Home is…

…the warm sound of black plastic spinning at 33 1/3 RPMs on our trusty Stanton turntable. Don’t get us wrong; we’re not vinyl snobs. Our iPods get a thorough workout too. That said, afternoons and weekends at home often find us scouring the bottom shelf of our entertainment center for the perfect 12″ soundtrack.

We’re set on everything from Arcade Fire to Frank Zappa (alphabetized of course!), with healthy doses of Aerosmith, Talking Heads, The Police and Zeppelin sandwiched neatly in between. We’ve hauled enough bins of vinyl on moving days to know enough to weed out the junk (although my lady refuses to rid us of The Bangles, Wilson Phillips, and Berlin). Yard sales, thrift shops, flea markets and (gasp!) record stores are a few of our favorite haunts to track down that copy of Thriller your mom pitched when you packed up for college. Remember the gatefold cover with MJ and the tiger cub? I thought you would.

Sure, changing record sides every 20 minutes can seem like a bit of a hassle at the beginning, but it’ll all be worth the effort when you remember how incredible side 1 of Some Girls sounded the first time it rocked your face off from start to finish… pure audio perfection.

What’s your vinyl story? Are you an avid collector, or are you terrified of the storage dilemma of stacking all of that rock n’ roll in your space?  Let’s hear it. (No pun intended.)

I love vinyls! Sadly our turntable doesn’t get much of a workout at the moment because it needs a needle. And to be moved back to the tv console from its current location under the erg (why??). Here’s hoping I bug the hubs enough to get that done soon!ReplyCancel

I’m a novice vinyl lover. I love searching out great vinyl, and I’m lusting after a record player. Hoping to find one soon! Sidenote: there is no reason to get rid of The Bangles, Wilson Phillips, and Berlin. :)ReplyCancel

Clint laughs because I have a vinyl collection and a non working record player. My dad recently gave me an Alice Cooper album he had. It came with womens underwear around the record! You are so right! Vinyl is tops!ReplyCancel

That’s awesome! I don’t have any vinyl, but my mom has loads of old classical recordings. They sound so much more amazing than CDs.ReplyCancel

HA! I agree that vinyl sound is so much better, and like you said, it’s also kind of an “side dish” activity for weekend entertainment. If you have friends over it’s fun to play some vinyls and go down memory lane with them….I am all for it. Also lovely living room area, love the blue walls!ReplyCancel

    Ladies,

Get those broken turntables running! There is no better time than fall to hole up with a few good friends and a few good drinks and rock out to some classics.

I just found this website http://www.needledoctor.com that seems to stock everything.

Now there’s no excuse to let those records continue to gather dust!!ReplyCancel

I love vinyl! My favorite memories are playing the christmas albums on christmas morning while opening presents. Also, I love me some Barbara Streisand. I’ve listened to the Funny Girl soundtrack about a million times.ReplyCancel
