Lucy’s Fall Wardrobe Essentials

Our 3-year-old started preschool this year! These are the essentials that fill her closet.

Our 3-year-old Lucy is growing like a weed, which is magical, but also, please stop, time! She started preschool this year, and as a special treat, I picked up a few fall wardrobe essentials to carry her through the chilly weather months. She couldn’t wait to slip on the shoes, button up her new coat and try on her (very first!) school backpack, and I’m so happy I remembered to snap a photo of each outfit. Let’s have a fashion show!, I said. It was a whirlwind of cotton and squeals, and I squeezed her tight while Scott lined up the next bundle of layers.

We shared our thought process behind buying and graciously accepting cloths for Lucy in this post, and we still stick to those same principles today. We might’ve broken the rule about 3-5 new pieces each season, since this was her very first time going to big kid school(!), but we still rounded out her wardrobe with thrifted pieces, as well as a few hand-me-downs and these gifted camo boots.

In a nutshell, we stick to neutral bottoms, such as denim (always and forever), jewel-toned corduroy and overalls. For tops, almost anything goes! Lucy is a rough and tumble girl, and she is hard on her clothing. She’ll never not have a bruise on her knee and a skinned elbow, but we find so much joy in seeing her enthusiasm, bravery and silliness in all aspects of life. Because of this, we stick to materials that aren’t too precious, and we definitely don’t stick to the girls’ section. She dresses herself every morning, and it’s always interesting to see what she’ll pull together!

    Two things.
    1. Can we petition Target to make that color black jacket in adult sizes?
    2. Please share contact info for Lucy’s favorite salon because I need her hair color NOW.ReplyCancel

      Haha!
      1. I said the same thing!
      2. She goes to Jen Aniston’s person, the wait list is QUITE long.ReplyCancel

It makes me happy to see a blogger who 1) lets their kid dress herself and 2) lets their kid destroy her clothes! I am 100% on the consigned clothes train – I bought a special “first day of preschool” outfit this year too and it had a hole before school even started, ha. And I’m always amazed at friends that still dress their 4, 5, 6 year olds. My girls have had opinions since 18months and I love their style!ReplyCancel

Lucy refuses to let anyone tell her how to dress, so we have to be careful what we fold into her drawers, haha. But we still keep in mind what she’s loving at the moment, and it’s the sweetest to see her pull together outfits!ReplyCancel

I love these! I’m currently stocking our fall/winter wardrobe. I was hoping to reuse things from last year but apparently we skipped right from 2t to 4t so the things I bought in the 3t last year to last two years are worthless ????. I have a very important question though…how functional are the pockets on those cords? My soon to be 3 year old cannot stand her pants not having pockets! ReplyCancel

Oh, interesting! Lucy never uses the pockets, but I’d say you can fit something small in there. They’re great quality and I love the color options! Hopefully they’ll work for you, too.ReplyCancel
