Penina and Greg’s Bedroom Redo

When our good friend Penina asked for our help to vamp up her and her boyfriend Greg’s bedroom, we jumped at the chance.  We constantly email, chat, and text each other our home decor finds on an almost daily basis, so I was more than flattered that she asked for the hands-on treatment.  She already had the right things to make the space oh-so-perfect: pillows, cozy throws, artwork, and one heckuva curtain set.  The catch? Her shiny purchases were tucked away in storage, unsure of what should go where and how high to hang what.  Take a peek at the bare bones space before…

…And add the secret stash to her gorgeous glass lamps, matching end tables, and a pretty spiffy dresser (which she scored on craigslist and gave a fresh coat of glossy, perfect white).  The result is a perfectly sophisticated black and white slate with poppy prints, bright sheets, and a kick-off-your-shoes all around good feeling:

Everything you see in this room was already purchased and selected by Miss Penina herself, including the artwork.  On the left side of the room, you’ll see that she took bold, graphic paper, and paired them with crisp, white mats in a punchy black frame.  We flanked them on either side of a print she found at The Love Shop, and by rotating the frames, we added a touch of spunk while exaggerating the length of her wall.

You may also notice that we nixed her wicker storage chest (hiding heaps of sweaters), and we swapped it for a black bin that formerly held blankets in their living room nook (yup, we flip flopped the contents, too).  The new chest pairs with the black frames throughout the space quite nice, while popping between the pile rug and decorative pillows.

Originally propped on the dresser, her mirror now hangs high and proud above the bureau below.  By clearing the clutter (or, hiding the laundry basket), we gained a new wall for art, and we eagerly stole a print from her living room to pair seamlessly with the gaggle of frames already home to the room.  The full length mirror you saw before? Every girl’s gotta have one, but it doesn’t mean it looks good (unless you’re able to score a free standing gem).  It’s now hiding behind the bedroom door so she can sneak a quick peek before walking out each morning, and no one’s the wiser.

We’ve layered an Ivory Burnout Jacquard Curtain over black panels to create a dramatic yet romantic look that mimics the paper art on the opposite wall.  But I gotta give my girl props on those curtains for picking up the fabric and hemming the black panels herself.  Scott and I mounted the curtain rod 11″ wider than the actual window frame on each side, and by doing so, we added almost 2′ of curtain drama, texture, and layering.  And don’t you know that makes our heart flutter.

Penina was on the right track with the photo shelf, but it was originally mounted just a smidge too high.  We lowered it by a measley 4 inches, but it now lends itself as a part of the room, rather than floating “above” it.  With the the continuity of the black frames, all the artwork feels like a part of the same family, even though each frame holds a different print, paper, or photo.  For this shelf, we paired an Ork print with photos taken by Greg while he was visiting Guatemala.

The fresh, yellow roses in a glossy black vase and a pair of white pillar candles set off the Nadeau end table find, and you’ve got yourself quite the moody set up.  Ah, how romantic.

And holding the entire room together is this show stopping sequined pillow (scored at HomeGoods, no less).  I’m pretty sure I actually squealed as I placed it on the bed.  But oh, isn’t she lovely?

Penina already had a vision for her room, and we simply helped to take her from square one to the finish line.  The black and white layering of textures, prints, and fabrics was all this room needed, and the collection of accessories and furniture provided by my lady sure made our job easy.  We hope that Miss P enjoys her room as much as we enjoyed sprucing it up.  I just wonder… does a sweet, new room make for sweet dreams?

Hey, kids… Don’t forget that our spankin’ free giveaway ends tonight at 6pm EST.  And don’t we all love free?

Thanks, Kim. We really really love our revamped bedroom, especially when people tell me it looks like a catalog! It came together so nicely, something I couldn’t have done without hours of agony. Plus, Rider really likes sleeping under the bed on the rug now. So we all win.ReplyCancel
