The Bedroom Blahs…Resolved

Boy, do we feel better. Not only have the hubs and I been snug as a bug in our freshly made over bedroom, but I’ve actually woken up on the weekends to find Scott still sleeping in, and well past 9 am. For those of you who know my man, you’d know this used to be an impossible feat. For me, most weekend mornings are spent dozing ’til breakfast has come and gone, while he busies himself around the home as soon as the sun rises.

Of course, this is all thanks to me (right, honey?). Surprisingly, I’m not mourning the demise of our orange bedroom. Really, I’m not. (And for those of you joining in now, you can see how I got us in this whole mess here, here, and here). As much as I loved Behr’s Pumpkin Patch, I’m finally realizing the calming powers of what I formerly thought of as the snooze-fest Relaxing Green, also Behr. Here’s how we turned that yawn-of-a-color upside down and actually injected some fun into it:

Of course I knew I threw in a curve ball with the vibrant rug, but my heart skips a beat every time I look at it. Although Scott wasn’t fully convinced from the get go, even he couldn’t be happier with how well it plays off our newly framed print, The Most Complicated Thing You Own (and ain’t that the truth?). This Row Boat Press original, trimmed to size, tucks neatly inside the shadowbox of an Ikea Ribba frame. We love that it can only be seen while facing the hall (or laying in bed, depending on how you want to look at it), which makes it feel like our own secret print. Love. It.

At first we were a little worried that the television and black frames would be a stark contrast to the barely-there-green, but we find that it works against the black and white motif in our playful throw (a steal from Overstock). And once you factor in the aqua sheets, pinstripe bolster, and punchy rosette pillow (DwellStudio for Target), well, we got ourselves a room with no apologies. The layering of textures, pattern, and color is what makes this room so darn us.

And while we no longer have the Relaxing Green flanked by a wall of the cheery pumpkin hue (buh-bye, racing stripe), we find that the installation of our good ol’ Ribba picture ledge is still the right touch needed to add height while anchoring the main attraction (a-hem, you know, the bed).

No, the tranquil green won’t punch you in the face, but who needs all that drama in the bedroom? What used to be one heckuva color extravaganza is now a toned down haven. We’re loving the clean palette with the pops of mustard, red, and aqua while relishing in the cool, white duvet and sun drenched curtains.

So, how’d we do? Is anyone fuming mad at me for painting over the orange Crush? Go on, I’ll understand. Even I can’t explain why I do the things I do. Just don’t go making me do something drastic. Again.

I absolutely love the way you write!
I also love what you did with the room. I used to like things all matchy-matchy, but as I find myself liking things in all sorts of textures and colors, I think these rooms with the “curve balls” – as you called them – are much more my style.

I do think the pale walls allow for a lot more mixing and matching and general fooling around with design. :)ReplyCancel

I think you guys did a great job! I love how you two are not affraid of mixing color and patterns! The way you matched the yellow in the art above your bed with the rose pillow is awesome!ReplyCancel

and where did that green paint come from? did you just buy it or is it the same color as your family room? i like that it flows with the green from the living room. now your place doesn’t seem as broken up from different colors.ReplyCancel

Jill, thank you! It’s good to hear that you’re not missing the orange. The “new” color is called Relaxing Green, by Behr. It’s the same color that used to be the accent stripe behind our headboard. And I agree, I’m feeling a nice flow between rooms now! Less broken up, and more put together.ReplyCancel

hi Kim! I discovered your blog from Mrs. Limestone, and I love the new bedroom! I have decided to start a bedroom makeover and am feeling guilty about wanting to re-paint yet another room. So, thanks for the inspiration!!ReplyCancel

I’m with Scott on the can’t-sleep-in-even-on-weekends thing. Maybe we need this light calming green? Either way, nice work!ReplyCancel

Love. It. is right! All the things I love: The yellow pillow, your “secret” print and the fact that it is secret. I love stuff like that…the way you make your bed makes me want to jump right in but don’t worry, I won’t…it’s too creepy, right? (I’m totally asking for approval, here. :)).ReplyCancel

Thank you, everyone! Wow, it’s so good to hear that no one is missing the orange. It seems like we finally have that calming room on our hands…

Kasey, I have the perfect place for you to put that pillow – in your entryway on top of your craigslist bench/stool. What a splash of color that would make! (That is, if you decide against your current fabric choices).

Kim, you’re welcome any time. In fact, it’s all I can do to get your sister and her hubby to hang out! Busy, busy bees.ReplyCancel

i was just thinking that if i ever came to tap your shoulder during the night again, maybe this calming room would prevent another freak out! that’s kinda funny to think back on – and p.s. why i’m really writing you again is because i want to know where you found that little stripey pillow. did you mention it? i’m too lazy to look back!ReplyCancel

    • Kim7.16.10 - 10:43 AM

Jill, we got the navy pinstripe pillow from Ikea! It’s also where we got the cover for the gray one, and we used an existing pillow form we already had on hand.ReplyCancel

You bedroom is beautiful! I really love the simplicity and calmness the room now has since the orange wall was painted. I’ve been wanting to paint our bedroom and now after seeing yours I’m in awe. I’m going to use your picture as leverage to win over my partner.

    It’s very picturesque. :)ReplyCancel
