Hanging Our Vintage Egg Chair + Other Favorites!

We think of our spaces as works in progress. Our tastes, as well as the ways that we utilize rooms, can shift over time and motivate us to make changes – as they should! A home should evolve and grow with you and your family. Now that we’ve owned our Tree House for a little more than two years, we’ve realized that some of the early decisions we made could use a small tweak or two to maximize the home’s usefulness. And on the opposite end of the spectrum, sometimes we fall very hard for a piece of furniture or art that we simply can’t pass up – ha! – and subsequently end up making changes to a space to allow it to fit. This vintage egg chair is a case of the latter. We didn’t know we needed it until we found it; our mantra as we scour thrift stores, flea markets and yard sales, essentially.

You may remember said chair from when some wonderful friends came to visit us in Chicago earlier this year. (The video is worth a watch!) At the time, we weren’t totally sure where the chair would end up, but we quickly decided that it perfectly complimented the laid-back Michigandinavian vibe at our Tree House. However, we needed a solution to hang it (enter this hanging kit), and never content to leave well enough alone, we also came up with an easy way to conceal the black plastic connectors on the kit and class things up a bit!

And just for fun, we rounded up a big batch of readily available egg chairs at the end of this post!

Tools + Supplies Used

What We Did:

The first (and in our case, most challenging) step was to locate a ceiling joist that could appropriately support the weight of the chair as well as a full-size human. The ceilings in our bedroom are wood tongue and groove of an unknown vintage, which proved to be a challenge for our stud finder. The thickness of the boards seemed to keep it from reading accurately, so we were forced to improvise. We were able to locate a linear row of nail pops and use some simple math to confirm the location of a joist. Phew!

We then marked our mounting location with a pencil and screwed in the ceiling support loop that came with our chair mounting kit. This thing is stuuuuurdy. Note: This kit had everything we needed to securely hang our egg chair, from the ceiling mount to spring and swivel hooks, plus all the screws!

Once the ceiling loop was in place, next came the shock-absorbing spring and the swivel hook, then the rope itself. With our mounting kit, the rope doubles through the built-in metal ring on the chair and is adjustable using the sliding mechanism between the two black plastic blocks.

With the kit installed and the rope adjusted to the proper length (we measured the seat of the chair to a height of 16″, knowing that we’d be adding a 2″ padded cushion), we used leather leftover from our DIY candle cozy project to conceal the hardware and give the whole kit a fancier, more polished look. We started by marking each side of the leather every half inch with our scratch awl (if a scratch awl isn’t on hand, a fine-tipped black marker would work just as well). We then followed our marks and used our leather punch to make perfectly round holes along each edge. This tool requires some hand strength, but is oddly satisfying and fun to use. Highly recommend!

Once the leather was neatly punched, Kim used the suede lacing to wrap the rope hardware. The flexibility of the soft deerskin leather allowed it to be pulled tightly and hug the form of the connectors for a cleaner look.

It’s worth noting that in order to make room for this fantastic vintage find, we had to free up a bit of extra space on Kim’s side of the bed. We removed her former side table and installed another floating bedside table to match the one on my side of the room (and the pair in the guest room). The change allowed more room for the chair and opened up the space nicely without sacrificing much usability.

Kim ordered this 18″ round cushion in the color Heather Fern, which has two small loops and snaps in the back for a snug fit. The color is a near-perfect match to the cushion on our dog nook on the other side of the room, balancing the bedroom nicely!

It may go without saying, but this chair is insanely comfortable! The soft cushion offers just the right amount of padding and the chair hangs at a very slight angle to keep you nestled nicely toward the backrest. It’ll be the perfect spot to read a book and unwind.

Overall, the entire installation and leather-wrapping project took us about 45 minutes to complete. If the ceilings in our home were standard drywall that didn’t give our stud finder a hard time, we could have finished even quicker! We feel fortunate to have find this chair at one of our favorite local vintage shops (Vintage Quest if you’re in Chicago!), but if you’re hoping to replicate the look, we’ve compiled a round-up of egg chairs and hanging chairs in many different price points, below. Happy hunting!

I splurged on that target egg chair (#6) and couldn’t love it more! It is insanely comfortable and you can’t go wrong no matter which way you choose to sit in it. Note that it is GIGANTIC which is awesome for curling up in–2 people can fit in there! But we had to have multiple friends with different cars come and try to pick us up from Target since it wouldn’t fit in my car. Just chillin’ in front of Target with an unboxed egg chair, NBD.ReplyCancel

Great vintage find. I like your hanging chair’s long clean lines more than any of the newer options. (fyi, the pouf link connects to the seat cushion.)ReplyCancel

Can you say a bit about how far away from each wall you hung it? And how you decided on that distance? I’m trying to decide if I can fit one!ReplyCancel

We sort of only had one option with how far from the window wall we could put it, because we wanted it to go directly into a stud. Then we did the same distance away from the other wall along the stud. (If we went out one more stud, it would have looked too far away from the wall..) In the end, it’s about 16″ away from each wall. While that’s not a lot, it’s not exactly for swinging, just more lounging. :)ReplyCancel
