AM

My dog is Fry (a NLOL alum!). As far as personality, Fry is amazing because overall he is a very mellow guy, but he gets these random spurts of crazy energy that have us laughing til we’re crying. Besides that, Fry’s the cutest dog I’ve ever seen with bright yellow eyes, big ears, and a cute white patch on his chest. There’s just too much about him that’s awesome to choose one thing!ReplyCancel

  • RachaelRei9.14.12 - 9:39 AM

What makes Comet awesome: his grey old man beard and adorable floppy ears. And his skinny Whippet paws are always crossed so properly when he sleeps. :-)ReplyCancel

Lola is my adopted 5 year old border collie mix. What makes her special is her ability to tune in to my mood and give me cuddles or make me laugh when I’m feeling down!ReplyCancel

  • Stef9.14.12 - 9:42 AM

My pup Roscoe is a 2-year old rescue from Tennessee (via Companion Pet Rescue he was delivered to me in NJ, where I was living at the time, on their way to CT). Roscoe loves to go hiking (and hunt bugs!) and to get his belly wet in the pool. He especially loves hanging out with his doodle-cousins, Miley and Melo!ReplyCancel

  • Anita Vassallo9.14.12 - 9:43 AM

Sebastian is a games pony – he is my daughter’s best friend, champion and partner. We bought him at auction for $500, and he has given more back than we could ever put a value on. He also entirely darling, with his dark red coat, flaxen main and tail, and white star. He deserves a portrait!ReplyCancel

  • Tiffany F9.14.12 - 9:59 AM

Devo is my dog’s name. He’s a whippet, get it? :)
Devo is a professional snuggler, ear flapper and kickstander. His signature move is the “dead bug”. He has also been accused of being a 35mph couch potato.
    Whippet, whippet good!ReplyCancel

  • Trish T.9.14.12 - 9:59 AM

I have two rescue cats (both found as abandoned kittens) named Jack and Rue. Jack is so special because he was already 14 pounds when Rue entered the family, yet he is super courteous with her; he is my gentle giant. Rue is the ever-resilient, petite, fearless one…she never fails to give me a chuckle.ReplyCancel

  • Annie H9.14.12 - 10:01 AM

Marshall the lab doxie mix always knows how to make me smile. Seeing his cuteness after a long hard day at work instantaneously makes everything better.ReplyCancel

  • Crystal9.14.12 - 10:03 AM

Well, I have three pets total. Koira Martini Girl is named for the martini glass shaped white splotch on her face and on the back of her neck. It gives her a super unique look, but means it is impossible to find any non-customized merchandise that looks like my dog!ReplyCancel

  • Holly9.14.12 - 10:04 AM

Oh where to start?! My wiggle-butt, Jax, is a 3yo brindle pit mix I picked up at the Philly SPCA. He’s convinced he’s a lap dog and everyone who meets him falls in love. My favorite moments with him are when I come home on my lunch break to let him outside and he’s still sleepy, he’ll lean his head into my legs while I say hi. I also love sleeping in with him on the weekends and instead of my alarm I am woken by 70 pounds of pup laying across my stomach ready for ear and belly rubs.ReplyCancel

  • Heather {ModernMealsforTwo}9.14.12 - 10:04 AM

I’m not sure if there’s one thing that makes Mojo, our Great Dane, awesome. It’s really a combination. She’s super sweet and chill (total Dane qualities), but she also has a serious personality and she’ll let you know when she’s not a fan of something. Cameras are near the top of that list. Considering she’s the dog of two photographers, you’d think she would be used to it. But I swear she knows when pull out a camera, even if it’s via the iPhone.ReplyCancel

  • Chelsea9.14.12 - 10:13 AM

My puppies are sisters, Zelda & Scooby. Their dachshund sass (which they both have in abundance), extraordinary cuddle skills, and big soulful eyes make them incredibly unique and lovable.ReplyCancel

You forgot to mention RABBITS in your list of pet! And wouldn’t it be fun to paint a one-eye bun like our Pirate Pete! :) It would be hard to chose between his frog and prarie dog poses though!ReplyCancel

  • Becca9.14.12 - 10:20 AM

My dog howie is definitely deserving of a portrait – he’s the sweetest german shepherdy mutt ever, and is completely loyal.. he’s known as the brown shadow in our house =)ReplyCancel

I can’t choose between the two! Bruce Wayne and Alfred are my pups and they not only have super-hero backgrounds, but also delicious giant ears (Bruce), and a fantastically slobbery block head (Alfred). They would be a joy to paint – I just know it!ReplyCancel

  • Emma9.14.12 - 10:24 AM

Kai is not my dog – she’s my niece, but I would love to give a custom portrait of her to my bro! She is the sweetest dog and is so excited to see everyone who walks through the door!ReplyCancel

  • Carrie @DreamGreenDIY9.14.12 - 10:24 AM

    Happy happy birthday, Pet Shop!!!!

