DIY Spring Wreath

Since getting a grown-up phone at the end of last year (after a much needed upgrade from my Zack Morris cell), I’m slowly learning the app lingo, my favorite being Instagram. Even still, it took me almost 3 months to learn how to look at friends’ photos on the home screen (or is it my feed?), and I’m probably not even using that terminology right. You can find me (and my gobs of pet photos) @yellowbrickhome – but, um, is that how it works?

So while loading my windmill photo on our trek back from Indy, I skipped over to my feed and saw my friend Kelly’s new front door color and pretty, spring-y adornment:

I shared the photo with Scott – while he was driving, not advisable (and by then, we just wanted to get home!) – but he agreed that it was, indeed, cute (my words, not his). I made a mental note to ask her to share her DIY, took a nap until we reached the Chicago skyline, and emailed her the next day. I’m a bad driving companion.

Here’s what she had to say:

I got the inspiration to do a painted grapevine wreath from my mom. She painted one over the Christmas holiday and I thought it turned out so cute that I planned to make my own once I finally painted my front door. Painting the front door has been on the list for years (yikes!) and this early Spring weather combined with extreme pregnancy nesting finally got me in gear. As soon as the door was finished, I knew I wanted a mustard yellow grapevine wreath to compliment the blue door. I went to Hobby Lobby to pick up a wreath & spray paint and was surprised at how cheap they are – only $4.99 for the wreath! It was another $4.99 for the spray paint, and I had my wreath done for about $10.

I was so happy with how the wreath turned out once it was painted, but I didn’t like the “naked” look. So, I took to good ol’ Pinterest for inspiration on how to decorate it. I knew I wanted to add some other pops of color to the wreath, and I finally decided on some felt flowers.

I had the purple & gray felt on hand and I used this method to make the flowers. Once I had those done, I still wanted more, so I found the white flowers in a potpourri pack I had and they ended up being the perfect fit to complete the wreath! I am very happy with the way the wreath turned out and the new curb appeal it has given to our house. A very cheap, easy and quick DIY project that anyone could tackle!

Thanks, Kelly! We love the way it turned out, and you know we’re dreaming of our own front door to paint, not to mention curb appeal – someday. For now, our coir mat will have to do (and that’s okay!). Any spring-y front door sprucing on your end?

I have been reading your blog for awhile now, but am usually just a lurker… but I had to comment about this post. I love your reference to your Zack Morris cell, haha. Just yesterday my husband and I were at the doctors office and were speaking to this teenage girl in the waiting room. She had a brand new iphone and my husband casually mentioned how far they have come since his flip phone not too long ago. The look on her face was priceless haha. Flip phone? I don’t even think she remembers that haha. Anyway I love your blog and I think it is so nice what you have done with your home. And I love, love, love your pet portraits… I definitely would like to contact you about getting one of our two crazy pups in the near future :-)ReplyCancel

Thank you, Rachel! Your story literally made me laugh out loud – my old phone was so embarrassing, that I would avoid answering it in public (especially on public transport!) just so people wouldn’t stare. Ha!

I do hope to hear from you and your crazy pups. The crazier, the better!ReplyCancel
