Lucy’s Big Kid Bedroom

This post is sponsored by IKEA. We’re sharing how we gave Lucy’s bedroom a mini refresh for the big girl she’s become!

Earlier this year, we went into Lucy’s room to get her up from her nap, only to find her on the floor surrounded by her favorite books. She was so startled to see us, and she immediately tried to get back in her crib, so that we would find her where she was supposed to be! Needless to say, we installed her toddler rail that same day.

Since then, Lucy’s been loving the Big Kid life (so much so, that when I call her my baby!, she immediately corrects me by saying, big kid now!; for reference, she turned 2 in January), but only recently has she warmed up to the idea of big kid bedding. We didn’t want to rush her, but when she started using her stuffies as pillows, we knew she was ready! Leading up to her first night in a fully equipped bed – comforter, pillow and all! – we would say: Are you excited for your very own pillow? and Pretty soon, you’ll have a big blanket!

Big Kid Bedding (for Pint Sized Cribs!)

We teamed up with IKEA to get everything we needed to transform Lucy’s crib to a big kid bed, and to say she was excited would be an understatement! I closed myself in her room for an hour and prepped everything for her, and when we surprised with her own blanket, her own pillow, her own plush pig(!), she began trying to gather everything she could into her arms. Ugh, my sweetheart.

Did you know IKEA has pint sized crib bedding? I was so happy to find this appropriately sized crib comforter insert, along with the cutest cover and reversible pillowcase! I couldn’t pass up this fitted crib sheet (sprinkled in blueberries!) and this quilted blanket to tie it altogether. I tossed in a plush pig for good measure, and Lucy hasn’t let him out of her sight since.

The quilted blanket (above) also makes the perfect play area for Lucy to dump her blocks, ponies or letters and have a soft surface to roll around on. And because the mom in me can never have too many blankets at the ready, I picked up this vintage-washed quilt, too. It reminds me of denim – the color, weight and feel – and you know I can never pass up a good chambray!

Books for Every Age

I couldn’t resist picking up a few books, because one can never have too many story time options, right? IKEA has the most adorable collection of books, all beautifully illustrated and for a range of ages. Orangutan is Scared caught my attention – Lucy loves monkeys right now! – and Meet the Tiger is full of fascinating facts and infographics (for the nerd in all of us!).

Fun fact: The first time I read Orangutan to Lucy, Scott couldn’t stop laughing at my pronunciation of the word. This led us down a rabbit hole of the right way to pronounce it, and the verdict is still out. How do you pronounce it?!

Trains + Dolls

If you’ve ever browsed the toys available at IKEA, you probably know how hard it is to resist throwing everything in your online shopping cart! Not only is everything a great value (because, IKEA!), but the aesthetics are simple, pleasing and the perfect jumping off point for creative learning. We limited our toy purchase to this 20-piece train set and doll house, two things that Lucy is captivated by. We knew they would bring her so much joy!

Lucy is at the magical age where she’s learning and growing so much! I say this at every age, but I am truly in awe of watching her take in the world around her. And I’m happy to report that her first night in her Big Kid bed was a (literal) dream.

Hi Kim! Inquiring minds need to know – how were you pronouncing orangutan? I apparently pronounce it orangutangReplyCancel

    • Kim4.17.20 - 8:46 AM

I pronounced it the same way as you, and Scott couldn’t stop laughing! Google tells us that there’s no G sound at the end, but my brain can’t turn it off!ReplyCancel

Lovely!  How fun to watch your little one grow up a bit and find her doing her “own thing” on her own, you must have been very surprised.  Book, books and more books plus those sheets… Love it. ReplyCancel

Same way as you! Apparently we’re wrong, haha!ReplyCancel

I love the update!  I also love the blue quilt.  I noticed on the IKEA website the color of the quilt looks much lighter than in your photos.  I’m wondering what is your view of the color?  Your photos makes it look like a nice rich denim blue, whereas in the IKEA website pics it’s looking like more of a lighter chambray mid-blue.  Thanks!ReplyCancel

I noticed that when I was linking it! In person, its a much darker blue. It really looks like a dark pair of blue jeans, although there is some variation in it due to the ‘vintage washed’ look of it. But mine is no where near as light as it looks online.ReplyCancel

I gotta give that credit to IKEA! It comes with mounting holes and can double as a bookshelf!ReplyCancel

  • Steph M4.17.20 - 5:56 PM

So sweet!! I just am hoping one day my soon to be 18 month old decides that sleeping by herself is greater than sleeping with Mama. ???? I was eyeing the pink tiger bedding at IKEA the last time. I might need to hoard it for that day.ReplyCancel

  • Natalia4.17.20 - 7:27 PM

Love it all!!!  Would you provide a source on that bookshelf?  The shelves coupled with the lower display area is genius! ReplyCancel

When my now young adult kids were in elementary school, they went to a summer day camp at our local zoo. We learned from the staff zoologist that orangutan means “old man of the forrest ”, and is pronounced oh-RAN-goo-TAHN. She said, and I quote, “It’s not old man of the powdered orange juice!”. ReplyCancel

So cute – IKEA is the best! Do you mind sharing where you got the curtains? I couldn’t seem to find the link. ReplyCancel

  • Steph4.21.20 - 3:42 PM

I pronounce it orang (or-ahng, with a hard g) utan (oo-tahn), because I grew up in Malaysia and it’s actually two Bahasa words that’ve been incorporated into one English word.  Orang translates to forest, and utan means people, so the literal translation is forest people :)  Also I love the update to Lucy’s room!ReplyCancel

  • Alli4.25.20 - 6:35 AM

What pillow did you use? About to do this for my son who is 2.5. Thank you for all the links! ReplyCancel

    • Kim4.25.20 - 3:01 PM

It’s the LEN crib pillow! It’s soft and thin, safe for our little bubs. It’s linked in the sources at the bottom of the post!ReplyCancel