We still can’t get enough of our own custom portraits of the brood – They are THE most talked-about pieces of artwork in our home!

Since you already know all about Rocky, Ginny and Luna, I’ll mention my dad’s beloved black lab – Parker is the doll of the family and I SWEAR to you, she was a human in another life. She looks straight into your soul when gazing up at you with her big brown eyes. So thankful to have her as a little “sis.” =)ReplyCancel

I’ve got three smittens (smoochable kittens) so I’ve got to give it up for all three. We have Maxwell who is the most talkative animal I have ever met (fo’ real, like he won’t stop until to pick him up and carry him like a baby, who we also believe is an old gay man trapped in a cats body. We have Griswold (our only little lady in the bunch) who follow me around so much I lovingly call her “Kid Sister”. She will only drink water by tapping her paw in her dish and then licking it off. Lastly, we have Tobias Funke (brother to the Griz) who doesn’t realize that he is 13 solid lbs of love and it afraid of everything. He is also a huge lover: scratch his tush and he loves it so much he starts drooling. Long comment, but I can’t help it!ReplyCancel

  • Leah9.14.12 - 10:33 AM

Cooper is bold, confident, egar to please and that’s why we love him. He’ll lie on his bed perfectly content until the alarm goes off, then he’s up in our faces telling us it’s time to start the day so he can go play ball.
    Happy Second Birthday!ReplyCancel

I didn’t have pets growing up but always wanted at cat. My husband and I moved in with his parents for a few months while transitioning (i.e. job hunting in 2009), and I got to enjoy their cats. Pfluff kept us entertained (she plays fetch) and loved (she’s the best snuggler) as we waited. Even though we’ve moved, I still consider her mine!ReplyCancel

  • Mary Frances9.14.12 - 10:50 AM

This is such a great holiday gift idea! I have two crazy puppies, but I think I might use this for my boyfriend’s mom. Gabe was originally her father’s and came to live with her after he passed away. Gabe definitely picked up some old man tendencies and he has a precious little bearded face.ReplyCancel

  • Jill9.14.12 - 10:54 AM

My “puppy” Daisy is nine. She is my family’s first and only dog. We adopted her from our local shelter six years ago after she was picked up as a stray. She has been with our family through all the rough moments. She is my mom’s best friend and has kept her company as she dealt with all three of her children going off to college. When Daisy joined us, we never would have guessed such a skinny, scrawny, jumpy dog would change our lives forever.ReplyCancel

  • Helen9.14.12 - 10:54 AM

Happy second birthday! My rescue Billy is larger than life. He makes me laugh all the time, manages to be both incredibly smart and ludicrously dumb at the same time, he’s handsome as can be with a face that you can’t resist smooching so it’s just as well that he’s a champion snuggler too!ReplyCancel

  • Beth9.14.12 - 11:00 AM

I would love a portrait of Rufus! He’s got a ton of special quirks, but I just love his sad, sappy hound eyes so much.ReplyCancel

  • Megan Zavertnik9.14.12 - 11:27 AM

Phoenix – An apricot Havanese, he is a lovely cuddle buddy. He always needs to know where I am and more importantly where he can be so we can be touching, even with just a paw. The best skill Phe (that’s his nickname) has though is he’s ability to sense when I am feeling a bit blue or even sick, then his cuddling ability hits overdrive and gives me that little bit of loving that I was needing.ReplyCancel

I would love to win a painting of my pony Cloud. She has changed my life and I love her so much! My parents bought her for me as my first pony when I was 12 years old. She was untrained and I trained her myself! I competed with her in Eventing which includes Dressage, Stadium Jumping, and Cross Country jumping until she had to be retired in 2009 due to arthritis. I still have her. She hangs out in my back yard and is still my very best friend in the world!ReplyCancel

  • Claudie9.14.12 - 11:34 AM

I have two cats (Gabby and Olive). Gabby is a talker in the sense that she meows as if having a conversation with you at almost every opportunity. Her name was already Gabby when we got her from a rescue, but the name is certainly fitting! Olive is so sweet. She’s also quite insistent when she wants attention and I love that about her. If she feels like you’re taking too much time, she will find a way to get right in your face so you can’t miss her.ReplyCancel

