On Turning Two

Holy ships! This virtual home of ours turns 2 today. While we started writing this blog to document all the nit-picky crafty majigs we do around the home (in the name of fun), it never ceases to amaze us when we hear from you. Can we just say how happy you make us?

For whatever reasons that keep you coming back, thank you. Your encouragement, ideas, and comment (and email!) banter have made our years. There’s been ups and downs on the back end (fellow blog buds and DIY lovers alike can surely agree that shizz doesn’t always come up roses), but in the end, your positive reinforcement has made this crazy ride worth riding. Genuinely, we thank you so much. Of course, Jack couldn’t agree more. (Err, well, you know. Whatever, he’s cute.)

And because today’s magic number is two, we’d like to ask you – you guessed it – two favors (oh, look at that). It’d sure make us happy if you’d be willing to divulge.

Tell us at least one thing about your fine self. Or, you know, two things since we’re rollin’ on a theme here. We want to know more about you – what you like to eat, where you like to shop, your favorite color, number, song or band – or your pup’s name and just how cute he is. Do you blog, too? Link up. And hey, where in the world are ya?

And since we’re having Sharefest 2011: Is there anything you’ve been wondering about us? Just ask. We’ll be back in a new post (say, next week) with overly wordy answers and most likely divulge TMI. After all, we’re asking the same of you.

PS… Dare we link back to the post that started it all?

What do I like to eat? I like to eat, period. But if I had to choose… I’d say chocolate, cheese, tuna, cherries, lasagna. (Not necessarily in that order!)
Where do I shop? If I lived in the US I’d be all over Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, and Abercrombie and Fitch. But since I’m not, I love Zara Home!
My favorite color? Blue, or gray. It depends.
Do I blog? Yes! about cooking, DIY-ing, and traveling: http://www.alittlebiteofeverything.com
Where am I? In Bilbao, SpainReplyCancel

  • kim6.14.11 - 10:29 AM

    I’d like to know…

How did you and Scott meet?
What is your absolute favorite renovation you’ve done in your home?
What is your favorite breakfast food?

    And…

    Hmmmmmm….

What do you order from Starbucks?

    That’s all. For now… :)ReplyCancel

  • Um, I’m a neat freak, but not a clean freak and it bugs the crap out of me when a lights with two switches are left in the ‘on’ position. And, my favorite band is Bon Jovi, I’m not much of a new music fan. Yep, I’m already a 50 year old.

I’d love to know how you and Scott met and why you decided on Chicago.

Happy two years!! Please keep up the good work!ReplyCancel

  • Happy BlogDay!!! I was trying to remember how I even found this fab place and I remember I came across THE MOST adorable photo of your pup looking at himself framed and ready to hang in the hallway was it? Anyway- That was it. I was hooked!

Me? I have a major weakness for dogs so I gravitate to like minded folk. I have a blog ~ http://sunsetsandswimmingpools.blogspot.com/ which showcases my life in Arizona. I’m originally from Southern California so it’s kinda weird being a desert girl now and I like to write about all that. The hood, our home, our pups, blah-blah. What else? I’m an Aries, can be kinda moody, love Mexican food, Bill Maher and Woody Allen movies.

I’d like to know how you and honey met. Spill it!ReplyCancel

  • Kim6.14.11 - 10:40 AM

Wow, lots of meeting Scott questions! There are TWO sides to that story, mwahaha! Will add it to the list.

I love hearing about you guys, too! Keep it coming!ReplyCancel

  • Heather6.14.11 - 12:15 PM

I’ll pretty much eat burgers or sushi for any meal of the day. I blog at http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com and I love reading about other people who are diving into home ownership/improvement.

How do you decide on window coverings? I have the hardest time choosing them and you two do a really nice job. :)ReplyCancel

  • Rachel6.14.11 - 12:34 PM

    Happy Blog Birthday!

I can’t really remembered how I stumbled upon your blog either, but I’ve been hooked ever since because I simply love y’all’s aesthetic (LOVE color!), all the helpful home tips, DIY projects, and the fab pics of your sweet pets.

My husband and I love animals. Right now, we have a cat named Smoky (who y’all are doing a pet portrait of! Whoop!) and next month, we’re getting a dog—not sure what kind yet, but we’ll definitely be getting one from a shelter or rescue organization. I do have a blog (www.rachelquinlivan.wordpress.com). It’s basically a place where I share my sketches and the work I do as an illustrator—it’s not my 9-to-5, but a side biz—and also my own home projects and such.

