30 Tabletop Items for Kids (That You’ll Like, Too)

We’ve worked hard to create a home that we love, both in the way it functions and the way it makes us feel. Since Lucy, you’ve seen as we’ve turned some rooms upside down, in search of something even cozier, less fussy, warmer. We never want anything in our home to be too precious, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fallen down the internet rabbit hole, hunting for that durable fabric, the just-right wool rug or the highest rated sound machine. (It’s this one, and there is no other, really.) Anything we bring into our home, if we can help it, has to make us happy. And this applies to how Lucy feels, too!

In her early stages of eating solids, I remember being determined to find baby bowls and sippy cups that were as good to look at as they are functional – and for a decent price. Toddler tabletop items like these are, luckily, becoming increasingly easier to find. But if I had a hard time seeking out these pieces, surely you may have experienced it as well?

Just as we love the dishes we serve dinner on, we want to feel the same way when we pull a bowl or a plate or a snack cup out of the cupboard for Lucy. We want the chair she sits in to eat those meals to be comfortable and safe, but we also want it to look nice, because it’s going to be out in the open all the time.

Throughout our searches, we’ve found the tabletop items that works best for Lucy, and my goodness, we took some testing to get here. We would wholeheartedly recommend every one of the items below, so much so, that we included many of them in the round-ups within this post!

Tip: These teething spoons really helped Lucy get up and running with utensils when she started solids. We transitioned to the toddler set when she turned 1, which we still use. And if all her toddler utensils need washed, we give her a small salad fork, and she rocks it!

If you’re also in this stage of life, we’ve mapped out attractive solutions for eating, drinking and sitting – all in a range of budgets, colors (muted ones, at that!) and styles. We receive countless requests for baby items that look as good as they are practical, and we hope this helps! If there are items you’ve loved or are loving now, please let us know in the comments!

Wonderful! We have the same high chair and love it. I’ve been hunting for bowls that suction to the top better because apparently our daughter is a voracious eater who is determined to get the bowl to her mouth. Ha!ReplyCancel

We’ve had great luck with our OXO bowls and EZ PZ plates! As long as the surface is smooth, those both work REALLY well in our experience.ReplyCancel

Kim, THANK YOU! I have 5 month old twins and am deep in the high chair/feeding tools search! I have been really eyeing the Tripp Trapp because I love the idea of also letting them pull up to the table instead of using a tray but x2 that price is steep! But thank you for helping me find some of our must pieces as we start solids soon!ReplyCancel

If it’s helpful, we have NO regrets about the high chair that we use for Lucy. We used it with the tray and the plastic tray topper when she was younger (and could then rinse the tray when she was done – so easy!), but now we have the tray removed, buckler her in, and pull her up to the table to eat with us. :) ReplyCancel

We bought the Trip Trapp and have been sorely disappointed with its function. My son needs a high back and even with the infant attachment, he doesn’t get that. We’ve had to go to a Fisher Price option that is not attractive. I wish we’d gone with the OXO to begin with.ReplyCancel

I bought the Tripp Trapp for my first child, and used it for my second and LOVED it.  Then I sold it because we were done having kids.  HA!  Then number three came along, and I bought the cheap IKEA white high chair.  That chair was AMAZING, and cheap.  It could be easily hosed off.  It was not too precious.  I would highly, highly recommend the IKEA high chair.  ReplyCancel

I bought a used Tripp Trapp off Craigslist and we love it, but there are a lot of similar ones out there now too. Ours came from a family that used it for like 8 years before selling!ReplyCancel

Thank you so much for this post! I’m currently pregnant with my first and have been overwhelmed with researching and this was just what I needed. I’d love to see more posts like this!ReplyCancel

Hi guys! Love and use many of these for our 17 mo. old as well! We’ve been trying out the small plates and toddler cup from East Fork Pottery and have had pretty good success! We were worried that because they’re ceramic they’d go flying and break but I think he sees us using similar plates and cups and follows suit! ReplyCancel

I love that mentality. There’s definitely something to it!ReplyCancel

We also used more ceramic plates and glass cups with my daughter and found that the heavier weight to them also discouraged tipping and spilling.  (Our old-fashioned glasses have a thick bottom, so they are very nice and stable.)  I can’t speak to the random flinging–that was just never our kid’s style–but not having to clean up the third spilled milk cup at dinner…so nice!  ReplyCancel

Kim, Any great tips for bottle, plate, baby utensil storage? ReplyCancel

We cleared out a ‘Lucy drawer’ during the nesting phase, and we’ve stuck to it. So the cabinet you see in the photo above has 2 shelves for Lucy’s plates, and we had an entire drawer in our island that we used for bottles and my pump. I’d highly recommend clearing out a space just for their stuff so you always know where to find things!ReplyCancel

As an add-on point to this: If you make it a low drawer, we use a bottom drawer, then your toddler can always go help themselves. I can start prepping dinner and ask my kid (she’s 2.5) to get her plate/bowl/cup and utensils and she pulls open her drawer and gets her stuff! So so handy. Or after stuff is rinsed and dried I’ll have her help me by asking her to put her stuff away in her drawer. I think it helps them foster independence too that they can do this stuff on their own and it makes them feel grown up and a helper. ReplyCancel

We love the Oxo Sprout. Once the younger kiddo came along, we transitioned older kiddo to an Ikea Junior Chair, which is fantastic. We have a wood one, and just bought a plastic one to keep out on the deck for al fresco dining. Makes mealtimes so much easier.ReplyCancel

We have the Stokke Steps chair and really like it. We got it when our oldest was about 2 and she’s 4 now and still uses it. It’s great when they don’t really need a high chair anymore but still need the height…..they can get in it themselves which I like, unlike a highchair and, most importantly, it looks great!! ReplyCancel
