A Guide to Creating Capsule Bedding

Let’s create a capsule wardrobe for the bedroom! From bedding basics to how we mix, match and layer, we’ve partnered with The Company Store to share how to build an intentional, solid foundation for the coziest sleep.

There was a time in my life when I only owned white bedding. To me, all white bedding is reminiscent of a nice hotel – cool, crisp sheets, a heavy comforter and neat, squared corners. And while modern-day-Kim still likes that look, I’ve found myself gravitating more towards a mix of pewter, cream, taupe, and subtle patterns. As Scott likes to say, our new bedroom look feels extra smunchy. (That’s code for heaven on Earth!)

I’ve always stood by the truth that changing out your bedding can not only drastically change the overall look of your bedroom, but it’s a mood booster, too! You sleep better and wake up happier, and you do so with a can-do attitude. Aah, that fresh from the dryer, clean sheet feeling, right? So we teamed up with The Company Store to create a capsule wardrobe for our bedroom. I’ll be sharing how we built an intentional, solid foundation for the coziest sleep, from bedding basics to patterns and colors that we can mix, match and layer!

Right now, The Company Store is hosting their Semi-Annual Sale, with up to 25% Off Best Sellers! Use code T21BEST at checkout through 1/31, and get free ground shipping on orders of $50+.

Our Capsule Bedding Picks

The Bedding Basics

Choosing a comforter or duvet insert can seem overwhelming, so it’s important to know what makes you feel happiest. For us, we prefer king-sized pillows and a down-alternative king duvet insert with mid-range warmth. We don’t change out our duvet insert seasonally, but with cold Chicago winters and hot summers, we do change up the way make our bed so that we’re comfortable year round. More on that in a minute!

The Company Store has this detailed guide on choosing the right bedding basics for you, and you can shop their (massive!) selection right here. We opted for LoftAIRE Down Alternative pillows in both soft and medium, as well as the LaCrosse™ Dual LoftAIRE Down Alternative Duvet Insert, because – get this! – it’s structured so that one half of the insert is lightweight (cooler), whereas the other half is mid-weight (more warm). Because Scott sleeps cool and I’m always too warm, this was the perfect solution for us. Mind. Blown.

Duvet Covers, Sheets and Coverlets

With our bedding basics selected, the next step was finding a combination of duvet covers, sheets and coverlets that could be easily mixed, matched and layered. We opted for duvet covers and sheets in Legends Hotel™ Supima® Cotton Sateen (available in SO many colors!), because they’re virtually wrinkle free with the silkiest hand-feel. Truly, we’ve found our match in cotton sateen! Here’s where we landed:

Building Upon the Base Layers | Cool Weather

Remember when I mentioned that we consistently use the save duvet insert year-round, but we make our bed differently, depending on the weather? In cool/cold weather, we simply lay the coverlet at the foot of our bed, so that we can easily pull it up in the evening for extra warmth, like this:

We started with the sheets in Gray Smoke, added in our Ivory shams and duvet cover, and the coverlet gives us the extra weight we crave on the coldest nights. My favorite part about the natural/striped coverlet we chose is how large it is! There’s more than enough give in the dimensions, so that neither one of us is ever left fighting for the blanket.

Building Upon the Base Layers | Warm Weather

As we head into spring and summer, we’ll use the coverlet as our main blanket! Using the same Gray Smoke sheets and Ivory shams, we made the bed so that the coverlet is on top of our flat sheet. Then, we’ll fold the duvet accordian-style at the foot of the bed – just in case we get chilly! This time, we swapped in the Cafe duvet cover, which is the prettiest coffee-with-cream color. I’m so happy we’ll be adding this color into our rotation!

Creating Your Capsule Bedding

My only rule I’ll stress to you in creating your capsule bedding is this: Have fun! It should come as no surprise that we gravitated towards neutrals for all of our layers, but The Company Store is stocked with endless colors and patterns. If you love bright colors, choose the brightest colors your heart desires, knowing you’ll have the pleasure of mixing and matching them all year long. I was so close to buying this floral quilt, but I chickened out! Can someone please make their bed with this and send us a photo? Maybe I’ll add it to my capsule list for the spring. Psst: I also love, love, love this comforter + sham set.

Because we’re in the thick of winter, we ultimately made our bed with the Gray Smoke sheets, Cafe duvet, and the striped coverlet folded at the foot of the bed. The cotton sateen and heavy coverlet are a literal dream, I can’t recommend them highly enough!

All of our bedding is mix and match, but I finally have a similar setup. Even though where we live doesn’t get super cold, our house is over 100 years old and on pier and beam, so inside can sometimes be colder than out! I went bold and have the Schoolhouse Blooming Field Duvet cover but a white, textured coverlet. We do the same switcheroo for different seasons, and it works perfectly! In other news, I’ve long loved your bed – and I think I FINALLY found a very similar one. I’m going to look at it later today. ReplyCancel

Aah, that’s so exciting! I’d love to see how it turns out if you end up getting it! Round headboards are difficult to find.ReplyCancel

My favorite bedding is one comforter for me, and a separate one for my husband. They are both in the same color so they look continuous when on the bed, but we each get our own separate weight and never have to fight over it. It might be the best solution ever. Also, my mom just swapped out her round headboard for a metal one, and I almost cried! I hope to swipe it from her and use it in my own home.ReplyCancel

Oooh, you gotta take that headboard! And so smart with the two comforters, haha. ReplyCancel

Sateen sheets are my sweet spot as well.  And I just have to say that I LOVE that your capsule bedding is in shades of Catfish!  Kitty inspired, Kitty approved.  :DReplyCancel

This is a little off topic, but I’m interested in your thoughts. Do you think your Big Blanket would work on a bed? Living in Las Vegas, we only want one thin-ish blanket for the summer, but need something large. Thank you!ReplyCancel

    • Kim1.30.21 - 8:27 AM

I absolutely think it would. It’s a 10’ square, so could be folded down at the foot of the bed nicely, too.ReplyCancel

Where are your curtains from? Also, I have thought about painting our room half dark color/half white, like yours, but I am concerned I will not get the line straight enough with tape alone. Do you have tips?ReplyCancel
