A Master Bath Refresh (+ a Giveaway!)

How we organize our master bath | via Yellow Brick Home

violet pajama set | down booties | bath rug

This post is sponsored by The Company Store.

It’s been two-and-a-half years since we completed the total transformation of our master bath, and we’re still saying to each other, remember when there was duct tape on the floorIt’s hard to believe how far we’ve come when we stop to think about it (again, I say, duct tape!), but we think it’s so important to celebrate these victories. After all, we’ve worked countless nights and weekends to get here! (Although, we may have blacked out the memory of laying all the tile.) Over the course of that renovation, we reconfigured the plumbing, pushed back a wall and maximized storage with every spare inch we had. To that point, it was one of the largest start-to-finish room overhauls we had completed, and it remains one of our favorites to this day. We wouldn’t change a thing.

Speaking of, we truly hadn’t changed a thing. All the permanent fixtures remain the same, sure, but we had yet to treat ourselves to fresh bath towels, a new candle or a plush bathmat. And although we consider ourselves pretty tidy, the vanity drawers were starting to become cluttered, and our tall, skinny storage was no longer being used to its fullest potential.

How we organize our master bath | via Yellow Brick Home

We recently teamed up with The Company Store to change that! Have you shopped with The Company Store? They’re one of our go-to shops for bedding and bath basics, but they also have a great selection of home decor (including that moss green velvet pillow in Tree House’s guest room that we heart so much!). Years of use and countless washings had our previous white towels feeling threadbare and looking dull, and we were overdue to upgrade them. Psst: We’re sharing the love at the bottom of this post!

No one should be surprised that we chose white again, but there’s something about white towels that feels so fresh, clean and luxurious, don’t you think? This time around, we picked two patterns – one for us, one for Lucy. For us, we landed on these quick dry towels, and for Lucy, we opted for these dots (so cute!). The quick dry towels are a light(er)weight material, which surprised us initially, but having used them for the last month, we’ve grown to love them! (They are the best for wrapping up wet hair.) Our sweet Lucy recently outgrew her newborn hooded towels, and we’ve since switched over to the dots exclusively. We’re biased, of course, but there is nothing more adorable than a giggly Luce swaddled up in her towel!

While we were upgrading, we took it as an opportunity to re-organize the bath and reassess the systems we had in place. Up until now, we had been stashing our extra towels in our laundry cabinets (around the corner and through our bedroom), but that was less than ideal, and we knew there had to be a way to fit them into our long and skinny storage bath closet:

How we organize our master bath | via Yellow Brick Home

We started by emptying every last thing out of the closet, and we tossed anything that was expired. We corralled medicine, first aid items, extra soap and cleaning supplies, and we divided them up between clear storage bins (eliminating any guesswork when you need to grab something quickly). If we had duplicates of anything – say, shampoo or body wash – we set those to the side to bring to Tree House. We don’t tend to overbuy products, but we were amazed at how much had gathered towards the back of that cabinet! Once everything was cleared out, we found ourselves with two empty shelves. Two. Two! The shelves in our cabinet are adjustable, so we played around with the heights until we were able to fit all the bins plus our spare rolled up towels. Much better!

But why stop there? (Guys, organizing is truly, honestly my very favorite thing.) We also emptied out our vanity drawers and by the time we were done sorting, we gained an empty drawer!

We then promptly filled it up with a stack of these bamboo washcloths and thick dot hand towels:

The Company Store has an assortment of extra large bath rugs, and we chose this pretty Rose Quartz rug, straying from our usual all-white. At 40″ wide, it’s substantial enough to fill the space underneath our double vanity, and Libby has been claiming it as her own ever since!

And the perfect cap to our master bath refresh? A fall scented candle.

Hmm if you like organizing I’d be happy to have you over to my house…lol.

Bathroom looks great, I like the polka dot towel best out of the new additions. The mirror with the duck feet and the tooth canister are amazing, though- as are those adorable puppydog eyes. You make having a kid + a cat + 2 doggos look not-crowded.ReplyCancel

Yes! I was just looking at my towels and told my hubby that that’s what I wanted for christamas – fresh new towel #youknowyoureoldwhen I’m interested in trying the quick dry towels you mentioned!ReplyCancel

  • Michelle V Arroyo10.24.18 - 8:27 AM

New towels are always such a nice “splurge.” And even better is that I donate my old towels to the local animal shelters – they’re always asking for linens and towels! It’s a win-win. =)ReplyCancel

  • Molly10.24.18 - 8:29 AM

I LOVE The Company Store! We get all our bedding from there- and it’s top notch!ReplyCancel

