Be Our Guest: Trim Interiors

To wrap up a fun week of guests in our tiny casa, Lauren of Trim Interiors is here to share a top notch space saving solution for the city dweller. As many of us may have seen in the great big blog-o-world, “closet” offices have become a unique staple in teeny homes, and we think Lauren’s answered a small space puzzle worthy for the books. As a trained professional based in the Big Apple, we’re flattered that she could drop in. And this tip’s on the house.

Hey everyone! I’m Lauren from Trim Interiors and I’m really excited to be guest posting here at Yellow Brick Home.

Like Kim and Scott, we’re very well versed on small spaces. And since they just posted their office re-do, I thought I’d continue the theme and share with you the office of our friend, Kiersten.

Kiersten is a grad student and a freelance designer. She lives in a two bedroom apartment in New York with a roommate, so her bedroom doubles as an office. But who doesn’t need a little space from their work, right? So what’s a girl to do when she needs to add a room into a rental? In this case, we found everything we needed at IKEA.

Using the PAX wardrobe system, we created an office with a smaller footprint than most desks, but all the storage of a large closet. The best part? When Kiersten’s workday is done, she can close up shop and put all that work out of sight.

We started with a PAX 2 door wardrobe with high gloss white doors, $310 at IKEA.

Add some KOMPLEMENT drawers for a printer, books, and storage boxes, $40 at IKEA.

Include a KOMPLEMENT shelf for a laptop or monitor, $20 at IKEA.

Pretty boxes and organizers add a personal touch.

A pretty environment always makes “going to work” a little easier (at least on the eyes). So to really make your home office a place you’ll want to spend some time, go one step farther and create a false back with wallpaper or fabric covered cardboard. This will conceal wires and add some color.

Treating yourself to a little nice wallpaper can be a good incentive to “open up shop” every day. Kreme Life, Trove, and FlavorPaper all have gorgeous and unique wallpaper collections. For a less expensive option, find a cool scrapbook paper and tile it on your walls (we like this and this). Or pick up a graphic fabric panel while you’re at IKEA.

As Scott and Kim know, living in a small space is all about adaptability. But with an open mind and some careful planning, you can always find a way to make a space adapt to your needs, instead of the other way around.

Thank you, Lauren!

I love the idea of making a false back to cover wires–it’s a constant battle with us, with a pre-war apartment and a toddler! Good thing I just bought way too much vintage-style poly fabric…ReplyCancel

This is really great. Come to think of it, I never really cared for how my office space looked-like. I guess seeing these pictures made me want to do a major make-over on my office. Gotta buy some necessary tools for the job though. =)ReplyCancel
