Mixing Metals In the Bathroom

When we first started thinking about the finishes we’d like in our bathroom, we weren’t always on the same page. Scott is a big fan of polished chrome; as he’s said before, that shiny finish is like a pair of your favorite blue jeans – always in style. While I agree, it’s no secret that I love touches of gold and brass throughout the home! But as we began narrowing down our favorite faucets and shower head, I quickly crossed over to his side. Polished chrome is peppered throughout the entire bathroom, but when it came time to add hardware and lighting, we both agreed that this was our chance to play.

We teamed up with Rejuvenation – one of our very favorite places on the web (and in-person, too!) – and as we added drawer pulls and sconces, we watched as our bathroom went from very, very white to warm, inviting. We’ve always been big fans of mixing metals, and so we really went for it and layered it all in! Brass in satin and polished finishes, almost-black oil rubbed bronze and shiny chrome all share a starring role in this room.

We upped our vanity game by choosing walnut drawer fronts to this sink cabinet, but adding these 18″ Larkin drawer pulls set it all off. (Drilling into that walnut was scary, but it was worth every bead of sweat!) Along the side, we installed a beautiful, brassy toilet paper holder – really, how pretty is she?

bath-rejuvenation-05

I couldn’t shake the idea of adding a hit of shiny brass to the ceiling, which is really only visible if you’re much, much taller than me or if you’re standing in the shower. This is the semi-flush version of the Eastmoreland pendant from our kitchen, and it’s every bit as sweet. The brass base feels a little like a secret; I was only able to get this shot by standing on a step stool inside the tub (truth), but when you’re down low, it feels fresh and simple.

But! These sconces! We fell in love with the Pittock sconce moons ago, and we were only paralyzed by the decision to go single (times two) or double (times one). In the end, you can see we chose the single sconce, and each one hangs directly above our faucets. The oil rubbed bronze finish reads almost like a deep, rich black, which we chose to bring the black of our floors upwards.

Throughout the room, we’ve added hunky, brassy hooks that’ll hold our hand and bath towels, and below, you might remember the smaller Larkin pull on our skinny storage solution that mimics the vanity, too.

Adding brass accents to a typically steamy room will surely add a patina over time, but we personally really, really love that. The most used pulls on our DIY kitchen island have developed well-worn areas, and it adds so much character! (This house is an almost 130-year-old lady after all!) Up next? A shower curtain, hanging our mirror, choosing art and organizing all the storage! The room hasn’t seen much use aside from a few doggie baths, but we’re almost there. So close.

To celebrate all the checked-off items on our bathroom to-do list, Rejuvenation wants to spread the brassy, chrome and oil rubbed goodness to you, too. And so together with Rejuvenation, we’ll be giving away $250 towards anything in their store! Using the Rafflecopter widget below, enter as many ways as you’d like. This giveaway is eligible for those located in the United States or Canada and runs through Friday, March 18th until 5pm CST. The winner will be announced within this post and contacted directly. Good luck and happy entering!

  • Meg3.15.16 - 7:50 AM

Love the mix of finishes and the beautifully clean and white walls. Are those semihandmade fronts on your sink? I love how perfectly the grain matches across the drawers. Aw heck, I love the whole darn room.

Question: I’ve been thinking about Hood Pendants in Oil-Rubbed Bronze for a refresh over my dining room table. It is really reading matte black in your pictures; can you tell in person that it is a metallic vs an enamel finish?ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.15.16 - 9:46 AM

Hi Meg, great question! First, we love our Hood pendant in the dining room. It’s one of those classic but statement lighting pieces that ALWAYS gets comments from friends and family when they’re over. Ours is the aged brass finish, but by now, we’ve added a few ORB pendants to the home! We are always amazed at how well made they are. From our experience, Rejuvenation lighting is heavy and sturdy. (These sconces have an amazing weight to them. They feel and look so substantial!) The ORB really does read as a matte black (no reddish undertones), but there’s a great deal of dimension to the ORB. I hope that helps to answer your question – it’s our favorite ORB we’ve seen. We’re not huge fans of all that red coming through, and this doesn’t have that.ReplyCancel

    • Emily3.15.16 - 10:22 AM

      Hi Meg,
I just wanted to add my 2 cents as my husband and I just installed Rejuvenation’s Hood pendant in our place. The fixture itself is gorgeous and well worth the investment, in my opinion, but the finish (in the aged brass finish anyway) is very thinly applied and scratches very easily. Our pendant’s finish suffered some nicks during the shipping and installation process. I have no idea if you’ll have the same experience with the oil-rubbed bronze finish (I hope not!) but just a heads up, the Hood is gorgeous but may require kid gloves during installation.ReplyCancel

      • Kim3.15.16 - 11:01 AM

Thank you for chiming in, Emily! I do think that wearing cloth gloves during the install of any of these brass products is necessary.ReplyCancel

        • Meg3.15.16 - 2:12 PM

Thanks for the tips/info!! Since I’ve got some experienced Hood owners here and apparently I’m fine with hijacking the thread, how high above your table did you hang your fixture?ReplyCancel

          • Kim3.15.16 - 2:17 PM

Standard height above a table should hover around 3′ for a typical 8′ ceiling, but because we picked ours up in clearance, we didn’t get to choose the length of the rod. Our ceilings are almost 10′ high, and the Hood hangs about 44″ or so above the table. I was worried it would look too high, but we actually love it!

