Curtains That Make the Difference

Our living room is slowly chugging along, and with every new addition, we find ourselves saying, now this makes a big difference! The blue sofa and rug were game changers, and hanging our over-sized art helped to keep the room from feeling too bottom heavy. And most recently (and better yet!) – curtains!

A few months ago, we began the process of installing all new solid interior doors, and at the same time, we dove into the living room baseboards. We ripped out the teeny, tiny existing boards and continued with our taller choice, and while we were at it, we gave the first floor picture window substantial trim and an 8″ sill, too:

sill-done

To be honest, it took us a while to really knock it all out, as we were also shuffling around outdoor projects. Rather than try to push all the trim at once, we’d cut and install on a work night, spackle the next day, caulk the night after that, and paint another. It felt as though we were moving at a snail’s pace, but it made the task much less monstrous and got us where we wanted to be eventually. Slow and steady, slow and steady. (We’ve already discussed doing the studio baseboards the same way; we just have to start!)

trim-header

Before starting on the sill for the living room, we knew we’d eventually be adding curtains, and we wanted to emphasize the height of our tall ceilings (they come in around 10′) by hanging them as close to the ceiling as the panel lengths would allow. With that in mind, we added the same chunky header to the window that we’d been doing for our doors, simply so the gap between the top of the trim and the rod wasn’t too large.

But! As for the curtains themselves, we teamed up with the super awesome, super friendly crew at West Elm (hang tight, they love you, too!). We initially thought we’d want curtains that brought in a small touch of pattern, and we were leaning towards these panels, but after seeing them in person, we realized that the undertones were too warm for our tastes. After discussing everything from pattern to blue to gray, we landed on tried and true clean, white panels. White panels never disappoint! They play so nicely with that trim we worked on (and worked on – we will never undermine the effort that goes into an entire room of trim ever again!), and to keep things interesting, we paired them with this over-sized rod in brass. We had hoped for brass clips as well but took a chance on glossy black, and we are loving it!

After washing and drying the curtains, we hung the rod as high as it would go while allowing the curtains to almost touch the floor. And rather than clip the rings to the top of the panels, we stuck with this old trick of faking a pinch pleat by attaching them behind the panel. We also chose to hang two panels per side (so we actually have four curtains up there!) to keep things looking extra full.

Scott has been on the brass train with me for a while now (love that guy), but at first he was worried it might be too shiny/not shiny enough and actually – could it? – clash with our entryway light. Luckily, the rod is a perfect match (hooray!), and as we’ve begun pulling colors and elements from other connecting rooms the flow in our house is feeling right. (Now to get those chairs upholstered in non-scratchy fabric!)

I think I’d pair it with the navy velvet curtains, but their black out curtains look surprisingly lovely and I might prefer those (living in a city means streetlights outside our windows, we’ve gotten pretty used to it, but I wonder if we’d sleep better if we tried to block them out). Fantastic giveaway and I love your curtains!ReplyCancel

  • Phyllis Ensign8.8.14 - 7:35 AM

Your living room is really coming together and looks so inviting!

Confession: I have the same curtain rods from West Elm in brushed nickel, but they are doing me no good packaged up and under my bed. Ugh! Seeing how great yours look is enough of an incentive for me to do something about that situation this weekend.

I don’t need curtains at the moment, but I’m in desperate need of new dinnerware….so that’s how I’d spend the gift card!ReplyCancel

Curtains look great! …but so do the floors. I searched for a post about them, but I couldn’t find one. Can you point me in the right direction? Or, tell me if they’re new/refinished and the color? I bought my first home this past winter. I love almost everything about the house except for the light wood trim and door. It’s a mid century house with that milky yellow wood color – yuck! I think light floors like this could help a lot.ReplyCancel

    • Kim8.8.14 - 9:37 AM

Hi Heather! The floors were already here when we purchased the home, so we don’t have much information about them. We did need to patch in a small section of our second floor landing, and we just went to a local floor retailer until we find a good match.ReplyCancel
