Vlog: A House Tour!

We’ve been blogging for almost 8 years(!), and in all that time, we’ve yet to take you on a video tour of our current home! Yikes. In an effort to show you the flow of our home and how the rooms connect, we’re walking through every space in this house – yup, even The Scary Room and our equally Scary Bathroom. (And it only took us four takes – ha!) Along the way, we’re sharing our favorite projects and what’s left in our renovation future.

If only we had thought to do this same tour on the day we moved in! Although we didn’t have the foresight to do so then, you can take a peek back in time right here, where we share our home before, during and after demolition. (This photo is still a favorite; it’s sometimes hard to believe we lived here during that madness.)

PS… If something in our home caught your eye, you can always shop our house

That was fun! It looks almost done, but keep in mind this comment comes from someone who doesn’t live there. ?ReplyCancel

  • Carol3.22.17 - 7:06 AM

I had NO IDEA there was a bathroom off the dining room!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.22.17 - 7:40 AM

Haha, we don’t like to talk about it!ReplyCancel

  • Jess3.22.17 - 8:39 AM

Great tour you two! It looks like you’ve added an additional flat aluminum bar at the top of your kraft paper roll since the original DIY. I am considering a similar project – did you find that needed to keep the paper from slipping or some other reason? Thanks!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.22.17 - 9:13 AM

Oh, great catch! I had to really think back about that… but yes, we added it to keep the paper to lay nice and flat while we write. That project has come in SO handy to organize our projects in this house!ReplyCancel

  • Susan @ Jubilee Furniture3.22.17 - 9:11 AM

Wow – everything looks fantastic! I vote you KEEP the shower since that would be super handy for your guests as opposed to them having to go upstairs to bath/shower. Such a lovely home and so well done, Kim and Scott!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.22.17 - 9:16 AM

That’s Scott’s argument, 100%. But man, it would be so much sweeter as a little half bath. And a shower off the dining room has always felt funny! We may compromise by pushing the wall back a bit (it shares with the back wall of the workshop), so things won’t feel as tight. Maybe. Time will tell!ReplyCancel

      • Joy3.22.17 - 10:23 AM

Would you ever consider putting the entrance to the bathroom via the workshop, so the bathroom is not right next to the dining room?ReplyCancel

        • Kim3.22.17 - 10:30 AM

We have, but then walking through the kitchen and THEN through the workshop (which would eliminate our workbench completely) seems pretty awkward, too.ReplyCancel

  • Gaby3.22.17 - 9:39 AM

Love this tour! House looks amazing! I’d personally keep the first floor shower for your guests easy access. Although that bathroom needs some work on being as polished as the rest of your lovely home. Good luck!ReplyCancel

  • Jane3.22.17 - 10:52 AM

Thanks for your house tour! it was quite lovely!ReplyCancel

  • Nia3.22.17 - 11:00 AM

Love the house tour- so nice to see how the rooms all flow together and how the colors all work together. Also, had to comment, my 100 lb pit LOVES his donut also. He carries it around everywhere in a similar fashion. It is his most prized possession and we are so glad we found them online!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.22.17 - 11:11 AM

OMG. CC and her “ball.” They each have one, but they fight over the SAME one as only siblings do. The smell of rubber permeates this home, haha!ReplyCancel

  • Molly3.22.17 - 11:26 AM

I’m in camp ‘lose the shower’ simply because that room is quite small and looks like it would feel cramped to get dressed in. I would definitely feel a bit weird showering off the dining room when people could just be chilling in the living room. Your guests would have a nice large bathroom with privacy upstairs where they could relax and there’s ample room to get dressed. Plus they’re not walking through the main part of your house. And since the master bath isn’t an ensuite, it wouldn’t feel like I’m barging into someone’s personal space to shower.ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.22.17 - 12:25 PM

IF we kept the shower, I’m pushing to steal some room from the shared workshop wall. But I totally agree with you about sharing the prettier bathroom upstairs!ReplyCancel

      • lsaspacey3.24.17 - 10:29 AM

However, if the scary room becomes another bedroom, there is potential for a lot guests staying at one time with only one shower.ReplyCancel

