Lucy’s Back-to-School Wardrobe

Long gone are the days where we have the only say in what Lucy wears. Our 4-year-old has strong opinions on clothing, and she enjoys selecting her outfits every morning (sometimes going so far as to change into an afternoon and evening outfit, too!). We admire those strong opinions, her creativity and craving of bright colors, and we do what we can to nurture those sides of her.

The Yearly Try-On

This will be the second year that we’ve done a revamp of her closet, and we’ve found that assessing her wardrobe every fall has been a happy medium for her and us. Just as I did last year, I emptied her dresser of every item of clothing and did a ‘try on’ to see what still fits and what doesn’t. Then I made a list of what we needed to supplement and got to shopping! Our list was minimal this time around, with new jeans, socks and, per her request, additional ‘pink and purple things, please, Mom!’

Pink, Purple and Unicorns

It’s no secret that Lucy loves pink, purple and unicorns (see: exhibit A), and as someone that enjoys shopping for clothing for myself and her, my goal every year is to find that sweet middle ground. I also like to supplement with thrifted treasures, and I resist the urge to buy something I love simply because it’s so cute(!). If she doesn’t need it, I don’t buy it, and it’s that philosophy that has kept her closet from becoming overwhelming. I share my thought process on buying and accepting gifted clothing in this post, if you’d like to see.

Lucy’s Back to School Wardrobe

Below, I’m sharing a mix of items we purchased for back-to-school, all pre-approved by Lucy (she loves being a part of the process), along with a few lookalikes that were handed down to us.

Every time you post one of these I am jealous and upset that they do not come in adult sizes. That mustard jumpsuit! Are you kidding me?!ReplyCancel

My 4 year old would adore the yellow jumpsuit- but how does it work for solo bathroom trips at school? Or maybe it’s a weekend only outfit?ReplyCancel

She easily pulls it down over her shoulders 👍ReplyCancel
