Lighting + Hardware In The Scary Room

This post is in partnership with Rejuvenation

We started The Scary Room at the top of this year, and here we are, in the second half of April, and we are finally thisclose to the room’s starting point! I say ‘starting point,’ because do you remember where we began? Many of the rooms in this house required a lot of work to get us to the place where we could say, okay, we can finally paint now! As we dive into any room makeover, there is always drywall to patch and repair, outlets to be added (this old house didn’t come with many to start) and floors to scrub.

But The Scary Room?

The Scary Room may have been one of the worst, and we didn’t help matters by using it as our personal dumping ground for the last 3+ years. At the end of last year, we said, enough! We sorted, sold and cleaned out every last item in the room – rescued furniture, unloved rugs, wood remnants, fabric scraps and my (sad) sewing machine – and for the first time in a long time, we could actually see the walls! Once that dust had settled, we found ourselves standing on 130-year-old subfloor surrounded by crumbling drywall, plaster and lath, and we felt the cold drafts sweep through the bent windows.

Since that day, we hired our contractor to run new electrical, swap the old windows with new, widen the closet and repair the drywall. After which, we took over and laid the hardwood floor, updated and rescued all the millwork, painted and decked out the closet with cabinets and hunky bi-folds. Now, finally(!), we’re in the home stretch. We teamed up with one of our very favorite brands, Rejuvenation, for the finishing touches, and suddenly, the room is all check me out.

From the moment we installed this Small Tiered Drum Pendant – still quite large at 24″ wide! – the room gained so much dimension. We went with the antique brass finish, which is a showstopper in person (so warm, so cozy), and we liked that the ivory linen shade would provide a uniform glow – perfect for a bedroom.  To top it off, we paired it with an off-the-shelf ceiling medallion (caulked and painted) from the hardware store.

The pendant came with several lengths of downrod for full adjustability, and in our case, we opted for an 18″ drop (a 12″ + 6″ length), putting the bottom of the shade at the same height as the Cedar & Moss Conifer light in the adjoining studio. The fabric shades play so nicely with one another, and their fresh, yet subtle, appearances are still striking – due in large part to their size!

Let’s talk hardware! We originally thought we’d use long pulls (see those plans here), similar to what we used on the closet in our master bedroom renovation. But sitting on that idea for a few weeks had us realizing that we’d rather keep it simple. Understated. We knew we’d be adding thick trim to the closet doors, and the moldings around the doors are already intricate to begin with. In the end, we landed on these Large Oval Knobs in an unlacquered brass finish.

We do have this same finish on our bedroom closet pulls, and one of our favorite parts of using the unlacquered brass is knowing that the more they’re handled, the more the finish will naturally patina over time. We love that. (If that’s not your idea of a good time, I’d recommend sticking to an aged/antique brass or lacquered brass finish.)

Rather than repeat the same closet knobs on the cabinets above, we opted for these pretty cupboard latches! Also in unlacquered brass, we liked that the oval knob detail was a subtle nod to the hardware below it. We’ve always liked the look of latches in kitchens, but we’d yet to find an appropriate (non-fussy) use in our home. But because these cabinets will be used for deep storage (think: heavy winter blankets and that unloved sewing machine!), we agreed that we could handle that one extra step of turning the latch in exchange for the cuteness.

Once we have a better idea of furniture/bed/dresser placement in this room, we’ll also be adding this small plug-in Cypress sconce, a bold contrast against our palest gray walls. In the meantime, there are a handful of the teeniest, tiniest tweaks to make to this space before we can consider it ready-to-fill – outlet plates, a dimmer switch, etc – but we’ve already started swinging this door wide open! It’s such an adorable light filled room, and its ultimate potential exceeded our expectations from our starting point. We always knew there was a little gem hidden beneath the muck and mess, and it makes us so happy every time we pass that open door.