  • Amanda Jones3.22.17 - 11:55 AM

I saw that cute planter by you kitchen door!!! Details if you know where it is from.
    Thanks in advance!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.22.17 - 12:26 PM

The stand is vintage, and the hex shaped bowl was picked up Sprout Home, a really cute Chicago nursery. :DReplyCancel

  • Karen Smith3.22.17 - 1:12 PM

Oh! Totally in for keeping the 3/4 bath of the dining room! Is it weird? Sure! Is it awesome to have a guest bathroom? Definitely!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.22.17 - 1:48 PM

I’d like to meet an old house that wasn’t weird! Haha.ReplyCancel

      • Karen Smith3.24.17 - 9:06 PM

So true, we have so much to work out with the quirks in ours! Wouldn’t have it any other way though :)ReplyCancel

  • Ryan3.22.17 - 3:19 PM

Your house is just so well done. BRAVO!

Definitely keep the 3/4 bath downstairs. It’s in a totally awkward spot, yes, but not having it at all would be worse. Two showers FTW!

Also, I just put a 3/4 bath that looks to be the same size (just shy of 6×6) in my little backyard guest house and it works a lot better than I thought it would. I used a curved corner shower pan/door (takes up less visual space than the one you have does), the smallest Godmorgon vanity Ikea sells and a regular sized toilet (you could go smaller/shallower if you wanted, but I was trying to keep costs down as much as possible). The room has 9-foot ceilings and light and bright walls and that helps a ton. You can see a couple of (admittedly terrible…they’re temporary until my photographer is free) photos on my Airbnb listing at casitacorona.com. Good luck!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.22.17 - 3:28 PM

Cutest Airbnb award goes to you, Ryan! Thank you for the inspiration – I think the bathrooms are a pretty similar size. Yours gives me hope.ReplyCancel

      • Ryan Malone3.22.17 - 7:02 PM

Thanks so much, Kim! It was a labor of love for sure. The whole thing is 165 square feet, so it’s a lot jammed into a TINY space. If you ever find yourself in Austin and need a comfy place to stay, look me up! You can meet my little pittie Edie you painted last year too. :)ReplyCancel

  • Charlotte Lindsay3.22.17 - 3:40 PM

Your home is so cute! I love that you guys kept the home decor fairly neutral yet every piece is so unique and makes such a statement. My two favorite spaces are both your work room and the little nook. Both spaces hold so much character despite their small size.ReplyCancel

  • Sheila3.22.17 - 3:51 PM

Nice video tour and what beautiful work you have done thus far!
Having a full bath with a shower on the first floor is valuable even if the location is not perfect. I wouldn’t get rid of it. My last place had 2 full baths upstairs but only a powder room on the first floor and my mother hated to visit because her knees bothered her so much on the stairs. It’s not pleasant to think about but if you have a friend or loved one in that situation or if either of you are temporarily incapacitated, it would be useful to have that option. When I was house hunting for my current place, a first floor bath was a must-have and my realtor said it was a common request.ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.22.17 - 3:54 PM

This is such a great point and something we didn’t even think of. Thank you, Sheila!ReplyCancel

  • AlisonG3.22.17 - 6:06 PM

Thank you for the tour. I vote keep the downstairs shower. For guests and resale value. Love that your ^..^ talked to us, so cute!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.22.17 - 7:15 PM

She talks to us ALL day long, I didn’t even have to TRY for that sound clip!ReplyCancel

  • Bonnie3.22.17 - 11:02 PM

I didn’t think I could be any more obsessed with the amazing job you guys have done but I guess this video proved me wrong ? Still in love with your master headboard so much! And Libs in the beginning? Heart. Melt. ?ReplyCancel

  • soozey3.23.17 - 8:55 AM

WOW! Cutest house of all time, and I loved your tour and narration! Please reconfigure and keep the shower–(instead of the awkward parallelogram shape or whatever!! Look to Europe for inspo!) what a fun challenge to make it small and nondescript but cute–you can do this! Your friends and fam seem important to you, and having a place to shower for their comfort and convenience seems like that would take precedence (so yeah I’m projecting since I dont know you!) :) keep it up!! love it love itReplyCancel

