The Design Tool That Shaped Our Teeny Nursery

This post is in partnership with Modsy. Use promo code YBH20 for 20% off a Modsy design package!

Our biggest challenge when coming up with a design, a feel, a mood for our nursery was this question on repeat: Will it fit? The room is a typical size for a Chicago home of its old age; coming in at barely 7′ wide, it’s shaped as a long, skinny rectangle. We poked fun of the size in this Scary Room video (my, how far it has come from being called ‘scary’!), and although we’ve grown accustomed to the challenge of these narrow little rooms (the guest room comes to mind), we were hesitant to start bringing in any furniture until we triple checked the measurements and taped out the dimensions.

It was around that same time that Modsy reached out to us about trying their design services, to which we couldn’t say yes! fast enough. A few months ago, we even shared the three designs we were toying with, displayed through 3D renderings that had us doing a double take – they looked so real! To get us to that point, I sent them photos of the empty room with my phone (although they’ll absolutely accept photos of a fully furnished room, too!), and I provided feedback on what we were looking for. Serene, I said. Minimal. I shared links to products we were considering and provided input on furniture arrangement, and a few days later, the designs showed up in my inbox!

The best part of the service was being able to see everything to scale in the room. The sleek, small(ish) Urban Rocker we had our eye on turned out to be the Goldilocks of chairs for the skinny space, which had us feeling much more confident in the investment. Seeing it paired with the wool ottoman we already owned, the bubble side table we loved and the pom pom curtains we were considering sealed the deal on every level. It was a game changer!

We completed the nursery last week, and I wanted to share a big sneak peek into how Modsy helped to shape our teeny nursery. (And psst, a full, detailed reveal is in the works!)  The first photo below is a Modsy rendering that included all of our tweaks and changes along the way, followed by a photo of the actual nursery:

A question we’ve heard quite a bit since first sharing our Modsy designs is this: Can they incorporate furniture I already own? The short answer? Yup. Although Modsy has a product catalog of items from 100+ favorite retailers (think: all the usual suspects, such as West Elm, CB2, Minted and Rejuvenation), they’re also able to whip up renderings of your existing furniture and vintage treasures for a small fee per item. For example, here’s the other side of the room, which includes the antique mirror we’ve been hoarding for this very special space. I emailed my designer the dimensions of the mirror, sent a photo, and they were able to create a replica for the renderings!

We love keeping the door to the nursery wide open. The sweet glimpse of the room, below, has us smiling every time we pass by, and we encourage Jack and CC to nap on the rug and give the rocker, books and toys a good sniff. We want them to feel comfortable, too, rather than keeping the space a mystery.

If you’re looking to spruce up or completely overhaul a space in this new year, we encourage you to consider Modsy. Design packages start at $69, and as you can see, they’re so much more than the room planners we’ve seen before. Packages include unlimited design revisions, and you’re also given the opportunity to chat one on one with a style advisor – a truly fun experience that gives you the opportunity to have them rearrange items on the spot. Use promo code YBH20 for 20% off your first design package, and let us know how it goes!

PS… The full nursery reveal is coming soon!

Kim – the room is lovely! What a sweet space to welcome your little one into the world. I also noticed that you have “On the Night You Were Born” on the bookshelf – I still can’t make it through reading that one to my daughter without shedding a few tears :)ReplyCancel

Aw, love hearing that! We’re starting our book collection from scratch (aside from a few of our childhood favorites), so we’re happy to take more recommendations!ReplyCancel

HI! I used Modsy to redesign my dining room into a study/office and their renderings were amazing and soooo incredibly helpful. We’re (slowly) implementing one of the designs (we bought the two design package) and it’s going to look great (so much better than if I had designed it on my own!!) Can’t wait to meet your newest family member!ReplyCancel

Hello! I came across your blog looking for real-life photos of the C&B Nola rug. The nursery is gorgeous! I’m wondering how the rug is holding up now that you’ve had it awhile? I’m thinking of making the splurge and your notes about wool rugs and how well they hold up are helping me! :) ReplyCancel

We love it and would purchase again in a heartbeat! It’s already seen a few messes and the wool is so durable.ReplyCancel