Longtime readers know that we have so much love for Rejuvenation, and it should come as no surprise that they want to spread the love to you, too! And so together with Rejuvenation, we’ll be giving away $250 towards anything in their store! Using the Rafflecopter widget below, enter as many ways as you’d like. This giveaway is eligible for those located in the United States or Canada and runs through Friday, April 21st until 5pm CST. • Ling4.19.17 - 1:21 PM

The idea of adding trim to flat bifold doors is SO genius!! Why have I never thought of that??? MY house is FILLED with them. They’re hollow though, so not sure I could beef them up with trim very well, but still might give it a try! Nothing to lose :) Thank you for sharing!ReplyCancel

We have a mile-long wishlist at rejuvenation right now- we just moved into a 1970’s colonial and it hasn’t been updated since the early 90s. Thankfully all the ugly wallpaper was removed before us, but there’s a lot of hardware past it’s prime and ugly (or missing) light fixtures!ReplyCancel

  • Hollie @ Stuck on Hue4.20.17 - 10:08 AM

You have done great things to the formerly scary room. The doors are looking great with the beefy trim, the pendant is perfect, and I LOVE me some cupboard latches. I used a combo of knobs and cupboard latches in my former Craftsman kitchen and loved them. They’re definitely on the list for my 1916 kitchen reno. Such character.ReplyCancel

  • Anna Kristina4.20.17 - 3:21 PM

This room looks amazing already! I’d be tempted to get new cabinet/drawer pulls for our kitchen. I like the Canfield in brass!ReplyCancel

  • Katy4.20.17 - 3:54 PM

The Scary Room is definitely not so scary anymore. The brass looks fantastic with the color of the walls. What is the paint color?

I would LOVE to have one of Rejuvenation’s gorgeous rugs. The difficult part would be choosing which one…ReplyCancel

  • Gill4.21.17 - 10:27 AM

This room is stunning, and it is all in the details. I can’t get over those latches, they’re perfect! Out of curiosity, what lighting would you have chosen for a room with 10′ ceilings?ReplyCancel

    • Kim4.21.17 - 10:29 AM

These ceilings are only a few inches shy of 10′! So I’d say we’d still choose this drum pendant. :)ReplyCancel

      • Gill4.22.17 - 1:44 PM

Hi Kim, I goofed – I meant 8′ ceilings – I love the fixtures you selected, but think they might be too much for an 8′ ceiling. I’d love your input!ReplyCancel

        • Kim4.24.17 - 9:12 AM

I believe the light we chose could get as short as a 6″ down rod – But if you’re looking for something even shorter, we always search for semi-flush mounts. For example, anything in this category would be perfect for 8′ ceilings! Unless it’s above a dining table – then for a lower hanging show stopper. :)ReplyCancel

  • Ryan4.21.17 - 11:55 AM

I have gotten all of my replacement hardware for our kitchen from Rejuvenation because it’s an exact match to what was there before, but not pitted and scratched. We have the cupboard latches on our cabinets and they’re not really fussy (in case anyone is deterred by that idea). It’s still one motion to open, just twist and pull at the same time. Bonus if you live in earthquake country your know your plates and glassware won’t come flying out during an earthquake :).ReplyCancel

  • Emily4.21.17 - 12:20 PM

  • Norma12.18.17 - 10:44 PM

What colors did you use to paint wall and trim?ReplyCancel

  • Valerie5.27.20 - 4:12 PM

I love the tiered drum pendant light and actually had it in my cart. But I decided to check reviews on this company first. The reviews all recent btw are awful..wrong sizes sent or damaged items, and returns nearly impossible.  Communication, customer service rated as horrible experience. One customer stated “This was a great company until Pottery Barn took it over”. So I am fearful of ordering this lighting fixture now. I also thought the delivery time 4-6 wks was a long time.ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.27.20 - 5:22 PM

Oh, that’s sad to hear! We’ve had nothing but lovely experiences with Rejuvenation and recommend them wholeheartedly! They’re still a great small team of people that are passionate about what they’re creating.ReplyCancel
