Moving Day + House Guests

After years of proclaiming that we wouldn’t live in Chicago, say, past the age of 30, we’ve found ourselves heading into Moving Day weekend. Here, in Chicago, in our thirties.

If you’ve been with us for a while, you’ve seen us city hop as part of our yearly anniversary tradition, in the hopes that we would find the next great town for us, Jack and the girls. We were absolutely convinced that we’d head west (or east… or south), but when it really came down to it, we finally realized that we got it right on the first try. Chicago, you are home!

(You know this already – broken record rant, over.)

Now, as we’re surrounded in boxes and bins at the Little Guy, shuttling big, gaudy gold mirrors to the house and wiping off the demolition dust from our cheeks, we’re feeling… well, emotional. Overwhelmed! Excited and anxious and ten other feelings at once. For as long as Scott and I have been together, we’ve shared a dream for fixing up an old home, restoring its lost beauty and having our 80s montage moments. Even still, as we signed our names at the closing table and threw the first sledgehammer through a 100-year-old wall, it’s suddenly all very real. Good real.

On Monday morning, we’ll be waking up in our same bed, but under a different roof.

All this to say that documenting our journey wouldn’t be as fun and rewarding without the support of our close friends and the blogging community (living all over the world!). While Scott and I needed time to see that home was right here all along, it finally became clear: Home is where you are. And as much as we love Chicago, we know that our friends around the country love their surroundings for equal reasons.

So, we asked them to share their love of home with you.

Next week, we’ll be unpacking, working with contractors and easing the fuzzy kids into their new surroundings. To help with this transition, we’ve rounded up a fun crew of personal friends and fellow bloggers to keep our virtual home cozy, and for one week, they’ll be sharing what makes them love where they live (with 2 posts a day!).

We encourage you to give our house guests a warm welcome, and we’ll be back with a lot more progress the following week! (And until then, every time you pass a hardware store, think of us.)

I’m not going to lie, I got a little teary eyed reading that. It is an amazing feeling to move to a place and to have it feel like home, straight away, no question. I moved to Long Beach for college, and 12 years later (there were 3 years in there when I moved away) it is the place where I feel not just home but a sense of community and belonging.
Congratulations, and good luck with the move!!!ReplyCancel

Congratulations times a million! Also, good for you for taking a blogging break! Enjoy the moving and settling-in period as much as you can (given that it’s MOVING), and good luck with all the stuff to do. By the way, I would love to promise to think of you guys when I pass a hardware store, but I’m usually too busy going inside the store and exploding my brain with too many ideas…ReplyCancel