I’m curious, y’all have some fantastic art in your home, what are your favorite resources for finding such great pieces? Also, how do y’all keep your place looking so tidy with three pets?!ReplyCancel

    • Kim6.14.11 - 1:41 PM

Ooh, all great questions… Adding to our list.

Rachel, we’ll be addressing the pet issue early next week regardless. Keep an eye out!ReplyCancel

  • Jen @ Bungalov6.14.11 - 2:00 PM

Happy blogiversary! Can’t wait til I am two. My blog is Bungalov at http://www.chicagobungalov.com and I also share stories of my home and life. :) Come on by and enter for my Starbucks contest!

Some tib dits about me. Found your blog while reading another blogger who loved you. I also am from Chicago (born and raised) and enjoy reading stories from another local. I’m thirty-something and a mom of a very spunky 3 year old girl. I have a dog, a little silky terrier, who is a crazy little thing but the best.

What is your favorite thing to do in Chi-town and where do you just have to go out to eat to?

Look forward to reading the answers to all the great ?’s!ReplyCancel

  • Lisa6.14.11 - 3:13 PM

I like to eat sushi and Mexican food. I like to eat just about anything, really, as long as it is cooked by someone else. And I just had my one-year blogiversary: http://www.trappedinnorthjersey.blogspot.com.

If you guys could buy one piece of furniture without any cost restrictions, what would it be?ReplyCancel

  • Tamara6.14.11 - 3:37 PM

I’m with the others who said they like to eat, period! AMEN! Though right now I am having a craving for red grapes and cottage cheese. And for lunch I had a quesadilla with cheese, corn and caramelized onion, with pickles! (Now, that was only less than two hours ago so how can I be craving something else already?!)

I blog (rather too infrequently, darn it) over at http://www.delishmag.com, and I’m also the editor of that fine magazine. Over the next month we’re going to be rolling out a new issue of the mag as well as a brand new web site, so I’ll be blogging more regularly. We’ll also be getting into more home stuff! I think I am going to paint an outdoor tablecloth like yours and will give all the credit to you when I post about it!

Just wanted to say I love your writing, projects, humor and pup!! Ours is a three year old black lab mix. We also have a little boy who is almost 10 months old…both keep us very very busy! (We live in North Vancouver, BC.)

Question: what are YOUR favorite web sites and publications, and where do you get your ideas from?ReplyCancel

  • michelle6.14.11 - 5:35 PM

    Happy Blog Birthday!! Very exciting!

I’m Michelle from Iowa and I blog over at http://www.decorandthedog.blogspot.com. I’m in love with my Wire Fox Terrier. He’s the love of my life…my husband is a close second. :P I like to make our house pretty on a budget. I also like to read lots (blogs, books, newspapers), go thrifting, walk the dog, etc.

Questions for you…if you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Who would watch the pets or would they go with? If money was no object, what is one thing you would do to you would do to your place/purchase today?ReplyCancel

    • Kim6.14.11 - 6:21 PM

Michelle, dang, those are tough! But we can’t wait to answer.ReplyCancel

  • Dave6.14.11 - 7:38 PM

    Kim,
I live in Cincinnati. I love family, Skyline Chili, U.C. Bearcats, cycling, fishing, hiking, canoeing with your mother-in-law and teasing you!
We look forward to all your posts. You have some of the most interesting readers. We have checked out all of their blogs.
    Keep up the good work.
    P. S. One more thing, I am standing on my head while I am typing this note to you. Those heart shaped desserts you made for the B-Day boy were awesome. We enjoyed seeing all the things you have been blogging about. We are sorry that Pete, Cully and some other guy moved all your stuff around.ReplyCancel

  • Kim6.14.11 - 7:44 PM

Dave, you think you’re so funny! I kept noticing things throughout the night – don’t think you can pull a fast one on me!

    Standing on your head? Why?ReplyCancel

  • Monika6.14.11 - 8:21 PM

Have loved following you this past year (I’m somewhat new to the blog thing and true to my lifelong pattern, a bit slow in getting on board with these kinds of things) but have been inspired and motivated by your posts. Keep ’em coming and continued success for many more years! As for “share-fest” for the record, I’m a vegetarian. :-)

P.S. Happy belated birthday to your husband. Many happy returns you sweet young things!ReplyCancel

  • Susan @ Jubilee Furniture6.15.11 - 8:57 AM

Happy birthday/anniversary! I never quite know which it is! Interestingly, I started the Jubilee Furniture blog (www.jubileefurniture.blogspot.com) just ten days before you started Yellow Brick Home! Of course, my blog is for work (showcasing furniture which has been donated and for sale in the store) and not nearly as creative, interesting and cool as yours! Seriously. No need to throw token compliments my way, Kim! :-)