  • Barbara Zunder10.24.18 - 8:29 AM

I am so excited at the thought of plush towels for my little boys’ bathroom, which also happens to be the guest bathroom when people come over. The look of plush towels really elevates the experience… and hopefully would mean that they would pick them up off of the floor!ReplyCancel

  • Kelsey G10.24.18 - 8:35 AM

I could really use a rug at the back doors instead of the bath towel I’m currently using lol.ReplyCancel

  • Lauren10.24.18 - 8:38 AM

It’s amazing how regularly used linens get so abused over time. It’s not until you replace them that you realize how bad they had gotten! Our family is definitely in need of upgraded sheets and towels. The Company Store towels you mention look like they would totally fit the bill!ReplyCancel

  • Jessica F10.24.18 - 8:41 AM

I would definitely buy some throw pillows!ReplyCancel

  • Rylie10.24.18 - 8:41 AM

OMG those towels! ? And Libs ♥️ReplyCancel

  • Ashlyn10.24.18 - 8:43 AM

We haven’t bought new towels since we got married 10 years ago, so towels definitely top my list!ReplyCancel

  • Erin Matheny10.24.18 - 8:44 AM

Your moss green pillows have my heart. Also, as an aside, after you first posted about the bathroom, I had to have a Ryan Duggan from the “Shitting Dog” series. It has moved around the house and (finally) found the perfect spot. . .in our bathroom, of course.ReplyCancel

    • Kim10.24.18 - 11:32 AM

Haha, there’s no better place! Which one did you get?ReplyCancel

      • Erin10.29.18 - 10:10 AM

It was the very last “Shriners on Parade.” I grew up in a small northern IL town where the taverns are just as ubiquitous as traffic lights, and the image is straight from my 80’s childhood memories. The subtlety of the dog makes the nostalgia even better :)ReplyCancel

  • Melissa10.24.18 - 8:51 AM

The Company Store is awesome- even after many years our down comforter from them is in great shape!ReplyCancel

  • Amy cheng10.24.18 - 8:56 AM

Great post. The towels look good. I love the dot ones you picked.
If I had to choose something at the company store, it would either be New towels or a new comforter for our master bedroom. Love this one http://www.thecompanystore.com/cstudiohome/comforters/woodcut-medallion-comforter-set/40092c-ps-c18.html#sz=12&start=37ReplyCancel

  • Steph VW10.24.18 - 9:32 AM

Ok, you’re inspiring me to get moving on my bathroom refresh! Those towels look so fluffy and nice! One thing caught my eye, though, as I work in the pharmacy industry in Canada: I would suggest that you store your medications outside of the bathroom. The heat and humidity in a bathroom is detrimental to your meds – even the liquids.ReplyCancel

This makes me excited to tackle our bathroom overhaul this winter (and we may try to steal your tiny but tall cabinet storage idea if we can make it fit)! We’ve been letting things go in the organizational department knowing a full overhaul is coming and I can’t wait to tidy up! And those towels! Our current towels are SEVEN years old and in desperate need of replacement and those Company Store beauties would versatility fit the bill!ReplyCancel

We need new bedding. With the comforter it’s too hot, without it’s too cold. This would be so helpful!ReplyCancel

I figure my towels are close to 20 years old (where does the time go?) and are starting to get holes. I’d love to get another set of towels that last for another 20 years,ReplyCancel

I love how industrious you are in your design and build goals ( especially considering you have a baby). Your mix of traditional and modern are goals ( I’m attempting a complete redesign of my 1920’s courtyard building condo in Riverside). The design process has been great fun, much of that is in the puzzling all my wish list into 650 square feet while maintaining both small bedrooms. I’m heartened to have found fellow Chicagoland design freaks adept at mixing styles into a coherent whole. Thanks for your fine efforts in documenting your design accomplishments on utube and instagram. (I just began reading your blog today). and also thanks for turning me onto Daniel Kanter—he’s a trip! Now on to the Company Store to score a pair of warm house slippers for winter.ReplyCancel

I still love this bathroom – it’s the perfect mix of staying true to the home’s roots and new and fresh! Just curious, are you guys making any plans to update the bathroom on the first floor? Our master bath is the same ridiculously tiny size, and I can’t wait to see how you guys make it work!ReplyCancel

    • Kim10.29.18 - 11:33 AM

We can’t decide if we want to do that bathroom or the Tree House bathroom first! I think we’re paralyzed in fear between starting either one, haha.ReplyCancel

I love how it turned out! Gotta make some refresh for my house very soon!ReplyCancel

  • Nate Anderson8.2.19 - 11:34 PM

I’d say towels need a bar to hang on and not a hook. With a bar they can be spread out and dry faster, with a hook they stay a bit wadded up and retain moisture longer.
    That’s my personal finding. ReplyCancel
