Renee’s Bedroom Redo: Part 2

The last time we worked with Miss Renee, it was a living room head to toe makeover. New Flor tiles, a refinished coffee table, and clean, fresh paint all around were just a few of the changes. And you may remember that we did it all in one day. Oy.

Now here we are 8 months later, and we’ve come back to tackle that bedroom of hers. While it’s the perfect blank slate (just feast your eyes on these bare bones befores), we gotta start somewhere, and we decided to take a different approach by breaking up the work over several days. And task numero uno? That closet. City living quarters usually mean barely there storage, and this bedroom is no exception.

While we love the look of a posh, wooden hanger, we can’t say that we dig it in a closet. This may work for some people, but for those of us with limited space, we’ll keep those hangers and stash ’em in the coat closet. The extra weight of your jackets are better suited for the durable wooden hangers, while your blouses, tees, and other delicate items will do a-okay on skinny, velvet flicked hangers (seen here in cream, albeit unused, on the right).

And the shoes. Like every girl, Renee has her fair share. Boots, sandals, and running sneaks. All of them waiting for a home.

First things first, we had Renee go over every item of clothing and decide if it should stay or go. If it hadn’t been worn in a year, it was outta there. And we gotta hand it the girl – she breezed through her whole closet and both dressers like a champ. I happily folded up her donation pile and watched the stack grow. And grow. Oh, how we love a good purge.

And that big purge did us good. As a result, we were able to completely eliminate the second dresser, and were beyond thrilled to see that we could fit the remaining one in her closet by eliminating the door. Talk about a space saver. (But don’t worry, we’ll give her clothes some privacy. More to come on that). The hubs used anchors to raise that bar and give Renee’s clothes some breathing space above the dresser while I took those flocked hangers and put them to use.

Extra boots, rarely worn heels, and towel storage were brought to the newly raised shelf, where Renee could grab them as needed. And while that top shelf is now extra high to my 5-foot frame, it works for the much taller Renee, who barely needs to raise a tippy toe to grab her once-in-a-while kicks.

As for the rest of the shoes? Well, thanks to Renee’s can-do attitude, we were able to eliminate the overflow to the donation pile (too tight, too worn, too – what was I thinking? Outta here!) and the rest fit nice and snug in her existing closet shoe caddy.

And that completes day one. Well, night one. The closet clean up was just a few hours in the evening after a day of work. We even fit in some fun and drinks to toast the occassion. Can’t beat that.

Any other closet organizing tips you’d like to share? Are you on board with the flocked hangers like us? Heck, maybe you have the perfect solution for stashing your shoes (perhaps baskets by the front door, shelving units, or even clear bins and Polaroids?). Let’s share those tips.

Wow, talk about a purge! My closet is a similar size, and I got a $7 extra rod that hangs from the top rod. I hang my pants on the bottom one and it works really well. But the dresser is fabulous too. Do you happen to know where that big mirror is from?ReplyCancel

Hi Amanda, the extra rod is an excellent idea! I’ve been in touch with Renee to find out about that mirror for you, but she may chime in as well.ReplyCancel

Hi Amanda, Renee here- I got the mirror from Urbanest in Andersonville (here in Chicago). Here’s a link to the site- http://urbanestliving.com/Urbanestliving/Home.html I think they still have some available in the store. When I bought it, it was on sale for about a $100 or so.ReplyCancel

  • […] Oraganizize the beejesus out of our bedroom closet. I’ve got big plans for this. Our master bedroom closet is super tiny. So I plan to do some general organizing, purging, and donating, but also to paint the closet and maybe add a snazzy new light fixture. I love makeovers of tiny spaces. For inspiration, see here, here, here, and here. […]ReplyCancel
