My (Once Weekly) New Commute

Although I do sport the occasional red lipstick to work out of our home studio (my simple way of feeling “dressed up” for a day at the office!), I’m also getting the feeling that Jack is no longer engaged in my conversations. After all, how many times can I ask him to turn up this song! It’s my favorite! – before I realize it’s never going to happen. (Rather, a bored huff and a bed re-nestling takes place on his part.)

So, to thwart the all-alone-blues that can sometimes happen when working from home – because even the romantic ideas of pajamas and unwashed hair can become tiresome – I’ve begun working alongside my friend, Jess, once a week on Tuesdays. And you know what? It’s so nice to ask a question aloud and get an answer. It’s refreshing to read a funny quip on Facebook and share the silliness; it’s beyond exciting to “go to lunch” with a co-worker, together, and maybe linger a little too long while we’re out.

Bonus, she’s got this fuzzy guy to keep my pet-fix in check:

While there are some co-op working options here in Chicago (I’ve seen this one before, but never committed to the rental fees), we like to think we’ve got a good thing going on – home-working alongside a friend. Cohabitation (from 9-5 anyway). For free.

For now, I’ve been trekking to Jess’ home, which I enthusiastically volunteered for. (Really!) I take my morning coffee to go, I ride the bus, and I head home at the end of a productive day to meet my man for dinner. Those once mundane tasks feel fun again! But once we get our ducks in a row on a new home with space – fingers crossed(!) – we’ll switch off. Perhaps we’ll even sprinkle a few more into our crew, too.

As for my usual partner in crime, Jack? Well, he’s never been more excited to see me when I walk through that door. Mom, you’re hooome! Boy, there is so much I’ve gotta tell you. (Or maybe he just missed his daily office cupcake?)

As someone who is stuck in an actual office 8-5 during the week (what a drag). I can see how being home alone all day could get boring. Dogs just don’t seem to have the same caliber of water cooler and break room talk as us humans!I’ve also heard working out of a coffee shop is a good way to get some human interaction for the work-from-home-ers.ReplyCancel

Sam, I have painstakingly been searching for the right coffee shop to work from – but apparently, I’m being too picky! In the end, my studio is the coziest, but Jess’ home is also fun and inviting. It’s a perfect balance!ReplyCancel

I get this, my how I get this! My almost 3rd year (come end of July) as a stay at home mom has me finally feeling certifiably crazy! Could be the extra kid too. ;) My mom friends are few and far btwn. here, and I’m itching to move to Cbus closer to family finally! And wow, I can’t wait for Leo to go to preschool and actually miss me for once. I remember missing my mom while at preschool. Fun times. haha! :)ReplyCancel

Jillian, I’m so happy you and I cut our ties at almost the exact same time – we’ve been able to share the ups and downs over the years! I wouldn’t trade this job for anything, but it’s SO good to get some human interaction every now and then.ReplyCancel

I’m a 9-5’er at an office and I wish I had some skill that would allow me to work from home. I never thought that it would be mundane after awhile! This is such a good way to get some interaction!ReplyCancel

As someone who just passed the 2 year mark of working from home, I have yet to hit the part where it becomes boring. When I do go into the office (about 15 times a year) I never get anything done because I’m constantly being interrupted. Also, the work clothes are so uncomfortable. :-)ReplyCancel

Casacaudill, yes, I really have to remember how little I used to actually get done in my 9-5s… so many interruptions! And you’re right about the work clothes. We’re Casual Friday everyday around here!ReplyCancel

That’s such a good solution! I would love to work from home (I’m an 8-6’er at the office), but haven’t had an opportunity that makes that possible. I can see how it might get lonely, so I’m glad you and Jess are co-working!ReplyCancel

What a great idea! My friends that work for themselves (mostly photographers) have definitely found doing things to switch it up and get out among people is crucial. And what a cute fuzzball to hang out with!ReplyCancel

Sounds fun working with a friend. That puppy face would seal the deal for me! So cute!ReplyCancel
