A Bedroom Progress Report

bedroom-01

For the last week, our life has mostly revolved around one thing: Baseboards. You know I love them so! (HA.) Now that the bedroom is almost checked off the trim-list, there are just 3 rooms left in the whole house that are still in need, but who’s counting? (Ha-HA!) It’s funny the things you learn about yourself as you work on a fixer upper; who wants to demolish the entire first floor ceiling? We do! Who wants to rip up carpet and lay down floors and paint the deck? Us! Who wants to pull up existing baseboards and install new? Um.

For a task that we find the least enjoyable, it really does make all the difference in the world. (We still laugh about the time we were thisclose to finishing the entryway, but we had yet to install baseboards. A friend came over and asked, wait, have you started renovating the entryway yet? Case in point: Baseboards are a game changer.) But! In between trim-cutting and quarter-round-ing, we’ve been preparing the bedroom for its super-soon, extra dark color. Up until a few days ago, the room was patchy sheens of matte and satin from varying brands of primer. And that lighting situation? We needed to get on that:

Back when our contractors installed the new windows and built out the drywall for our closet, we also had them relocate our ceiling junction box so that it was centered within the room. We hadn’t yet decided on a light fixture, so for the last couple of months, we’ve been bare-bulb-ing it. Knowing that we’d need to paint the ceiling before we painted our walls, the time had come to do something about it, and while we were at it, we decided to add some interest with a simple ceiling medallion.

To be honest, we picked it up on a whim, thinking it might be fun to try. Before cracking the ceiling paint, we adhered the medallion with construction adhesive and quickly re-installed the current light to hold it in place for a few hours.

I was a bit hesitant about our choice, and I asked Scott if we should backtrack immediately – there’s still time!, I said. Instead, we pushed forward, I caulked the seam where it meets the drywall, and then it was time to paint.

We used Behr’s Ultra Pure White paint in a matte finish for the ceiling, painting two coats onto the medallion as well. We were happy (and a bit relieved) to notice that we liked the look! Our light fixture is the Eastmoreland pendant from Rejuvenation with an 18″ drop and a 14″ schoolhouse shade – a classic combination.

Above, you might notice that the ceiling paint drops down onto the wall about 2 feet. See it?

After expressing our concerns for pairing dark paint with less-than-stellar ceilings (they slope about 1″+ from one side of the room to the other), you all came up with the best suggestions for remedying the problem! (See the comments in this post.) We weighed the pros and cons of bringing the wall color into the ceiling by 4-6″ versus creating a straight line about 12″+ down from the ceiling. In the end – and after being inspired by this bedroom and this living room! – we decided to paint 3/4+ up the wall. Knowing myself all too well, a crooked paint line along the ceiling would only increase the chances of restless nights for all of eternity; the issue, as you can see, quickly escalated into a health concern, very much.

Painting will commence this weekend!

This is the paint job I’ve been dreaming of doing in our living room! One thing I’m worried about is how to get a super straight line. If you discover any tips or tricks from keeping the line from waving please share when you talk about the process. Thanks a million!ReplyCancel

We will! We’ve got our tape ready and picked up a laser level this week. Fingers crossed for a straight line!ReplyCancel

Read about painting the wall 3/4+ up on Bright Bazaar awhile back, and it’s a GENIUS idea! Definitely going to keep that in mind for my attic space.ReplyCancel

I just saw that segment on good morning America (I think?) not too long ago as well! The timing was perfect, as we were debating it over here.ReplyCancel

I second Gabrielle. Dream paint job! Can’t wait to see. You all have made so much progress. And I agree… trim is NOT FUN!ReplyCancel

Your timing is perfect, because I too want to go dark on the bedroom walls :-) I’m excited to see how this comes together!

Quick question: I was thinking to paint the same dark color on my wardrobe doors as well, sort of like this:

How would you treat the ceiling paint drop? Do you think it would look ankward if there’s a tall wardrobe that covers a big portion of the drop on one wall? Hope my English makes sense to you :-)

    all the bestReplyCancel

    • Kim3.10.16 - 1:10 PM

Antonella, I hope I’m understanding your questions, but I don’t think it would look awkward at all! Once we’re done, the ceiling drop will cut into our closet doors and the large window. I think we’ll be painting the walls dark ABOVE the laundry room door and entry door to the room, because they’re only 80″ high. Our closet and windows are much taller though – I’d say close to 95″! If you look at this inspiration photo, you’ll see that the ceiling drop cuts into the window and archway, and it still looks pretty, we think: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/AZ-GgP4eJJdNqPLCKi_cGtriboDzzk5oNVQrPa_yr2Yl_Lf-NlTir7s/ReplyCancel

The dark wall brought down like that will look awesome!
The scribbles on the ceiling medallion made me chuckle because I did the same in our bedroom and it is visible through the medallion still!!! Ooooops ;)ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.10.16 - 4:36 PM

I’ve learned to not do that with paint on the walls anymore – you can ALWAYS still see it. Ha!ReplyCancel

  • Tori3.11.16 - 7:49 AM

What a great solution! I can’t wait to see how the painting turns out!ReplyCancel

While I’m as anxious as the next person to see this paint job, what I REALLY think needs to commence this weekend is copious amounts of drinking at your favorite St. Patty’s Day party. ;)ReplyCancel

This is true! We’ll knock this out, and we’ll be ready for our Guinness in the afternoon!ReplyCancel

Yay! We’ll have one (or several) at the ready! :)ReplyCancel

That light fixture was a great choice! I can’t wait to see what it looks like once you get it all painted :)ReplyCancel

  • Dani @ Danielle and Co.3.14.16 - 3:01 PM

How does that little ceiling medallion add so much to the room? It’s crazy how the little details add a whole layer of sophistication to a room… We haven’t replaced most of our light fixtures yet, but after seeing this I’m feeling pretty solid on medallions!ReplyCancel

  • Laura3.14.16 - 10:03 PM

Would you mind sharing where you got the greenish pillow on the bed?? I love what you have done with the space!ReplyCancel

  • Molly3.18.16 - 4:43 PM

    Love those sconcesReplyCancel

  • Sarah B3.18.21 - 2:48 PM

Do you normally stick with a classic white for ceilings? Just bought a house and we have to paint the ceiling (the previous owners used 2 shades of white to patch and it is very obvious). We picked up some white paint samples, but after testing them I’m wondering if we just go with a classic white? THANKS!ReplyCancel

    • Kim3.18.21 - 5:35 PM

I recommend a bright white, untinted from the store, as opposed to ceiling white.ReplyCancel
