How We Decided On a Black, White + Pink Bathroom

This post is in partnership with Lowe’s.

The plastic is down! If you’ve also lived in your home during the course of any renovation – big or small – you know that feeling of relief, right? For the last two and a half weeks over the course of our small bath remodel, we’ve had a floor-to-ceiling plastic sheet separating our living room from the bathroom. And because we decided to steal space from the workshop to make a larger bathroom and add a transom window(!), our kitchen was also mostly off-limits, since it connected the two spaces.

But as of yesterday? It’s down! The plastic is down! We’re big fans of celebrating every single milestone in a renovation, and this last one is a huge stride toward the finish line.

The small bath has been a pain point for as long as we’ve lived in our home (it’ll be 6 years this June, can you believe it?), and it’s incredibly exciting to know that we’re finally turning it into a space we can be proud of. It’s the last untouched room in our house, and the time has come to create an efficient mini oasis for our guests – and in the future, we imagine this to be Lucy’s dedicated bathroom! She’ll need storage and space, and we’re keeping that in mind with every step of the design, too.

Setting a Budget

Aside from the expense of our contractor and custom glass shower door, our goal was to outfit the room from top to bottom for under $5,000. We knew that this number would be a sweet spot with Lowe’s, where we would have the ability to create a high end, classic look for a DIY price. As we filled our online Lowe’s shopping cart, we were pleasantly surprised to see that we came in under our budget. (The free shipping never hurts!) We were sure to include everything from the tile to the toilet and the vanity to the medicine cabinet – even the grout, exhaust fan, recessed lights, lumber, paint and tubes of caulk. So, yeah, (almost*) everything!

*We’re working with a local stone fabricator to cap our shower curb and niche. Here’s a tip: To keep that cost low, we selected stone from their remnant pile!

Curating a Collection

Since using the Delta Cassidy faucet in the garden apartment bathroom renovation, we made the easy decision to use the same for our small bath. We like that we can curate an entire collection from Lowe’s, rounding out the look with the Cassidy widespread faucet, rain shower head, towel hooks and toilet paper holder. In true Kim + Scott fashion, we chose Polished Chrome for the more permanent fixtures. We like to think of polished chrome as the blue jeans of metal – it’s always in style! To mix things up, we layered in Delta’s Champagne Bronze for the small accessories, and for good measure, we even added a pretty brass light fixture.

Playing off of the curvy Cassidy collection, we landed on this marble topped vanity and paired it with an arched mirror / medicine cabinet. To keep our design cohesive with the rest of our home, we chose a similar hex tile as our master bathroom, but this time, we opted for a simple flower pattern. We paired that with the Bedrosians Cloe tile for our standing shower, which has a high gloss and a handmade feel. The contrast between the shiny shower tile and the matte floor is a small detail that we think will elevate the design overall.

A Black, White + Pink Mood Board

It would physically pain me to not include pink somewhere, somehow. I can’t not add it! Originally, I wanted to use the Cloe pink tiles (because yes, our shower tiles also come in pink!), but Scott feared that we might, maybe one day grow tired of the look. I can’t say that I agree, but he has a point. Instead, we settled on a board and batten wall treatment that we’ll be painting a soft peachy-pink, a fun little punch for the room! We think that small rooms – half baths, recessed nooks or pantries – are a unique opportunity to do something unexpected. We want anyone who walks into this bathroom to smile.

Here’s our plan:

1. rain shower head + arm | 2. handheld shower | 3. diverter | 4. Jaxson sconce | 5. recessed medicine cabinet | 6. towel hook | 7. toilet paper holder | 8. one-piece toilet | 9. marble top vanity | 10. widespread faucet | 11. black hexagon tile | 12. white hexagon tile | 13. Cloe subway tile

We’re hoping to start the board and batten this weekend, but we still need to decide on a pink! (Any suggestions?) Our Little Room that Could has come so far in the last month, and we’re crossing all our fingers that we’ll have a usable, adorable room by June. Now that our contractors are done with their portion of the job – the demolition, plumbing and tile – it’s all us. Diving in in 3… 2… 1…

I have always been wondering how Peignoir from Farrow & Ball will look in a small space. It’s a much more muted pink (less peachy), but could be cute.ReplyCancel

Love your plan! Looks so fun. Lucy’s gonna love it when she’s older too! I just renovated my little bathroom and used a lot of similar finishes! I painted it the palest pink that’s almost like calamine lotion. It’s Benjamin Moore’s Pink Beach and it’s a great, mature pink. https://landoflaurel.com/2019/05/08/one-room-challenge-week-6-final-master-bathroom-reveal/ReplyCancel

When we were living in Logan Square, I painted the inside of my closet pink to make it feel a little more fun and I loved the shade that I picked almost arbitrarily off the swatches in Home Depot—Behr “Sheer Scarf.” It was a really soft neutral blush, almost a stone color but not yellowy at all. I can be a little color-averse so it was just the right amount of pink!ReplyCancel

I just painted my bathroom Tissue Pink by Benjamin Moore. It’s a subtle peachy pink that’s renowned for making skin look pretty. I tried a bunch of the Farrow and Ball samples and was surprisingly unimpressed.ReplyCancel

We painted my daughter’s nursery Sherwin Williams Intimate White and it is the most perfect blush pink.  Love this bathroom and can’t wait to see the finished product!ReplyCancel

I LOVE THIS BATHROOM! It is serving as inspiration for our current master remodel. Two questions: what grout did you use on the shower walls and on the floor? And where did you get the over the mirror light fixture?ReplyCancel

    • Kim5.27.19 - 2:51 PM

Thanks, Gary! We used white unsanded grout for the shower and charcoal sanded grout for the floors (both from Lowe’s). This is the light fixture above the mirror!ReplyCancel