I’ve been thinking what questions I would like to ask you two and have come up with the following:

1.) What’s your favorite book and why? (one of mine is “Mountains Beyond Mountains: healing the world, the quest of Dr. Paul Farmer” it will have you questioning whether the “greatest good for the greatest number of people” is really a good idea)
2.) Would you like to have two-legged children some day? (I have two – my daughter, Abby, is 22 and my son, Jack is 20 – both amazing kids who I love dearly. It was four years ago that my four-legged furry daughter, Jenny – passed away and I still tear up over her and am not sure I can ever get another dog)
3.) If you had super hero powers what would they be and why? (I am torn between the ability to fly and being invisible – because either would be fantastic, of course!)
4.) What causes you two to disagree? (finances are often the source of my and my husband’s arguments)
5.) Have you two always loved color?
6.) Have you started any “traditions” since you got married? If so, what are they? (I’ve been married 26 – almost 27 years – and we have many – mostly small things – family meals where my husband cooks – he does most of the cooking – whenever the kids are home; playing telephone pictionary with our kids and friends – the most hilarious game ever; long sunny days doing yard work ending with us sitting on the deck with a glass of wine)

Okay – that’s probably enough for the moment! Can’t wait to read all your answers next week!ReplyCancel

  • Tina6.15.11 - 10:19 PM

Things anyone must know about me:

    1. I am *obsessed* with the movie Empire Records. If I begin to list the reasons why, I might have some people show up, ready to commit me.

    2. I <3 cereal. I think I could live off cereal alone if given the option. And because I'm such a perfectionist, I have a method to making my bowl of cereal and no one else is allowed to fix it for me.

Now, despite the fact that I sound completely crazy, here are my questions:

Are there things or actions that you do that just HAVE to be in a particular order? Like a morning routine that just can't change, etc.

If you could survive on only one type of food or only one thing to eat, what would it be? Italian, Chinese, chicken only, etc.ReplyCancel

    • Kim6.16.11 - 9:44 AM

Ooh, Tina, I know exactly how I’ll answer those. Scott’s another story though!

Also, I am obsessed with Empire Records, too. I swear that – by fate – I look at the clock every day at 1:37. I don’t know why I do it, but OF COURSE I think of think of that movie!ReplyCancel

  • Rachel @ I'm Loving Today6.16.11 - 4:19 PM

Happy 2nd birthday! :) I’m a fellow DIYer, just up the road in Milwaukee, working on putting my own little home together and your blog is definitely one of my ultimate go-tos for inspiration!

I’d love to know where you look daily for inspiration? With the news of Readymade Magazine shutting down today, I’m thinking we’ll all be in mourning for losing such a fantastic source.ReplyCancel

  • Kim6.16.11 - 4:33 PM

Rachel, I didn’t hear this news about ReadyMade! Oh, our hearts will hurt for a LONG time on that one.ReplyCancel

  • Cait @ Hernando House6.22.11 - 4:05 PM

I swear I commented here last week. (Maybe I never clicked “Post Comment”?) Oh well, better late than never, right?

I’m a graphic designer, DIYer and blogger in North Florida. My husband and I have two dogs, Dots & Freckles, who are super cute. I love shopping at West Elm, Anthro, PB, Z Gallerie, Crate and Barrel and CB2 (but mostly we are on a Target & Ikea kind of budget). We both love taking bike rides and going to the beach in our CJ-7, but we hardly have time for either recently (and we might have to sell the CJ. Major sad face.) As for food, I mostly love eating food in general, especially comfort food. More specifically: cream cheese eggrolls, crab rangoon, frozen yogurt, potato chips, french fries, PASTA (yes that deserves all caps), and lately I’m been on a spinach&ricotta kick. Which leads to spinach lasagna rolls, stuffed shells, manicotti, and spinach enchiladas.

I don’t have a question, but I’ve enjoyed the responses so far. :)

PS- I second Amanda about the light switches.ReplyCancel

  • Kim6.22.11 - 4:40 PM

Cait, I loved your better-late-than-never comment! I, too, am obsessed with pasta, and any pasta + spinach is a MUST. Comfort foods and me are besties.ReplyCancel

  • Yay for two years! I feel like our blogs have grown up together in a way (well, mine is a bit developmentally challenged at the moment). I hope to continue reading for many more years- you really do have a first-rate blog. I can always count on YBH for amazing pictures, unique design inspiration, and great writing.