    • Kim3.23.17 - 8:59 AM

Thank you for the feedback, Soozey! I already know I’m going to lose the shower battle, so we’ll have to find a way to make it work… great tip about looking for European inspiration!ReplyCancel

  • Haley3.23.17 - 11:55 AM

Echoing what others said about a first floor shower being a great asset, but most importantly:
    1. What is the plant in the studio by the window? Looks like some kind of palm, but haven’t seen it before and wasn’t on your favorite plants post (my plant bible basically)
    2. The art above the bedroom vanity isn’t on shop your house, it looks like some sort of star chart, which is something I’m obsessed with. Can you share?ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.23.17 - 1:22 PM

Hi Haley! The constellation print was found at a thrift store, and we had it framed through framebridge. And that plant was picked up after the big plant post! It’s an anthurium, and so far, she’s doing great!ReplyCancel

  • Malissa3.23.17 - 12:13 PM

Such a dream – you guys should be very proud of your hard work, the turn out is amazing!ReplyCancel

  • Julie3.23.17 - 3:09 PM

I vote to keep the shower. I know it’s odd to have a shower off the dining room, but since you’ve got the plumbing there, keep it. It will be better for guests – better to have it there than all the way upstairs. I love the video tour, thanks for sharing!ReplyCancel

  • Allie3.23.17 - 3:20 PM

Started looking for tiny full bathrooms just out of curiosity to see if I could help you keep it. This one speaks to me but you would obviously have to do something to contain the water!

    • Kim3.23.17 - 5:09 PM

That is so cute, and I think it may even be smaller than our room! Thank you so much for that link.ReplyCancel

  • Sam3.23.17 - 8:42 PM

Why not incorporate the bathroom into the bedroom so it’s not right off the dining room that way, the doorway not in the dining room! I’d also leave the shower just perhaps a glass one to give it the illusion of space. Also, Roxul insulation is your best friend to shield from the noise of the bathroom! Just my two cents having had something similar :) it’s a lovely house!!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.27.17 - 10:02 AM

Sadly, I don’t think there’s room off of the guest bedroom for a bath, but I wish!ReplyCancel

  • Kelly Jensen3.25.17 - 6:41 PM

Another one here for keeping the shower. It’s hard to tell the footprint of your bathroom, and you’d have to reroute some plumbing, but I bet you could fit a full size shower across the back wall where the shower and sink are now. Move the toilet closer to the shower and put in one of those super skinny sinks on the wall with the door (or even on the wall with the window if it’s skinny enough!). You can do it! And your guests will thank you :) Skinny sink like this one maybe: http://www.signaturehardware.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/small_image/430x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/3/9/396061-white-wall-mount-sink.jpg
Or combine the toilet and sink like this!: http://www.digsdigs.com/photos/2016/07/24-wooden-unit-with-a-sink-toilet-and-a-storage-compartment.jpgReplyCancel

    • Kim3.27.17 - 9:55 AM

You’re so right – I’d actually love to push that back wall back a bit (borrowing room from the workshop) so that we can put a full length bath across that wall, and we can add a tiny sink to the right of the toilet. Scott doesn’t seem on board with this idea (why?!), but I think it’s a good compromise for the both of us!ReplyCancel

  • Tanja3.25.17 - 10:04 PM

That was so fun, thank you for walking us through your home.

On the bathroom debate…Leave the shower downstairs in my opinion. You want your guests to have a place to shower vs having to trek upstairs. We only have one shower in our house (despite three toilets) and when we have guests (mostly my parents) it gets very busy in that one bathroom.ReplyCancel

  • Jenny3.26.17 - 8:51 AM

Just wow. Your home makes me feel so inadequate in my tiny Chicago condo. Just in love with all the details and design elements. I think you keep the shower – maybe keep it open without a door?? VERY beneficial for guests. I’d have no problem using it!ReplyCancel
