Our Children

Other than a snapshot on our freezer door (and of my childhood cat at that; albeit, one of the greats), there is nary a photo of our current children in this home. And by that I mean those furry guys that roll on our bedclothes and lick the couch. Aw, those kids. We love the heck out of them.

A few months ago, I spotted this image on Apartment Therapy, and my eyes zoomed in on those large black and white portraits. I didn’t know I wanted it until I saw it – that same euphoria you get when strolling through the flea market. Bingo.

Since then, I’ve been sneaking up on Maddie under blankets, catching Libby in the act of… well, eating or sleeping (because hells bells, that’s all she does), and trying my darndest to snap Jack in the morning light. With my camera always within arm’s reach, I’m thisclose to rounding up three images for our version of the above.

Am I the crazy cat lady? Probably. But let’s not forget about Scott. He’s been on board with those whole larger-than-life-pet-heads-on-our-wall idea, too.

Has anyone else garnished their halls, shelves, and foyers with oversized pet portraits? If so, consider this your show and tell. We want to see it. And while we have a few ideas for final placement, it just happens to coincide with a built from-scratch entertainment center. That we haven’t started. Hey. I told you we pile it on. And it’s a new year, so bring it.

  • I love those oversized photos – great idea! I’d definitely hang them in my home. I’ll have to give it a shot with my guys. But what I’d love even more is to have large charcoal sketches done of my pets – love the look of charcoal.ReplyCancel

I want to do the same thing but I already have silhouettes of the dogs very prominently displayed in the living room and I think over sized photos would be a little too much. I think they would look great in your house though!ReplyCancel

I love that you posted this. I have one cat, her name is Trinity, and I love her like a child. I’ve been thinking to do something like this too. I already have 1 4×6 photo of her in a gallery. I also want to make a photo album of her growing up. I guess the question is how many can I go before I become the crazy cat lady? :)ReplyCancel

Toby and I have two pictures like that on our living room wall – one of each kid. They’re 30×15 black and white prints and we LOVE them! = )ReplyCancel

You know I’m a crazy cat lady! Except my pet portraits are pint-sized (including the ones from you) so maybe I’m a teensy bit less crazy cat ladyish. :)ReplyCancel

I have two rabbits and a ferret that I’ve been thinking need their own gallery. They’re so hard to photograph though!ReplyCancel

We don’t have any oversized photos of our 3 cats… but it sure is a cute idea! We’ve just got the standard fridge photos and a few small framed ones. What’s the difference if you hang large wedding photos of yourselves vs photos of your pets. Its your house, do what pleases you! :)ReplyCancel

Alichia – will do! Who needs photos of our mugs when the cute ones belong to those four-legged ones?ReplyCancel

  • I think nothing would be cuter than an oversized pet portrait. I love my cat-baby (and I have two human babies as well…)!ReplyCancel

Ah! I just posted about our 4-legged family members’ photos as art yesterday! While they aren’t oversized pics, per se, they’re more than just a photo on a refrigerator.
Please, be my guest! Check ’em out!
