This post is sponsored by 3M. You CAN hang heavy things, and we’re showing you how. Hang up to 45 pounds by yourself, easily!
We’re at the point in the Two Flat renovation where we can start whipping out room reveals super casually. Like, oh, hey, remember this bathroom? Boom. Somehow, the Unit 2 bathroom yet to make a prominent blog appearance, but the day has come! We shared the mood board for this space months ago, and seeing the space now, we stuck to it. She’s come a long way, don’t you think?

The Missing Link
Isn’t it strange how a space can come so far, and yet, until you begin hanging hooks and artwork, it can still feel incomplete? Such was the case in Unit 2’s bathroom. With every new layer that was added – the flooring, the marble tile, the vanity (so much warmth!) – we oohed and aahed. We would say, We’re so close! And yet, it wasn’t until we hung the mirror on the wall that we agreed, She’s complete.
Let’s take a step back, because I want to share with you how we hung the mirror on the wall. It changed the way we viewed the task of Hanging Heavy Things – not to mention, the no-fun task of Hanging Heavy Things on two D-rings! In fact, this clever no-tools required hanging solution is so simple to use, you can Hang Heavy Things all by yourself. Here’s the secret:
Hang Heavy Things By Yourself
When we learned about the 3M™ CLAW Drywall Picture Hanger and Spot Marker, we wondered if it was too good to be true. (Spoiler: It really is that good!) With the CLAW Drywall Picture Hanger, you can hang artwork up to 45 pounds without the help of anyone else, and all you’ll need is your thumbs. Included with our kit is a Spot Marker, and we’re still singing its praises days later.
The mirror we purchased is 20 pounds and has 2 D-rings, which makes for secure hanging, tired arms, and tricky math, right? The 3M™ CLAW Drywall Picture Hanger and Spot Marker changed the game. There’s no need to find a stud, and unlike a an anchor or toggle bolt, it won’t leave big holes in your drywall. We followed the easy-to-follow instructions that came in the package, but here’s how it breaks down:
- We made a small dot on the back of the mirror where a nail would typically go.
- We took our Spot Marker and removed the liner from the gray side, exposing the adhesive.
- With the adhesive side down, we laid the Spot Marker on the mirror so that the top pointed towards our dot. We repeated these steps on both D-rings.
Next, we removed the adhesive from the exposed side of our Spot Markers, and Scott held the mirror in place above the vanity. Because we had two D-rings, we used a small level to ensure that we were nice and straight, and then he gently pressed the mirror onto the wall. When he pulled the mirror away, the Spot Markers stayed on the wall! Using a pencil, we made a small dot in the notch of the Spot Marker, and then we removed them from the wall completely.
Tip: The type of frame hardware you’re using (i.e., sawtooth, D-ring, etc) will determine how to use the Spot Marker, but not to worry! You can view the step-by-step instructions on your package insert.
No Tools Necessary
Here’s where the 3M™ CLAW Drywall Picture Hanger and Spot Marker comes in! As I mentioned before, you don’t even need to search for a stud, because the trusted strength of the 3M™ CLAW Drywall Picture Hanger and Spot Marker can hold up to 45-lbs when pushed directly into drywall. We opted to use the 45-lb strength, but it’s available in 15-lb and 25-lb options as well.
For each dot that we made on the wall, we aligned the bottom notch of our 3M™ CLAW Drywall Picture Hanger and Spot Marker with the pencil mark. With the bottom pushed against the wall and Scott’s thumbs on the upper corners, he pushed in the hanger swiftly and firmly.
And… that’s it! He did the same on both sides and hung our 20-lb mirror while I watched (and documented, ha!). Not once did we need to take out a tape measure, stud finder or drill.
Perhaps our favorite part of hanging this mirror – and why it felt so momentous for this bathroom makeover – is that you can see the brick chimney in its reflection! It adds a layer of depth that we weren’t expecting, which was the happiest surprise.
You can purchase the 3M™ CLAW Drywall Picture Hanger and Spot Marker on Amazon in 15, 25 or 45 pound options. Happy picture hanging!
