Hooked On Storage

While it hasn’t necessarily been all that blog-worthy in the past, we’d like to welcome our hallway coat closet and it’s pesky problem. After finding plastic stick-on coat hooks about a year ago (and at a buck each from our local Home Depot), we were excited to put ’em to use on the back of the closet door and get our cold day accessories out of those under-bed bins. While they seemed to be fine at first, their flaw quickly made itself known as they started falling off of the door one by one. Hats and scarves were soon worse off than before, piled to wrinkled heaps on the floor. We’d stick and re-stick. Every day.

Enter my handy new drill and the infamous Grandpa Jar, and we were well on our way towards the solution. While still (somewhat) adhered to the door, I started by drilling two small pilot holes into each hook, eyeballing my measurements.

Once the holes were drilled, I used eight small and uniform screws from the Jar, tightened them in, and we were done. Lucky for us, our doors are made of solid wood, making this task easy in as few steps as possible. If your doors happen to be hollow-core doors, I’d suggest adding the extra step of using anchors so that the screws have something to bite into.

Rather than give up on those dollar hooks, this solution cost us zilch and only moments of our time. We’re still not sure what took us so long to just do it, considering clean up was virtually non-existent and we spent all of 5 minutes from start to finish.

With Old Man Winter already swinging into full force, it was about time we faced our dilemma, rather than dusting off our caps each time we run out the door. We find our hidden door storage is an easy way to organize accessories while keeping everything at arms reach and, most importantly, out of sight.

Has anyone else found a simple solution to modify an inexpensive storage find? Or perhaps you’ve also put off an easy answer to a perpetually annoying problem? Share those details, and let us know how drilling holes in bargain-bin items has made your lives easier.

I totally would have done the same thing! I hate when stuff falls and even worse when heavy things fall and break! ahhh- no bueno!

I use the Command hooks a lot around my rental but i’ve heard a little rumor that they only last about 3 months before you have to replace and re-stick the sticky-part? oof – I can’t wait to own a house!

This is awesome! We just have over-the-door hooks on every single door in the house. There’s a serious lack of storage options in my apartment.ReplyCancel

Just last week we cleaned off our hallway coat rack to stash half of what had accumulated there–jackets, sweaters, hoodies and scarves were piled a good foot into our living space. We use a lot of over-the-door hooks (doable if your door still closes after).

As for modding inexpensive storage, we’re big believers in shelves, spines and brackets–just about everything we’ve built can be taken down and repurposed.ReplyCancel

I have those same hooks! Stan wouldn’t let me use them in the bathroom for towels, and now I see why. I’m using one to hold my apron in the kitchen, and so far it’s stuck (but maybe that just means that I don’t use my apron enough?). Anyway, way to make it work! Bundle up good, now. :-)ReplyCancel
