A Night In

This post is in collaboration with Article.

On a good day, 60-degree weather in the city can feel a good ten degrees warmer when the sun’s hitting you. It’s during times like these that we like to eat lunch on our east-facing back patio, where the cool air is mixed with hot sun. For the better part of the day, this is where the warmth is. In the evenings, we’ll chase that sunshine to our west-facing front porch, and we’ll linger on the swing until the last rays set behind the tall apartment buildings one block over. It’s the magic hour – when the sky is orange and pink and the dropping temps can be fixed with a wool blanket – that’s our very favorite. Arguably, there is no better time to enjoy a front porch.

Recently, we swapped our outdoor rug for one size larger, and we changed up our cushions and pillows. We love a good refresh every few years, and we were craving a more neutral palette. Our large coffee table was nixed in favor of two teak Nimbus side tables from Article, a choice we made for the ease of moving them about, closer or farther away, depending on your need for a foot rest or a place to set a cocktail.

We’ve long admired Article for their sofas and chairs, but not having a need for either, we were pleasantly surprised to see that they offer up a surprising amount of small furniture and accessories! If you’re new to Article, they’re a budget friendly brand because they believe in simplicity and efficiency; their items skip a lot of the steps of a typical retail store, keeping costs low. When our tables arrived, we were super impressed with the quality – so, so nice! The white powder coated legs have the prettiest matte finish (psst, they come in graphite, too!), and they have a hefty weight to them, perfect for our bumbling pups that love to run circles around furniture. The raw teak tabletop will naturally silver with age, something we’re looking forward to.

Our front porch was one of the first things we loved about our house, a rare treat in Chicago. Although we enjoy daydreaming about the day that we’ll finally add a tongue and groove ceiling, bulkier columns and cleaner railings, it’s still one of our favorite spaces to kick back, relax and catch up. On weekends, there are few things that beat an iced coffee on the porch while watching the world go by, as they say. I’ve lost count of how many naps our swing has seen, and how many evenings have ended way too late, with five-too-many friends packed in.

But in the evenings, at the end of a hectic day, watching the sky fade from blue to purple to pink? There’s no better place to be than right here.

Side tables are a great idea for out on the porch! You always seem to have to manoeuvre yourself around bigger ones rather than the other way around. Beautiful photographs xReplyCancel

Right?! We were always moving our large one closer to the swing, or closer to the chairs, so we thought, let’s get two small ones. A table for everyone!ReplyCancel

This is so cozy! What a great space for winding down in the evening. I know Article for their sofas and chairs, like you said, so it’s fun to see other stuff they offer. The tables are beautiful!ReplyCancel

Oh CC, you’re such a heartbreaker!

This porch is the bee’s knees and that dappling of magic hour light on the swing is so dreamy!ReplyCancel

This is bursting with inspiration for our own front porch, which only collects little tiny bikes and packages. I want to sit out there! We’re doing it.ReplyCancel

Any chance you can share about the new swing cushions? We built one just the same and the hubby keeps asking for more comfort :)ReplyCancel

We purchased 18″ deep Sunbrella cushions from Home Decorators collection, but it looks like they just merged site with Home Depot, so I’m having a tough time finding them! These are similar (although not as in wide of a range of colors). Our white pillows are from Crate & Barrel (also Sunbrella), and the pink ones are IKEA!ReplyCancel

This makes me miss having a porch so badly! Love what you guys did with the space… and those pups are too sweet. xoReplyCancel
