Lucy turns 4 today, and we’re celebrating by kicking off the design of her purple and pink unicorn big girl bedroom! This is how we’re making it happen.
As I sat down to officially kick off Lucy’s Big Girl Bedroom – AKA the ‘Pink and Purple Unicorn Room!’ – I had an urge to re-read her birth story, and here I am now, wondering HOW she’s 4. Today, Lucy turns 4! I still think of her as my tiny baby, with a fuzzy head and insatiable appetite. Instead, she’s growing out of all her pants, insisting on salami for dinner every night, and requesting a purple bedroom with stars, flowers and rainbows.
Choosing Items for a Unicorn Room
We want to give her all those things, in a way that she can grow with. As Scott likes to say, ‘It doesn’t have to be so on-the-nose.’ Lucy has been loving helping us make choices – I’ll ask her, ‘This or that?’ – and to set everyone up for success, we’ll narrow down my favorites first, knowing that we’ll also love anything she chooses. Daily, she reminds us that purple is her first choice for wall color, and she excitedly chose these unicorn sheets. Keeping with the theme, we’re also choosing items with texture and star patterns. Luster sheens, soft velvet and shiny brass are a nod to the whimsical animal, and we’re grounding it all with leather and linen – or earth tones, as I tell Lucy.
The images above and below are the direction we’re heading, although since creating the mood board (below), we found a gorgeous antique mirror that will replace this arched brass mirror. Most of the artwork from her nursery will – I think – find a place in the new design, although with slight modifications. (I’m thinking of changing one of her paint-by-number horse paintings into a unicorn!) You’ll also notice the use of white and cream, but again, there are silky sheens and tufted details that elevate the design, perfect for a child, teen and beyond.

The Perfect Purple Paint
Of course we realize that Lucy’s tastes will change over time, and as she gets older, we will welcome her ideas and value her opinion. For now, I don’t know who’s more excited about her room makeover – her or me! She loves when I ask her questions, and she gets a kick out of flipping through my paint decks. That said, her ideas and tastes are really, really stretching my creative muscles, and I find myself enjoying this process so much!
This brings me to paint. PAINT! Her request for purple walls has been my biggest challenge, and as much as my heart was being pulled towards shades of blush, I promised her (as much as myself) that she will get that purple room. I love that she wants to be creative with me, and I will one-hundred percent feed that passion as much as I can. After sifting through close to 50 shades of purple, we landed on Valspar’s Mellow Mauve! (I have to laugh at the name, because mauve would imply a pinky-er shade, but I have to give myself a little bit of credit for diving fully into my purple promise.)
We’re Adding a Lofted Bed, Too!
But I’m saving the best for last, because we’re adding a lofted bed to her room, too! Hands down, Scott is most excited for this part of the project. We’re keeping the design simple, but it will certainly be impactful. Lucy’s room is narrow at just 7′ wide, so we’ll be able to stretch the loft bed design from wall to wall, giving it a truly custom look. Lucy has been lusting for a bunk bed for as long as we’ve been planning her room, and I totally get it. As a kid, who doesn’t love a bunk bed? Our hope is that the loft bed will grow with her, allowing for space below for a desk or small sofa as she goes from a toddler to a little kid to a tween – but let’s not get ahead of ourselves (my heart can’t handle it!). More on that as those plans unfold!
In the meantime, her room will get painted next week, and we have a fun design ‘hack’ for the starry lighting we’re adding to the ceiling. There will be a lot of fun little details we’ll be injecting to the space, and we’ll take you along for every step of the ride on Instagram @yellowbrickhome, with big updates unfolding on the blog as well!
