Learning to Style

By April, the Vargos will have their media wall. Eee! While plans are still in the works (but oh, so close!), I’m finding myself getting weirdly excited, scared, and slightly obsessive about those bare, empty shelves to-be. Since most of our books are stored in our office, the majority of open display is still up in the air. You may remember our current set-up, flanked here by the better suited plans – adding the much needed hidden media storage (yay!):

And we may have mentioned that we’re nixing the green and continuing the kinda-minty color from the adjacent wall, Behr’s Winterfresh. So with a new-ish paint palette to stare at, you can bet I’m pumped to layer in the color with select hardback books, fresh flowers (come spring!), and possibly our man, Stanley. I’ve been collecting images from the big, bad bloggy world – all in the name of inspiration. Here are some of my favorites, even if they don’t quite translate, but still pretty:

While we do have our living room shelves layered with prints and photographs, I admit that I’m stumped when the time comes to jazz up a whole new blank slate. We’re thinking clean and simple and working with what we’ve got (mostly) – especially since we’ll be staring at the wall for hours and days on end come playoff time (Go, Pens!).

Yes, we do have a few ideas and know some of those basics, such as small groupings and pairing like items. But in a space as small as ours, we wonder: should we stick to layering in monotone colors to avoid crazy? Adding reflective, pretty vases for simplicity? And I should mention that the entire bottom row will be exposed record storage, and the very top is reserved for our children. (I know, I kinda just axed half the options.) We’re still looking for effortless fun on the rest, but even that seems… difficult. Oy. Tips? Advice? How do you style?

i’m normally not a big color lady, but that third photo down with the yellow chair? gorgeous!
i’m impressed with people who can get the right tchotski balance. i end up looking like a crazy hoarder, while others get that “delightful eccentric” look right off the bat.ReplyCancel