Our dog is Ruby and she is a rescued Rhodesian Ridgeback. There are so many reasons why we love her and why she is the most amazing dog, but here are just a few: her absolute delight and full body wiggles when we come home, her eagerness to learn new tricks, her love of cuddling, and her ability to get just about anyone to love on her. :)ReplyCancel

Josie is currently known as the puppy who loves too much–partly because she is sweet and cuddly and partly because she can’t bear to be alone and will do bad things to get you to come back. She drives us crazy sometimes, but shes ours!ReplyCancel

My dog, Oliver is one of the most unusual looking dog’s I have ever seen. He has these huge ears that stand up straight all the time, even when he is sleeping. We rescued him 4 years ago and he is the best cuddle buddy anyone could ever have! People stop us everywhere we go to ask what kind of dog he is!ReplyCancel

Happy anniversary!! Thank you so much for the chance, one of these has been on my wish list for a long time. :) I’d say the most awesome thing about Dante, besides how he’s made me a better human being, is his snuggling. It’s best in the winter, because he gives off a ton of heat for being all of 14 pounds, but so healing when you’re not feeling well. I even lend him to my parents for just that reason if they’re stuck in bed! :)ReplyCancel

Our girl is Trudy, a Black Russian Terrier. She is the softest, fluffiest, sweetest, most loveable dog. When we go for walks people are so attracted to her that pretty soon we have a whole group of people around us…um, her. (and we aren’t walking anymore.) I kid you not, people will cross the street just to pet her. We have even had people roll down their car windows as they are driving by and shout that they love our dog. Seriously. The girl is like a people magnet. But that’s a good thing because we hope to use her as a therapy dog in the future. She just exudes love.ReplyCancel

Bruce is my cat. He’s a Maine Coon. When we adopted him from the shelter we didn’t know he was a Maine Coon. He was just the sweet little kitten with the one white toe. When he started growing at a rapid rate that’s when we found out he was an MC…surprise!

He’s grown up to be the Maineiest of Coons. So curious and playful and sweet. He’s like the Jack Black of cats only not annoying and actually funny.

He’s also crazy handsome and lets me dress him up like a shark: http://statigr.am/viewer.php#/detail/259402419569268868_2729965ReplyCancel

We call her “Moma Josie,” because she’s always trying to take care of my kids. Napoleon gets more love than anyone else in the house! My daughter (18 months) is constantly hugging & kissing him. He’s my goofball. Always throwing toys for himself, & making us laugh. I couldn’t imaging life without them!ReplyCancel

Our pup Luna (Treeing Walker Coonhound Mix) is probably the cutest dog ever. I have yet to meet a cuter one (okay I’m a little biased). But, what really makes her awesome isn’t her stunning good looks, but rather the fact that she wants everyone to be her best friend. She is a lover. Don’t get too close if you don’t want kisses. You’ve been warned.ReplyCancel

I am so honored to have a painting of my sweet Kitty on the way (I just got your shipping notification), and would love to eventually get one for each of my cats that have passed/will pass, including Buttons, who left me 7 years ago.

She was the first pet I remember having. My mom and I came home from pre-school one very cold January day. I was 3 years old. Buttons came running into our front hall, and it scared me terribly, as she hissed at me. We shooed her out of the hall and went inside. Once in, we noticed she was standing in our window, looking sad and cold. Of course, she ended up coming inside. Over the years she gave us many… erm, thrills, such as escaping every Sunday morning and climbing a tree, escaping and making us chase her around the neighborhood for an hour until she got bored and decided to come in, knocking books onto my mom’s head as she slept, jumping inside the oven while it was on (and no one noticed for about 5 minutes – she luckily just had singed eyebrows)and more. As much as she was a unique handful, I loved her dearly and miss her a ton.ReplyCancel

My dog’s name is Hurley (maaaybe because we were obsessed with LOST for awhile). There are so many things that make me love him. How happy he is when my husband and I come home, the way he stretches when he gets up in the morning to how excited he gets to go to the dog park. However, the thing that makes him the best, is how much he has helped me with my depression. Sure life is still hard, but he has helped me so much. I am currently in nursing school, but I have been looking into getting him certified as a therapy dog. I can’t wait to take him into the hospital on my day’s off and let some folks who are missing there own pets, spend some quality time with my pup.ReplyCancel

Edward is my boyfriends tuxedo kitty who like many other pets, has an infinite list of reasons he’s so dang loveable! He’s got this cute little goatee and one of the sweetest faces. He loves to cuddle first thing in the morning making it impossible to want to leave bed. And he does all sorts of silly things like playing in paper Chipotle bags (we got a fantastic video of it once!). Best of all though is that him and his brother Alphonse always know when you’re not feeling well and go above and beyond in cuteness and cuddling. They’ve both been such good companions to my boyfriend since he moved out of the small town to the big city on his own for school and I’d love to get a portrait of even just one for him.ReplyCancel

