Lucy’s Room Color Reveal!

Lucy’s bedroom is PURPLE! We’re sharing how we decided on the perfect shade to suit her personality: Mellow Mauve (1004-7C) from Valspar.

Lucy’s room is PURPLE! My neutral-loving heart is already finding this space to be creatively challenging, and I mean that in the very best way. The more Lucy requests – pink! purple! shiny! – the more I push myself to bring her ideas to life in an attractive, attainable way, and it has been so much fun. You can see a rough outline of Lucy’s big girl plans here, and painting her room purple is the first step of many more to come. We can’t wait to take you along, so let’s get started!

This post is in partnership with Valspar, a paint brand that believes everyone should love where they live. Valspar is available at Lowe’s – either in-store or through curbside pickup! Find your perfect color at Valspar.com.

Choosing the Right Purple

Where do we start when choosing the perfect purple? For Lucy, this question was an easy one. As I held up dozens of Valspar paint chips on the wall, Lucy was quick to nix any that she deemed as ‘gray.’ Or in her words, That one is so boring, mom. One evening, while reading this unicorn bedtime story, Lucy squealed as she pointed to the book liner and said, This! This is the color I want! It was a mid-tone purple-pink that was neither too bright, and definitely not boring.

Scott and I held the book up to several paint chips, which we ordered for free on Valspar’s website, and Valspar’s Mellow Mauve (1004-7C) was near identical and beautiful! Do I like purple now? Yes, I think I might.

Valspar Reserve® Interior Paint and Primer is our go-to for the bulk of our paint projects! We turn to Valspar Reserve® again and again for rich color, durability and awesome coverage. It’s also scrubbable and fade-resistant, which is a non-negotiable in a kid’s room. We purchased ours from Lowe’s in an eggshell finish, which provides us ultimate wipeability in the case that Lucy gets extra creative with her colored pencils and glitter glue (because, hey, it’s happened before!)

Feeling Mellow Mauve

And the verdict is… we love it! Well, we love it now. Going purple was an initial shock to my system, and as the paint went on, I couldn’t help but wonder, did I go TOO bold? But when the last stripe of white was covered by the Mellow Mauve (including the ceiling!), Lucy’s reaction changed my mind completely. She loved it. I loved it. We all love it!

Her room is still in the very early stages, but I couldn’t help myself from adding a few new pillows and accessories to her convertible crib. Her new bed won’t arrive for another couple of months, but seeing the crushed velvet pillow and starry sheets helped me to see the direction we were heading. It’s official: Lucy’s very purple, very unicorn-y room is well underway!

Should We Paint the Trim?

Perhaps the biggest dilemma I had after choosing the perfect purple was deciding whether or not we wanted to paint the trim the same color in a different sheen. I love the look of millwork painted the same color as the walls, but was it a fit in her room? She has thick window trim, 8″ tall baseboards and a floor-to-ceiling closet (this is how we upgraded builder-basic bi-fold doors), all painted bright white. In the end, Scott and I agreed that there’s something so fresh and sweet about contrasting white trim, and I am so glad we decided to leave it that way. Doesn’t the contrast feel playful, somehow?

Transitioning from a Nursery to a Big Girl Room

The hardest part of this process is helping Lucy through this big transition. She enjoys being a part of every step of the process, but it’s a lot of change for one tiny human! While she enjoys the new, exciting changes, she’s still miffed if we move her bookcase. She’s confused why there are three curtain panels, instead of two. She wants to know if her new bed will be the same size as her crib, because that’s what she’s used to! So if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s being open to her questions and sharing the next steps before we implement them. This has helped her be a big part of the process, which was important to us from the start.

Next up, we’re building a lofted bed! This has been the top item on her wishlist, and our plan is to paint the frame the same color as the walls. The reason for this is two-fold: Painting the frame Mellow Mauve will be less visually distracting in her small room, and it will also give the illusion that her loft bed is truly floating. Of course, we’ll share every step of the process with you!

PS: This is Lucy’s nursery, if you’d like to see how different the room was the day we brought her home from the hospital. But first, someone please pass me a tissue.

I had to chime in because I AM a huge purple fan, and you guys nailed it! Imo the key to a livable purple is to pick a pink-leaning shade rather than blue-leaning, as it’s so much easier to pair colors with. All the millwork in my entire house is a contrast color (almost an exact match for your color actually) and it’s surprisingly flexible. It shines against other berry tones, blush pinks, navy, light blues & aquas, browns, neutrals- even brass, muted oranges, and deep reds. It’s so refreshing to see you guys lean into the uncomfortable, I’m very excited for the reveal! Also thinking of buying those curtains now, so consider me influenced too ;)ReplyCancel

Such awesome feedback, thank you, Sarah! We were really adamant about leaning towards a purple with pink undertones, so this is reassuring to read.ReplyCancel

Purple is my favorite color so I love this! I am still waiting for my 3 year old to let me know she’s ready to paint her walls. She still insists that they be white. ????ReplyCancel

  • Cynthia Gylov1.26.22 - 9:48 AM

The color of the paint should be called Perfect Purple! Looks fab!ReplyCancel

  • Danielle1.26.22 - 10:22 AM

Amazing how well the velvet chair matches the paint color! It looks great! How did you decide to paint the ceiling purple instead of leaving it white like the trim?ReplyCancel

    • Scott1.26.22 - 10:42 AM

It was just a gut feeling! We’re slowly eliminating all of the white ceilings in our home, so this seemed like a logical move. If we hated it, we could always paint it back, right?ReplyCancel

      • Megan Powers1.27.22 - 4:54 AM

It’s so pretty!! Would you still recommend painting the ceiling of they are on the shorter end? 8’?ReplyCancel

        • Scott1.27.22 - 9:28 AM

Lucy’s ceilings are almost 10′ tall with two large windows, so we felt comfortable painting the ceiling. Natural light, paint color and the mood you’re looking to achieve all come into play when deciding. Like we mentioned though, it’s just paint! If you don’t like it, worst case it sets you back a couple of hours to change it back.ReplyCancel

  • Kelly1.26.22 - 1:34 PM

This is gorgeous. You nailed the color and I think the white trim feels like an elegant contrast. ReplyCancel

  • Heather1.26.22 - 2:28 PM

Kim, do you really only need one coat with this paint? Sounds too good to be true…ReplyCancel

    • Kim1.26.22 - 2:39 PM

We ALWAYS do two coats for the richest depth and color.ReplyCancel

  • Ellen1.26.22 - 10:00 PM

Very lovely! Well done! What do you normally do about white outlets and light switches? Just leave them white? If you panted the trim would you still leave them?
    Ta! ReplyCancel

    • Scott1.27.22 - 9:24 AM

We usually leave switches and outlets white, with the exception of very dark walls. Then we’ll often switch them out or black so they don’t stand out so much.ReplyCancel

Honestly – it’s beautiful. Absolutely perfect! Choosing paint is so hard, I’m amazed you got it right the first time around, especially something so far out of your comfort zone!! Bravo!ReplyCancel
