Bathroom Redo: Reveal

Last week, we shared our yolk-y mirror redo. A clean, poppy coat of paint and some decorative tacks from the local fabric store punched our originally black, drab mirror up a few notches.

So what else did we do? Our overall goal was to take that sky blue bathroom and make it feel a little more polished. A little less baby-boy’s-bedroom, and a little more connected to the rest of our home. As big fans of color, we’re not afraid to play around with orange bedrooms or green accent walls, but that doesn’t mean we always hit the mark the first time around. After our mirror got a new look, we wanted to stay in the gray family, which was all originally inspired by this sunny LA salon bathroom. By doing so, we hoped to lend some continuity from our already moody gray walls in the hall, and not make the bathroom seem like a complete disconnect.

Already having fallen in love with Martha’s paint array (enough so to settle on Egg Yolk for the mirror facelift), we decided to keep with the Miss Martha theme and choose a polished, grown-up color for the walls, too. The hubs and I instantly agreed on Opal, a silvery almost-gray. A few coats and trimwork later, we were already feeling the adult-in-us come out.

Add it to our clean and simple floor-to-ceiling shower curtain, and we’ve truly grown up. Mom would be proud. Of course we kept costs low by keeping our current rod and rings in place and swiping the curtain and liner off of Amazon.com for a steal. Yes, Mom would be proud.

Having seen the effect of the 96-incher over at Young House Love, we just couldn’t resist. The waffle weave feels oh-so-chic, and the dramatic length tricks the eye into a nice, tall ceiling.

And speaking of ceilings, we painted that too. Yup. While cutting in with my trusty angled brush, Scott pointed out the unwanted scuzzy film that layered our once clean ceiling. After a few years of exhaust dust and shower steam, it was bound to happen. So without further hesitation, we swiped a nice big streak of Opal across the bathroom lid, and that was that. We’re still slack-jawed at the difference. We’ll add that to the checklist of items that take our bathroom from 9′ tall to a seemingly endless oasis. Or something.

Last but not least, you may have noticed that our photo strip frames got a baby makeover as well. What was once black, dull and light-sucking (ouch), is now fresh, clean, and cohesive with the rest of our home. A can of satin-finish spray paint polished ’em right up, and we love how the color (or lack of?) mimics the curtain on the opposite wall.

So there you have it. For the full before and after in all it’s glory, just take a look at where we started. This bathroom has officially seen more makeovers than any other room in our home – and that’s sayin’ something. From day 1 as a dark, mossy green (with no photo proof, lucky for you), to the boy’s-bedroom-blue, I think we’ve finally hit the mark with our refreshing new look. Of course we keep it YBH-style by refusing to settle on anything other than yellow for the mirror. But hey, that’s us.

Alright. Let’s be honest. How many of you have ever had second thoughts on your first (or second or third) color choices? Or maybe you’re now wondering what made you buy that sofa, dining room set, or insert-any-other-unlucky-investment-piece-here? We know we’re not alone, and misery loves company (just a tad dramatic, no?). Let’s hear it.

I always do this with paint! But I think your choices work very well! You always know how to add the right pop of color in a space with wood tones! So jealous!ReplyCancel

I like the gray and yellow combo. Very nice! Yeah, I’m tired of waking up to pea-green colored walls. That is next on our list of paint-overs!ReplyCancel

Kennedy’s room has had 3 different colors of pink on it – all painted by her daddy while the mom-to-be “supervised”. First color was “too light” for mommy’s liking…second color was too “my eyes are burnnning” bright…followed by the third and final color “Cupid’s Arrow” which hit right on the bull’s-eye!ReplyCancel

Hi Kim, glad to know we’re not on our third color all alone! Have you seen Martha Stewart’s line of pinks? They’re either very subtle or very bright – with not much inbetween. There’s one shade in particular that makes me swoon: Sea Salt. Gorgeous.ReplyCancel

Six months after my husband and I got married in 1984 (yes, we’re been married a long time) we purchased our first place – a three bedroom condo and started painting every room. The color we picked for our bedroom was called “corn muffin yellow.” My mother was helping and she had just started painting our room when I heard her call, “Susan, you might want to take a look at this!” The color was awful! Being on a super tight budget, we went ahead and painted the whole room hoping it would dry lighter and prettier (ah, hope springs eternal!). It didn’t and we stood the color for about three months before repainting. Well, that’s the first of many times we have enthusiastically embraced wild paint colors and some have been big hits and some even bigger misses! Often the misses make for the best stories and we still chuckle over that corn muffin yellow bedroom!ReplyCancel

Susan, thank you for sharing! You’re right – our awful choices do lead to some pretty funny stories. It’s funny to hear that you still chuckle over the corn muffin yellow – it must have been somethin’!ReplyCancel
