Birds Fly South(er)

With all of the recent changes around our living room, we found ourselves with a couple of homeless critters. You might remember our trio of birds that formerly held down the space on the bright green wall above the television. With the media wall and our pet portraits now occupying that space, our birds were left with nowhere to roost.

While sitting on the couch a few days ago, I had an idea: simply allow them to fly a few feet south and add a bit of visual interest to our small ceiling drop. Here’s what I mean (to the right of Libby’s back end):

Three carefully calculated (read: eyeballed) nails later and the birds had a new home. Here’s how we’re looking now (and yup, the birds are actually flying south):

We re-used the same 3M mounting strips to keep the flight trajectories headed in the right direction, and as before, these guys were a cinch to put up.

We weren’t sure how the white ceramic would fare against our pale, minty-blue, but we like the simplicity in the combo. While not glaringly obvious, it’s sort of oh hey, look at that. And on a side note, the light fixture in our entryway is not actually slanted so far to the right – lens distortion at it’s best.

So, has anyone else looked “up” to put seemingly unusable space to good use? We’ve had to get a bit creative in this tiny home (as seen here and here), but I’m sure we’re not the only ones!

  • I love your little birds! So cute and the placement is different, but that is what is so fun. :)

We put recessed lighting in our crown moldings to give our bedroom a soft glow. http://ourhumbleabowed.wordpress.com/2011/01/31/the-crowning-jewel/ReplyCancel

Oh, my! LOVE the way you incorporated that lighting. We must try that – perhaps when we actually have a “master” bedroom!ReplyCancel

We are stacked to the ceilings in these parts! Most recently we installed a fan high up, on a door jamb, so as to save the square foot of space it occupied on a shelf.

    Pretty birdies!ReplyCancel

i wonder if they will find a way to fly north for summer and south for winter? that would be a clever set of birds!
i love the placement, by the way.ReplyCancel

    Amanda-

Love the recessed lighting idea! That casts such a nice, warm glow on the room. That’s a project for our future home for sure!

    Aleksandra-

That sounds like a lot of time spent patching nail holes to me!ReplyCancel
