Smart Home Integration for the Renter vs. Home Owner

This post is in partnership with Homes.com.

We’re living in the future, folks! With a fairly minimal investment, we’re now capable of controlling the lights, blinds, music and temperature in our homes without ever lifting a finger. We’ve even set our personal home automation system up with ‘scenes’ that determine the settings of all the smart products in our home in one fell swoop. For example, the voice command, Alexa, trigger evening, lowers all of the blinds in the house, dims our interior lights and turns on exterior lights. Magic.

We’ve invested significantly into our home automation system since we plan to be in our home for many years to come, and it’s an investment that has eased every day routines significantly. On the flip side, we’ve been asked many times which of these smart home additions might be a good fit for someone who rents their home rather than owns it. For example, should a renter invest in a smart thermostat? What about a smart speaker or soundbar? We teamed up with Homes.com to take a deep dive into these questions, breaking it down by product and giving our final verdict on each. See the full article right here!

Whether you’ve been hesitant to jump into home automation or you’re a seasoned veteran, not every product is one-size-fits-all – hence the somewhat dizzying, endless options available! If you’re in a short-term living situation, which solutions are best for you? If you’re in a home for the long haul, should you make the leap?

We get into it on Homes.com today, so let’s go!

As a landlord, I was wondering about the return of adding home automation in my units for tenants. That’s not what your article was about, but I don’t really think it’s worth it for a landlord. But I do see that a renter can add their own things!ReplyCancel

Interesting! We added smart blinds to one of our rental units, and they have the capability to be added to a smart system – IF the renter would want to do that. This is a good thing to consider though.ReplyCancel