My pup’s name is Emma, and you’ve painted her before! She’s a big, slobbery Olde English Bulldogge, and my husband and I love her to death. The thing that makes her shine is her personality; she loves everyone, and even though she’s a honking 70-pounds, she wants nothing more than to sit in your lap and be loved on — especially right before bedroom and as soon as you wake up in the morning. We catch her sneaking into our bed at night, just so she can snuggle against us. She’s our love bug. :)ReplyCancel

I have or should I say had two papillions and a horse. The latter which were named Star, Snoopy & Dug! Star and Snoopy, the “happy-ons”, are 11 this year and such great little personalities, full of life! Unfortunately I lost Snoopy on July 26th, he was attacked by another dog while out on a walk and died on the way to the vet. We miss him so much. Dug was the first horse I’ve ever trained from an unbroke youngster! Boy was he something else. If he didn’t like something he would give you a firm no and that was that. He had my heart all over the place. As life would have it I lost Dug in an accident on July 4th, he also died before the vet could come. I don’t know why I was faced with such tragedies in one month but things are getting better. I still have my little Star. She’s a great dog and happy as can be. I would love to get portraits of all of them one day and when I saw the contest I just had to try. Anyway…. I really really want to go to Les Puces someday, how awesome! i imagine I could spend weeks there alone. Thank you for sharing. -Claire in Portland, ORReplyCancel

You’ve already painted my frantic sniffing Cody but I’ve got a few furry nephews that would love to have their painting on the wall. There are so many things about Cody that make him so special but one of the funnier things about him is the way he sits in my lap when I sit in the floor. We have a couple animals, but Maverick and Negs are our favorites.

Maverick is our old (17 yrs) black cat, who was actually born on my bed! He’s a badass and super chill. He was born with brilliant blue eyes, so he was named after the surf spot Mavericks, which later turned yellow.

Negs/Negaduck is our khaki campbell duck (mostly brown with gorgeous lacing). She’s a huge cuddler! If we sit on the ground, she’ll walk into our lap, nuzzle her bill into us and reach her head up to our neck and give us a hug. If you’ve never had a duck hug… it’s absolutely adorable.
She regularly gives jumping hugs to our cats and dogs, even though I’m not sure they enjoy it, heh.ReplyCancel

There is nothing I want more than to give my mom a portrait of our Karma. She started out as my dog- I got her when I was 17 and still living at home. She stayed at my parents’ home as the family dog after I moved out. She turned out to be my mom’s favorite dog of all time- they had such an amazing connection. Karma passed away this May. We all miss her terribly. My parents just made a photo wall in their entry-way and there is a blank spot that a 4×4 portrait would fit into perfectly. I know first hand how amazing your pet portraits are- I ordered Baby dog (who is featured on your Pet Shop page) for my best friend and she went on to order one of Flynn herself.ReplyCancel

Awesome giveaway! I have three dogs and a cat right now, and they are all special. My senior chow mix Kaia has been with me the longest. She’s starting to get a bit senile, which is sad and scary at times, but she’s still happy to see me when I come home so I know she’s doing well. She has a black and pink spotted tongue that is so adorable. My other dogs are two male Italian Greyhounds that I adopted (I would never buy a puppy from a breeder), they are my very own odd couple. You would think they’d been separated at birth by the way they took to each other. Sometimes I catch them making out on the couch. And my cat is Athena, a petite brown and white tabby, who I adopted because she looked so much like my first cat Icarus. She likes to be carried around on my shoulders and we talk to each other in meow. She also likes to sleep under the covers next to me.ReplyCancel

This is an incredible giveaway!! and…. Zeus, our pitbull/boxer mix, is awesome because he really is the best cuddler in the entire world (and insists on sleeping in the middle of my boyfriend and I!). But maybe the reason for this is even more awesome. My boyfriend rescued Zeus from his local when he was discharged (medically) from the Marines. Before Zeus (and me) he couldnt’ sleep, ever (PTSD is a horrible, horrible thing). But after getting Zeus, they formed this incredible bond and Brian, with Zeus cuddle up RIGHT beside him at night, was finally able to sleep better. They most definitely rescued each other, and sometimes if I think about it, like when writing this, I tear up a bit. So thankful that Brian and Zeus found each other. And then a year later, I came along, and Zeus has two cuddle buddies :) I’d totally love to surprise Brian with a portrait!!!ReplyCancel

I would love to have a portrait of our black lab mix, Petra.

