Funny Little Console

After we painted our nook green, we worked on setting up storage for our records, laying down a new (old) rug, and it’s also the home of our yellow chair (although we’re on the hunt for something more nap-inducing!). Everything was okay for now, but we’d yet to find a console for our turntable. For the first few weeks, our record player sat on the floor until Scott insisted we needed something to support it – and so, it sat atop our two-toned end table for the last month.

Until now!

I’ve said over and over that this nook is full of funny, awkward little angles (I was just tempted to say sorry for sounding like a broken record, but I can only handle being so painfully punny in one week!), and I have a running list of measurements in my phone of all the small (or not so small) walls throughout the home that are in need of something (i.e., the dining room wall, dead kitchen space, etc.). This nook within our nook is just 3′ wide, set back 20″ from the wall that the Vittsjo‘s on, and we’ve been keeping an eye out for something that’s wide enough to fill the space, but not so deep that it’ll stick out at yet another awkward angle. Surprisingly (not surprisingly?), this is really hard to find!

While Kalli was in town, we spent a day in Andersonville – a Chicago neighborhood that’s full of thrifty treasures, antiques and bakeries! – and we made sure to stop into one of our favorite hidden gems, Good Deal Garage:

The store is, quite literally, inside a garage (right off of Clark St. on Olive, just north of Bryn Mawr – Chicago kids, go there! Go now!), and not only is the owner ridiculously nice – and the store bursting with treasures and steals – but he also had the perfect table on hand! It’s funny little size was perfect for our funny little nook – too wide for an end table, too small and short for a console – and after texting a few photos to Scott, we were loading it into the back of our wagon. Yes!

Sunday afternoon, while Scott trimmed out our coat closet, I wiped our console down with Danish oil and followed it up with Feed-N-Wax (the abbreviated version of our wood refresh) before moving it into the nook. Once it was in place and all the cables were tidied up, I exclaimed, ugh, it’s just a shame it doesn’t fit the space better! (On opposite day, maybe!) In other words… well, it’s perfect:

The top drawer is nice and roomy for storing turntable accessories and magazines, and the bottom compartment will be great for tucking away our favorite used and worn paperbacks. The subversive cross-stitch is one of my favorite gifts from a friend; it’s a great daily reminder around this house. (Like I said earlier this week, when silly stress is getting the best of you, it’s just trim!) And! How cute are those legs?

On the other side of the room, we picked up this faux-gold (and really rusty) magazine rack that we’re using for the current records in rotation, and for now, I’ve moved out the old attic lamp. It didn’t feel right in the nook, but maybe in the bedroom? Or the guest room?

We still need to order a shade for this window (it currently looks out into our neighbor’s front yard), and as I mentioned earlier, the yellow chair isn’t permanent – nor are the floor tiles. The hardwood still needs something ooshy and cushy – something that’ll invite you in to curl up and re-read your favorite novel.

Even still, there’s no rush on any of that, and just as with our newest little addition, we’ll stumble upon the right things in time. When we’re least expecting it. The best kind of find!

Gorgeous table! You guys always find amazing pieces when thrifting but this table takes the cake given how well it fits in the space. Like it was made for it! This little room is turning into quite the sweet little nook I am sure you have dreamed of from the start. So glad you didnt turn this room into a closet like many people I know would have done!ReplyCancel

I really love your new piece of furniture, you definitely have an eye for great finds. I’m jealous because I never find any of those in second-hand stores in France (and antique shops are so expensive… ). Have a nice week-end Yellow Brick Home family !ReplyCancel

I really am in love with this little room. I could definitely see myself cozying up in there with a good book listening to my lps. Speaking of, where is the receiver and the speakers? I see the wires, but I don’t recall seeing any other components in previous posts of this set up. Or is this hooked up to the wall speakers in the other room?

And that little cabinet truly is perfect. I love it when things work out like that. =)ReplyCancel

The turntable is hooked up to the receiver in our media center, just on the other side of the room: https://yellowbrickhome.com/2014/02/17/media-makeover/

And it plays through those speakers as well. We’ve debated adding speakers in this room, but I nixed the old ones (they’re huge!), and since we put money and energy into finding the perfect speakers for the LIVING ROOM (and it’s right there), we’re not rushing into it… Scott may have another idea though!ReplyCancel

Oh my gosh I hate you. Well, no, I love you two (3,4,5!) but you’ve found a piece so perfect for the space it makes me sick! Hahah! I can never find anything — we need a thrift store like that in this neck of the woods.

But seriously, great find! It’s perfect & I love the wood colour. Puuurdy!ReplyCancel

  • It looks like you built the nook around the console. What a great find! I can’t believe how well it fits. I love the contrast of the green walls with the warm wood.ReplyCancel
