Closing + Moving

It’s happening! We’re moving!

We know it feels like we’ve been talking about this for months – hinting at it here and there (constantly, it seems!), but not really saying much else at all. We’re sorry. It’s been a long and winding road (and the topic of every dinner conversation for months), and the superstitious side of us didn’t want to divulge until we sealed that loan commitment, nailed down a closing date, and signed off on all contracts. But! It’s time, and we have our closing date: June 7th! And we’re moving! July 1st!

Aah, notice the big difference in the closing and moving date?

Our soon-to-be home is occupied by tenants, but we opted for a sooner closing date to lock in our lower rate for the new mortgage. This big reason (the current tenants) combined with a slammed market is why it’s taken so long to get us to the closing table. For weeks, we’ve been in negotiations with the seller, and only now have we all come to one happy agreement. Those tenants – who knew there was a looming move in their future – will be out by the end of June, and for privacy reasons, we’re not sharing any photos of the home until they’ve vacated and we’re in. (More suspense!)

So while we can’t share photos just yet, we can say this: There’s a yard! There’s a front porch and a garage and stairs! It’s a two flat, and we’ll be converting it to a single family – with a bigger studio, larger living room and a bedroom that’ll fit more than just a bed. It couldn’t be more different than the UNreal One; it’s a blank slate, truly. It’s 100 years old, with low-end updates over the years, and we’ve been joking with our friends that we cannot wait to, uh, jump its bones (too much?).

Yes, the Unreal One was a dreamboat, but we now realize it was for the best; we fell hard for that home, but we weren’t in love with the new-to-us neighborhood. But this (soon-to-be) home? It’s in our current ‘hood; the same streets and nooks and brunch spots we’ve had a love affair with since the day we moved to Chicago – 7 years ago. Location was key to this home. A shabby interior can be fixed, location cannot. (We all know this though, right?)

So, what’s next? We pack. We purge. We talk about how bittersweet it is to leave this little home, and we excite Jack with promises of his huge city yard – and the girls with whole rooms to themselves.

We can’t wait to share this new journey with you. (We’re bursting, really.)

Moving is a huge pain in the butt, but it is fun at the same time. I love setting up a new house, arranging my furniture in a new space and organizing everything. Now I am getting jealous! My little Cape of Dreams is not finished yet, and we won’t be relocating for a while. However, the itch is growing. Good luck with your move! I cannot wait to see the pictures of the new house and all of the renovations you do to it.ReplyCancel

So awesome! Congrats! Can’t wait to see the pix and so glad to hear that you’ll bring some glory back to a 100-year old house. We’ve been in one for 3.5 years now, and though a ton of work, nothing beats the detail and beauty in these old houses. And a yard! There is something so magical and soothing about working on a garden.
Looks like I’ll have to get my next foster portrait ordered! Once moving day rolls around, you are going to be BUSY!ReplyCancel

  • Kim6.3.13 - 10:36 AM

Kira, you’re not kidding! I’m front loading a ton of orders as I write this, so I can take a teeny, tiny break to unpack and move! Things will be nutty. Now’s the perfect time to stock up on Pet Shop portraits!ReplyCancel

  • Monika6.3.13 - 10:50 AM

Congratulations!! So glad its all working out perfectly in the end. The same thing happened when my BFF bought her condo (that I rent a room in). We both fell in love with a super cute place, but we didn’t exactly love the neighborhood or its layout, so we held out for a short sale and it was totally worth it. Looking forward to seeing what you do when you jump the new places’ bones! :)ReplyCancel

  • Karen6.3.13 - 7:52 PM

  • YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! What a relief, right? I know I’m late to the party (dang real life has kept me off the interwebs the last few weeks), but I hope you’re still walking on air, celebrating and making real ‘This is finally happening’ plans for your space. I can’t want to see it and follow the journey as you make it your own. Maybe we can swap renovation sob stories when you get a few months in ;)ReplyCancel
