Canine Fashion (and California Bound!)

As often as time allows, we walk Jack with a group of his four-legged peers on Sunday mornings. We’re part of the dog walking club, SociaBulls, a weekly meet up focused on dog socialization without physical interaction (you can find out more right here). We’ve mentioned our Sunday treks in the past, and since joining the pack last summer, our little man has learned proper dog-to-dog etiquette, patience, leash manners and most importantly, a sense of canine fashion.

You can see here that his wet nosed buddies are quite the trendsetters – with their pink plaid capes, furry hats and wooly scarves – but poor Jack only had one outfit. Always the concerned parents, we knew we had to remedy this situation and spruce up his lacking wardrobe. We wanted Jack to fit in, naturally.

We decided on a Zack & Zooey hoodie, and after a ridiculous amount of measurements (rewarded with chicken liver treats and belly rubs), we went with an XL in black. But since we’d never actually purchased doggie clothing before (his aviator coat was a hand me down), we were off in the sizing and had to wait another (excruciating!) three days for the large. Don’t let his bobble head fool you – he’s a lean machine.

But we weren’t done yet. I also scooped an iron-on Penguin transfer, figuring the extra cool points could only help his lady chances while sporting our favorite team.

After cutting it down to size (we ordered the 5×7), I simply followed the instructions that were emailed to me from the seller. With my parchment paper buffer, I held the steam-free iron down for 45 seconds on each section of the logo using the hottest setting.

But when I lifted the iron off, my penguin had burned! In place of his clean, white chest was a browned gut, and the yellow background was tarnished and speckled. I panicked, called Scott, and I texted him a photo as proof of my lacking transfer skills. As my calmer, level-headed half, he convinced me that it wasn’t so bad. Rather, I had created a vintage hoodie.

Meh, we can call it that. And vintage is much cooler anyway.

Of course we’re deciding on his next color (blue? red?) and other transfer options. Jack’s vote was indifferent, suggesting he’d rather walk in his birthday suit, but we’ve since convinced him that the ladies much prefer a little mystery.

In other news, I’ll be leaving solo this weekend for Los Angeles to spend one whole glorious week with my lady, Kalli! She moved west after college, and as my pre-Scott roommate, I’m truly looking forward to a close quarters reunion. I imagine the days will involve beach frolicking, photo hunting, desert dwelling and girl gabbing. (Lots and lots of that.)

And while doing said frolicking, hunting and gabbing, I have this idea that Scott’ll catch up on God of War (or something), eat pizza every evening and talk man stuff with his dudes. Most importantly, he’ll likely be enjoying a welcome break from studio-ing.

Although I’ll be away, I’ll still be here, sharing those hunted snaps of my trip with Scott (and you!) as often as possible. It’ll be photos mostly, as I’ll be saving the gabbing for my lady.

Any LA natives with must-dos?

Jack looks awesome in his new, vintage hoodie. :)
Have a blast in Cali with Kalli! I don’t have any tips, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy the warmth!ReplyCancel

    OOO! LA! My recommendations:
    – La Estrella. Best burritos ever. Go to the one in Pasadena
    – In n Out burger. duh.
    – Portos bakery in Burbank. Try the potato balls!

If Scott is bored I’m hosting a badass movie night sunday!

    have fun!ReplyCancel

Ohmygoodness, I absolutely LOVE the iron-on-transfer idea! We just ordered 2 of those hoodies for our pup… size large for a 40 pound pit, I hope they fit! I love the idea of getting her a little snazzier while she’s out and about :)ReplyCancel

Tyrell, thanks! Burritos, burgers and a bakery. Got it! I’ll tell Scott about Sunday – his first night of freedom!

QueerBird: The large will definitely fit – it may even be a tad big! Jack is almost 60 lbs, and while the large is snug on him, he was swimming in the XL. I just took a peek at your pittie – good gracious, she is gorgeous!ReplyCancel

  • I love Jack in his bomber jacket! He’s kind of a bad ass. :) And the iron-on decal is such a neat idea! I think the “vintage” look still is pretty cool. Have a great trip in Cali! We’ll miss you this Sunday.ReplyCancel

Try and hit up Abbot Kinney over on the west side. It’s super fun! Have a great time! http://www.abbotkinneyonline.com/ReplyCancel

As an LA dweller (not a native, but I’ve adopted the town for now), I suggest:

-Museum of Jurassic Technology (Culver City)
-Long Beach Antique Market (only once a month, but it just so happens there is one this Sunday)
    -Wurstkurche (downtown LA)
    -The Edison (downtown LA)
-Any number of hikes (Bronson Canyon in Griffith Park is the 1960s Batcave entrance, the Echo Mountain trail in Altadena leads to the foundations of the Mt. Lowe Railway resort built 100+ years ago, or for a smaller hike, the Old Zoo in Griffith Park is neat – you can go in the old animal cages!)ReplyCancel

You’re definitely coming at the right time, the weather has been a bit schizo but now it’s sunny and not too hot. :) Ditto what Mallory said, especially the old abandoned zoo in Griffith Park – then go up to watch the sunset from the Observatory and quote Rebel Without A Cause. Bottega Louie is amazing for lunch or dinner, very NYC-style with a full bakery too. Don’t skimp on the macarons, they’re to die for! If you get there before 11:30 during the week you can easily snag a table. Have fun!!ReplyCancel

I totally would of freaked out about the transfer snafu too! And my husband would of been the one to convince me it was fine (which jack’s hoodie looks great btw!).

P.S. Love your walking group’s costume changes! They are one fine looking bunch :)ReplyCancel

as girlie trips go, few things are as relaxing as a Korean day spa–my preference is Olympic Spa in Koreatown

I love the goddess treatment, but even a day pass with no treatments is lovely…ReplyCancel