  • Leigh Drury3.15.16 - 8:04 AM

The Abelard would look great over our dining table. I have a need for multiple fixtures, the decision would be a difficult one!ReplyCancel

  • Rebecca3.15.16 - 8:16 AM

Love this idea of mixing metals!ReplyCancel

  • Laura @ Rather Square3.15.16 - 8:16 AM

I love those sconces! Will you be showing photos of the entire room at some point?ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.15.16 - 9:40 AM

Yes!! As soon as we finish it up. We’re hanging some art, refinishing a mirror and deciding on a shower curtain. It’s those little things that seem to hold up the process the longest!ReplyCancel

  • Kelly Schumacher3.15.16 - 8:25 AM

I love the rejuvenation crystal knobs. I wish they had a matte black finish, although the pull rubbed bronze may be close enough.ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.15.16 - 9:39 AM

The ORB finish is so, so pretty, Kelly! It looks like matte black (no reddish undertones), and the products have a great weight to them.ReplyCancel

  • Alex3.15.16 - 8:28 AM

Those Larkin pulls look awesome on the walnut doors, and I love the TP holder!ReplyCancel

  • Meredith3.15.16 - 8:32 AM

Can you tell us what you mean when you say you have teamed up with partners? Are the pieces donated to you or given at a discount? It may help your avid readers (like myself!) Better understand why I can’t afford to do these things to my living space.

Would you consider putting a budget of each of your room renovations in your blog posts?ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.15.16 - 9:54 AM

Absolutely, Meredith! Every partnership is a little different, but in this case, Rejuvenation has donated the product to our renovation. We were customers years ago, and through blogging, they’ve become some of our biggest supporters and strongest collaborators. They’re a great team, and we love that we get to share them with you! One of our favorite things about them is that their pieces are classics – they’ll last for the long haul. A $250 schoolhouse pendant will never go out of style, so you don’t need to swap things out in a couple years to stay ‘on trend.’ They’re truly beautiful pieces.

The reason we rarely do budget breakdowns with a down-to-the-studs renovation is mostly due to contractor costs. Chicago is definitely pricier than most cities when it comes to hired work, and this old house has some obstacles that – hopefully! – some of you would never have to deal with. Budget breakdowns by project are something we have done in the past, however, and we’re happy to continue doing so as we knock things out as we go. :)ReplyCancel

  • Liz3.15.16 - 8:35 AM

I would love to update the builder basic hardware we have in our house! This would be fantastic :)ReplyCancel

  • Heidi3.15.16 - 9:03 AM

  • Sarah In Indiana3.15.16 - 9:15 AM

I totally fell in love with that toilet paper holder. I think the plowed chrome is the one for me, though. And I’m in serious need of a wall sconce, but choosing is so difficult! I like the Mist a lot…ReplyCancel

  • Ariella3.15.16 - 9:24 AM

I love the mixed metal look, especially the brass. Unfortunately my husband is a strict non-metal-mixer. But sometimes I can sneak in accents here and there in the form of pillows or other trinkets.

As for what we’d use the $250 for? We have a foyer that could really, really use a new light (it’s a bare bulb right now, ugh) and I’ve been hesitating to buy because of expense. Here’s hoping!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.15.16 - 9:38 AM

Gorgeous bathroom! I am head over heels for your mixed metals look and I’m especially in love with the drawer pulls you’ve chosen.

What WOULDN’T I buy with a $250 Rejuvenation gift card??? I love everything they sell. My first spending priority, given $250, would be to replace the boring builder grade hardware in our kitchen.ReplyCancel

I am really loving the Rejuvenation’s Skyline Rug! Your house is coming along great. We just finished a similar process on our house, redoing room by room and gutting a bathroom, and it’s so stressful and time consuming but SO WORTH IT in the end!ReplyCancel

  • Kristy H3.15.16 - 12:28 PM

    Gorgeous!
I especially love the cabinet pulls! I also love HOW you chose to mix the metals. I agree that the shiny chrome is classic so it makes a lot of sense to have your fixtures in that finish as they are much harder to change later, while the pulls and hooks are easy to keep “on trend” or just change out for fun at some point.ReplyCancel

  • Ashley Goldman3.15.16 - 1:21 PM

I mixed metals in my bathroom remodel. We have chrome plumbing fixtures, and chrome legs on the pedestal sink. But the cabinet hardware is (nearly black) ORB, the window hinges are a matte brass, the vintage lighting has a dark brass petina. I love the combination.

