The Guest Room Is Taking Shape!

Our guest room is not only shaping up, it has literally taken on a whole new shape!

This post is in partnership with Brooklinen. All Brooklinen products are 20% off, their biggest sale of the year! Promotion automatically applied at checkout.

With my parents visiting soon, it became important for us to finish up the messy, dusty work in the guest room as soon as possible. As a small refresher, the guest room and kitchen share a wall, and that wall became the linch pin of our entire kitchen design. Moving the wall would make our guest room much smaller, but it would allow us to reconfigure the kitchen for the better. Over the last 2 weeks, the wall was moved, the guest room became smaller, and the kitchen became wider.

But while the guest room did scale down, it somehow feels much more efficient! The closet is larger (with a pocket door!), and we still have a dedicated wall for a dresser and mirror. We’ve always loved the color in here, and just yesterday, we finished up the drywall work and rolled on a few fresh coats of paint. Scott also installed all new millwork to match the rest of our home – the last room in the house that needed it. We’re still in phase one of this ‘new’ guest room refresh, but I couldn’t resist sharing how things are quite literally shaping up in here!

Should We Move the Bed?

Last week, I accidentally kicked off a debate when I mentioned that we were thinking of pushing the queen-sized bed against the wall, daybed style. We knew it would afford our guests more room to move around, but the general consensus was that no one wants to sleep on the ‘wall side’ of a daybed, especially as an adult. We polled our friends and family that use the room the most, and they agreed it wouldn’t be the most comfortable. Plus, they don’t need the extra space since they’d be spending all their time with us anyway!

My daybed dreams were dashed, but comfort is our top priority. I’m a firm believer that anything can be both beautiful and functional, so we left the bed as-is and…

Cozy, Beautiful Bedding

… we upgraded all the linens to our favorite Brooklinen styles! We’ve been using Brooklinen bedding for years, and it’s the first place we look for seasonal colors, subtle pattern play and the most comfortable sleep. Knowing that we love Brooklinen bedding this much, we want our guests to experience this same joy.

We chose to mix and match a few fabrics and subtle patterns, such as a Heathered Cashmere duvet cover, Lightweight Quilted shams and a Luxe sateen sheet set (you have to feel these!). We are diehard Luxe sheet fans – they feel so cool and crisp, yet somehow soft, how? – and alternate between Linen and Heathered Cashmere duvet covers on our own bed. For the guest room, we thought, let’s mix it up, and we can build on these as we need more!

If you’re looking for a full set in one fabric, you can save 25% off the top with Brooklinen’s Luxe Hardcore Bundle. This includes a sheet set, extra pillowcases and a duvet cover – and you can still build your set to suit your personality. And, and! Right now, Brooklinen is having its Birthday Sale, their biggest sale of the year, where all Brooklinen products are 20% off on their site. They don’t have sales often, so now is a great time to treat yourself to bedding that you’ll look forward to snuggling up in – especially pricier bundles such as their Cashmere and Linen collection.

Above the bed, you may notice I changed up the art, too! Does it look familiar? This is the mirror that hung above Lucy’s crib in her nursery. We found it at a local architectural salvage, and have always loved how much history can be seen through the frame’s patina and speckled glass. We love the scale in this room and how it reflects the window light!

A Place for Everything, and Everything In It’s Place

Next to the closet, I added this hook rack (in addition to several hooks already on the back of the door) and hung a piece of vintage art. Eventually, the closet will be outfitted with shelving where our guests can stash their weekender bags, and we’ll use the closet rod to store our seasonal coats/clothes.

Behind the door, we’ll be adding a slim sideboard for towels, travel-sized essentials and a place for our guests to drop their phones, jewelry and smaller items. A large mirror will bounce the light around and offer our guests a place to get ready in the morning.

The sideboard and mirror have been ordered and should be here soon, at which point, we can finish up the closet system and call this room complete!

Scott and I agreed that, although smaller, the guest room feels so much more functional now! The old nook that used to tuck underneath a large HVAC soffit felt dark and cramped (see how it used to look right here). The space has been reconfigured in a way that is highly efficient, a petite escape for our friends and family.

I don’t think a guest room has to be spacious, but you’ve nailed it with all the right things. It’s hard to see, are the side tables just little shelves? I still love the color too!ReplyCancel

But what will you do with the vintage school desk that used to be in the guest room? Interested parties need to know!ReplyCancel

Trying to decide if we’ll be listing it on the flea, or hoarding it for future Lucy. Eek!ReplyCancel

Would you share the details for the bed itself? I’m searching for a new bed and I can’t seem to find the exact thing. I don’t want to make one but I may have too. The room is beautiful and I love the dark color, so restful and cozy. ReplyCancel

I’m curious. How did you make the choice not to paint the ceiling black, too? I ask because we have a back hallway (I call it a hallway but it’s only about 4′ x 5′ … go 1927 Tudor bungalows!) which I recently painted all black (except for the white trim). When the ceilings disappeared, the space suddenly looked bigger and receded at the same time, emphasizing the bedrooms and bath off of it. But it was a difficult choice, and now that’s the only ceiling in the house that isn’t white. I still sometimes wonder whether it should go back to its original color. So, I’m wondering how you all decided to go this way. Thanks!ReplyCancel

Oops. When the ceiling disappeared … (trust me, there’s only one).ReplyCancel

We usually do paint the ceilings the same color, but in here, we didn’t want it to feel too closed in. I full believe that painting everything the same color came make small rooms seem larger by ‘receding’ the walls. In here, we still needed some white elements to bounce around with the mirrors (another mirror is coming!).

In the end, I’d say it’s personal preference.????ReplyCancel