She’s such a beautiful little thing, but even better is the joy she has brought to our lives.

See, my husband and I weren’t even looking for her when we found her.

But one day there she was, our Petra. We were at the shelter to help a friend find a puppy. We always felt that if we were to have a dog, we’d get one that was a little older, because everyone wants the puppies, but we think the older ones are just as good and are just as in need of love. So we were walking around the area where the dogs over the age of one year were kept.

Ms. Petra saw us and walked up to the front of her cage and nervously wagged her little stub of a tail. She gave us a shy smile and sat down, patiently waiting for us. She was so polite.

The mister looked at me with his puppy dog eyes and I just knew we were both goners.

So that’s how we found our girl. The shelter had extensive records on her (she was born there) so we learned that she had been returned twice. Not because she was bad. Quite the contrary, the first time she was returned after a day because they just didn’t want her. The second time she was returned because the owner was moving.

At first I was angry that anyone could leave such a sweet little girl. Then I realized, they were just bringing her back for us.

We also learned that her birthday is my husband’s birthday. I’d love to be able to give my husband her portrait for his birthday.ReplyCancel

A portrait of my pooches is still the #1 thing I want for Christmas. Maybe this Christmas Daniel will finally give in to my pleas!

I think the reason why I want Turk memorialized in a painting is because he has come so far. His fear issues, resource guarding, and sometimes aggression towards other dogs would have made him a difficult dog to adopt, but he is our baby and he has come such a long way to become the awesome dog we knew he could be all along! :)

Nacho, our kitty, was the only kitten left in his mama’s litter when the two of them were rescued from a factory 11 years ago. He didn’t like people much at first and kept his firey personality right up to the end when he was snatched from our backyard, probably by something even bigger and fiercer than he was (he never believed such a creature existed). Roosevelt, our black cat, loves to take naps on his back with his legs splayed out – good thing he’s covered in fur or there might be a little indecent exposure! He even leaves you a little sliver of bed to take your nap too!ReplyCancel

Daisy the dog, my parents yellow lab rescue, can destroy ANY toy, including a kong, within a day. Luckily she knows the difference between her toys and our shoes… She’s got the jaws of an alligator but the heart of kitten!ReplyCancel

My puppy’s name is Henry. He’s the sweetest bulldog in the world. He’s very energetic, especially for a bulldog, but at the end of a long day, all he wants to do is cuddle on the couch. I’d love a portrait of him for my husband’s birthday coming up!ReplyCancel

Our dog Stanley the bassador has character for days and I love how his hound tail is always straght up and wagging when we’re hiking around.ReplyCancel

My Roo is my “perfect little angel dog-baby”. He doesn’t even roll his eyes when I say that. Even though he isn’t really perfect all the time, I love him to pieces.ReplyCancel

My little black cat– she was a stray who adopted us 5 years ago and we call her Miss Kitty. She’s a tiny 6lb all-black short hair who is the most-proper southern lady you’ll ever meet. We joke that before she got down on her luck (and became homeless here on the streets of Nashville), she ran the local kitty junior league….or a high-end brothel. It’s tough to tell. But she’s always regal and rules our house with an iron-velvet paw! (Also– I love your blog! Thanks so much! I always look forward to your posts!!)ReplyCancel

Spike is our loved Jack Russell that we rescued (but who rescued whom?)as he was a Katrina victim. He is wonderful and never plays the victim card but only has joy and love to share with all he meets!ReplyCancel

Maeby is my effervescent, brilliant, space-invading, rescued pit bull girl. I’m utterly smitten with her charm, her hugs, her playfulness, and that big fat grin of hers that I get to see every day. I’d be beyond thrilled to have a portrait of her crafted by my hands-down, absolute favorite pet portrait artists! Congratulations on turning 2!!!ReplyCancel

Hmm, its hard to chose one dog, from our pack of five! I’ll have to chose a dog we are dog sitting right now. The portrait would be a great little gift for her owner Chris, who is currently is South Korea.

Maddie thought she is a strange dog, is sweet. She makes some strange movements every time we feed her. I should really take a video of her! A funny thing she does is that she will get on the sofa and sit straight up looking at the wall. She can stay like that for a good while. Its as if she is upset.ReplyCancel

This is my first comment while I’ve been following your blog for a year now.I’m writing from France so please, excuse my English.
My cat named Brioche is so sweet, I love when she comes right close to me in the bed, just under the blanket and let her head on the pillow. She likes me stroking her belly very much and she does this since I got her, 10 years ago. I love her for many reasons but this is my favorite one because I can feel her so close to me when she sleeps with me for a while.ReplyCancel
