Our Globe, er, Plant Stand

A couple weeks ago, Scott and I took the dogs on an extra long walk along The 606 (Jack and CC are as obsessed with this new path as we are!), and as we took a break in the grass along Milwaukee Ave, we noticed a hot pink sign that boasted a MOVING SALE! Never being able to resist such tempting marketing (suckers, these two), we popped in and picked up a $2 planter for the One Tail house, as well as a $5 plant stand for us:

The sale was being hosted in an old art studio with an everything must go! mentality, and we were surprised no one had taken this home! We asked the sellers if this was, in fact, a plant stand, but no one really seemed to know, claiming it had always just sort of rolled around the studio. Maybe it was an old end table? Or maybe, at one point, there was a planter in it? No one could remember, but we were happy to take it home.

It’s been sitting in the studio ever since, waiting for a light sand and a good cleaning.

Earlier this week, Scott pointed out the round notches inside the frame, suggesting something had to have rotated on an axis. So, maybe, a globe?

A quick internet search pulled up all of these illuminated globe stands by Jens Risom! It seems so obvious now, doesn’t it? If you have a moment, check out this video interview with Risom; what a cool cat (and can I please adopt him as my grandpa?).

Is it really a Risom? Scott and I have been debating this for a few days now, noting that while most of his globe stands have brass casters (except this one!), ours does not. In every other way, it hits the nail on the head – shape, height, etc – although there’s not a maker’s mark in sight. But none of those that we’ve found for sale have a mark either.

Is there a Mid Century enthusiast that could provide a little more insight? As payment, I provide to you an adorable Chocolate Chunk (for scale, obviously):

And one handsome Jack (again, for scale!):

Risom or not, we’re thrilled we scooped it up when we did, and we plan on finding it a home here. But, you know, as a plant stand.

Also, happy birthday, America! Have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend, all.

You know, a globe makes sense for that frame. I wouldn’t have thought that if I just saw it for sale on a lot. The worn wood is very pretty so, I’m sure it will look nice with a plant.ReplyCancel

Man, I love CC. Not to slight Jack–he’s adorable, too. But there’s something about CC (Her face. And the rest of her.) that makes me so happy every time she pops up in my Instagram feed. I guess I’m so in love with her that I finally had to say something!ReplyCancel

She’s somethin’ else, isn’t she? Jack and CC could not be more different – CC is so smooshable, kissable, has big, wide eyes and will force herself upon you for belly rubs. Jack is serious but goofy, and he only welcomes kisses on his terms – although, he allows his mom and dad to force them upon him. :)ReplyCancel

After looking at the one on etsy, I would say it has to be one of Risoms. Shape and scale of all parts look identical. One thought I have…is yours walnut like the etsy one, or could it be teak? It looks like some MCM teak, possibly. That could explain the different wheels, if different woods were used, they may have used different wheels to go with each type.ReplyCancel

Hi Susie, we’re pretty sure it’s teak. The more we look at it, the more we’re pretty sure it’s a Risom as well. Regardless, we love it all the same!ReplyCancel