If I were stranded on a desert island and could only funish it with one company, it would be Rejuvenation. It’s hard to pick any one thing that I have my heart set on, but this Cedar & Moss Pendant light sure pleases the eyes! http://www.rejuvenation.com/catalog/products/cedar-moss-pendant-8-inReplyCancel

  • Jocelyne3.15.16 - 1:23 PM

I have several Rejuvenation fixtures in my new home and really do like them. I still swoon over the light in my office. I made the mistake of going with in stock hardware with my custom cabinetry last year, thinking I could upgrade them after to stuff from Rejuvenation or Schoolhouse Electric or someplace like that, only to find that they are all 3.75″ centre to centre….and the selection online for that size is pretty sparse. I would love if companies started carrying more sizes beyond the standard 3″, 4″, etc sizes. Live and learn. I should have measured at the time but it was just so many decisions at once so that one got away from me.ReplyCancel

  • Dani @ Danielle and Co.3.15.16 - 1:30 PM

I dream of a day when my bathroom will look like this. So much goodness. <3ReplyCancel

  • Mandi3.16.16 - 3:29 PM

What a great look in your bath! And whoo-hoo, RH giveaway :-D!!ReplyCancel

  • Ro osborn3.16.16 - 5:49 PM

Oh I can’t wait to see the finished bath. And laundry room and bedroom for that matter.

I have no light in my living room right now besides a lamp and I think the Haleigh wire dome pendant would look good over my fireplace mantle. The ceilings are vaulted so the flexible cord is a must and the ceilings are 20′ high making lighting in there very tricky.ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.16.16 - 5:51 PM

The Haleigh is one of our FAVORITES. It’s stunning in every single color/finish!ReplyCancel

  • Cindy metcho3.16.16 - 5:54 PM

Lovely. The finished bathroom is going to look killer!

I would love to own the momo single sconce.ReplyCancel

  • Anna3.16.16 - 7:34 PM

Those brass drawer tho…dayum! They make my heart sing! You mixed the metals to the max!ReplyCancel

  • Marnie3.16.16 - 7:52 PM

I love the cabinet/door combo! For some reason the IKEA link isn’t working? Anyway, I’m hoping to win so I could get that beautiful blue rug for my living room…ReplyCancel

  • Nikki3.16.16 - 9:16 PM

Our kitchen is undergoing an update and I have my eye on either the simple iron shelf brackets or the hairpin ones. Too many great choices!!ReplyCancel

  • Christine3.16.16 - 11:07 PM

    Love the mixed metals!ReplyCancel

  • Alexis Payne3.17.16 - 1:20 AM

I always worry about mixing metals, but this is so gorgeous! The multi wall hooks and the toilet paper roll holder have me green with envy.
What art are you thinking for the space? Do you have to use any special framing to protect the art?ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.17.16 - 8:24 AM

Hi Alexis! So far, we’ve hung our renovation photo, and we have another couple of prints in waiting. :) Nothing special to protect, honestly. We’ve always just hung art protected with glass in our bathrooms over the years, and we haven’t had any issues. It’s always nice to pretty up a bathroom space with art and photos!ReplyCancel

  • Mary G3.17.16 - 8:04 AM

WOW! Your renovations continue to inspire me! These brass fixtures from Rejuvenation are SO pretty. I am in the process of gutting my own bathroom right now and starting fresh. My house was built in 1920 and is quite the project :)

I would love to dress up the new room with some of my own beautiful brass accents.ReplyCancel

  • jillian3.17.16 - 2:00 PM

I’m not sure I could pick one thing that I love. We just moved into a new home, and are slowly updating the fixture to our style. I’d probably start with these for our boys’ bathroom!

I am in love with their lighting! It looks so nice in your old home. Although we’re in need of some bathroom cabinet hardware too, so that probably tops my list at the moment. Who knew drawer pulls were so hard to agree on?!?!ReplyCancel

I’ve been looking and looking for brass fixtures. How did I not come across that brass TP holder?! Love it.ReplyCancel

  • Amy3.18.16 - 10:14 AM

We have a bathroom that I have (thus far) refused to sink any money into *except* for paint. You know when you have those rooms (okay like your bedroom up until recently) that you KNOW you’ll gut one day so why spend any effort and time on it until that day? That’s how I justified leaving the bathroom fixtures but I can’t take the shiny chrome any longer. Plus I can reuse them if we do gut that bathroom one day… Right?ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.18.16 - 10:17 AM

Oh, I hear you! When a room feels like it’s in such disrepair, it doesn’t make too much sense to us to spend much money to make it ‘just okay.’ We’d rather save for the overhaul!ReplyCancel

  • Susan3.18.16 - 1:54 PM

Oh, I so need a new dining room light fixture! I really adore yours, and those bathroom sconces… love!

    Thanks for the give-away.ReplyCancel

  • Hira3.19.16 - 12:33 PM

Could you do a post on the installation of the Ikea vanity? Hoping to use it in my bathroom reno so would be great to see how you installed it!!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.21.16 - 10:16 AM

Hi Hira, I didn’t take any photos during the install, but we literally just followed the instructions to wall mount the vanity!ReplyCancel
